Oswaldtwistle anyone. George Orwell. Me Go on Billy .Im poor im local Apart from me mum and dad we are poor weve been here since 1215 .Jerusalem all we know is War Coal mine .Cotton Mill or dole, Star Trek Where r u Im 53
@suprememasterj2 Yeah, yeah yeah. Done the British thing. It did sod all for the Scots. Bit sick of waiting for the working class in England to get off their arses. Plenty of fine sounding resolutions in conference, fuck all results. Thanks all the same but we'll do it our way and hopefully inspire you. If you have an ounce of sense you will be ready to exploit the situation directly after we leave. Its going to be a major wakeup call for a lot of entrenched attitudes in England.
"I'm not against revolution: I just think the revolution should keep an eye on its self appointed "leaders" and dispose of them when necessary"- George Orwell- Preface to the 2nd American edition of Animal Farm
It comes down that scottish capitalists are just as bad as the british ones, so they should all be fought by the people who they all hold in contempt, their workers.
+Eneachril Beneathar Yes and no. The tune was adopted as the music to the red flag, and it usually sung to that tune. Oh Tannenbaum is still sung to the same tune. It all depends on the words being sung
This is the original tune for it - "The White Cockade" to which the words of the song were set by Jim Connell who wrote them. Connell disapproved of setting it to "O Tannenbaum" saying it was inherently conservative and dirge- like rather than energetic and inspiring like "The White Cockade". This song has the more commonly known "O Tannenbaum" intro before going into the upbeat original
@apollobouncer We should stop fighting to divide ourselves and bring about a new BRITISH REPUBLIC. With even representation of all the nations within it, a new age of cooperation without our squabbling and in fighting. Westminster, Holyrood, all the politicians should dismount from their high horses and join the PEOPLE whose lives they dictate. We are all HUMAN. Race/nationality/religion is all meaningless unless we seek to be better than others, which is a lie. Everyone is equal.
This song is about solidarity of the proliteriate, something that has faded from the 1950s onwards I love this song but I am saddened as the words are hollow in this day and age.
And Dick Gaughan is, as ever, brilliant! He has always kept the true socialist tradition going in his songs - from before Billy started out to the present day. But in doing that he is much more a part of the Scottish culture of solidarity, social justice and equality than the English tradition, of course (sadly).

:) I'm glad I can listen to this at a time when the SNP threaten to rip the union apart and impose upon the people of Scotland a quasi socialist government intent on snatching land from English crofters and building high rise flats in the central region.
@apollobouncer if you want indipendance so much well goodbye. even a large section of scottish nationals say scotland would die on it's arse. but goodbye
DimetriKhan Well yes, in the Pirate Republic true freedom would have been achieved, but since we value "civilization" we can never have it. I'm not sure if you've heard of this little nation but it went by the name of the USSR. Worth looking up actually.
DimetriKhan But became Communism and failed! It looks good on paper but is doomed to always fail. Russia, North Korea, China, Cuba, Yugoslavia, and others all changed or failed; either dying with the Communist flag or turning their backs to it forever. That is the nature of Communism. As said by Ronald Reagan, “I believe that communism is another sad, bizarre chapter in human history whose last pages even now are being written. I believe this because the source of our strength in the quest for human freedom is not material, but spiritual. And because it knows no limitation, it must terrify and ultimately triumph over those who would enslave their fellow men.” But do not feel bad, nearly ALL forms of government are failures to varying degrees. Communism, Socialism, Fascism, Democracy, Capitalist government, Monarchy, etc. As for me, I'll take a tribal council, a Pirate Republic, or be ruled by a Jarl and/or a King. Since both of us will never get what we want (then again I have sworn an oath to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II), why don't we just keep our fantasies to ourselves and call it a day eh?
DimetriKhan Wow...you're even more pathetic than I thought. I am Italian, do not talk to me about Fascism you fuckin' pig. So it is now time that we must part ways. And to do so, I will share with you a verse of a song that is very close to my soul. Now one of the versions of it is technically more accurate, but since it is the month of Remembrance, I will use the more famous version. "O'er the hills and o'er the main Through Flanders, Portugal and Spain. King George commands and we obey Over the hills and far away."
No they really weren't. They used the name as a bit of a smokescreen because their primary opponents during their time of struggle were socialists. They were very open in saying they wanted to reclaim the word from the left and give it back to the nationalist volkisch community on the right. They are no more socialist than North Korea is a "Democratic People's Republic" which is what their government is technically called.
Though cowards flinch and traitors sneer, we'll keep the red flag flying here!
Great, great song. Thank you Billy and Dick for this, to the tune that was intended for it.

Nowhere does Dick Gaughan get a mention. For the record he's the one that is doing this with Billy.

yeah, they really should have ousted Kruschev right at the beginning

For anyone confused by the Chinese Communist Flag that also comes up with this song - The Worker's Flag is the Red Flag and it is BEAUTIFUL

RIP Councillor Suzi Armitage Leeds
The intro is the german Christmas Song "Oh Tannenbaum"
Does this melody belong to something different in England/Ireland?
+Eneachril Beneathar Yes and no. The tune was adopted as the music to the red flag, and it usually sung to that tune. Oh Tannenbaum is still sung to the same tune. It all depends on the words being sung
It's the same thing "O Christmas Tree"

Such an improvement, to write this tune for it!

If you don't like us so much why do you want to hold on to us? Last remnant of empire maybe?
As stupid as Communism is, this is a wonderful song.
DimetriKhan Because 1, equality doesn't exist, and 2, well...history shows how much it fails.
