      Treats On The Streets ok think I figured out the problem the joint I bought isn't oem and there is play at the swivel portion which is magnified when driving making me feel and hear like something is loose going to just order the oem and spend the extra money

    Did you have any steering wheel vibrations at highway speeds before you put the e34 joint in? Ive been dealing with steering vibrations at higher speeds for a while. Iive replaced the FCABS, and the control arm ball joints look fine. Could a worn steering coupler be my issue?

    • @TreatsOnTheStreets
      @TreatsOnTheStreets  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think that is your issue. Vibration commonly comes from a bad Guibo, driveshaft center support bearing, wheel spacers, bad alignment, or unbalanced tires. You've got the right idea replacing the stuff you already have though, but you might want to look into that other stuff if you haven't already. Good luck!

  • @jcfinch4389
    @jcfinch4389 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    So the e34 fits. I just bought a 97 m3. Replaced the front lower control arm bushings sway bar bushing steering still has more play than i would like. I have a feeling this is the culprite. Especially after 20 years and 215000 miles. Lmk what you think.

    • @TreatsOnTheStreets
      @TreatsOnTheStreets  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Jc Finch I've also replaced the front lower control arm bushings with poly ones in search of sharper steering. The e34 steering joint has made a bigger difference than anything else I have tried. If you do it you'll notice an improvement.

  • @TheSkyrocket21
    @TheSkyrocket21 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Did you get the top or the bottom on first? Having some troubles. Also did you put the shorter half on the bottom connected to the rack? I'm doing it right now so some help would be greatly appreciated. I can't seem to get it onto both of the ends

    • @TreatsOnTheStreets
      @TreatsOnTheStreets  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      +David Mordechai lube it up with wd40. I oriented it the same way as stock, whichever end that one had up, long or short I don't remember. Put it on the top end of the column first and slide it up further than you need to. That leaves enough clearance to line up the bottom then slide it down over the steering rack end. After that you'll want to make sure the steering wheel is straight with the wheels before you wrap it all up.

    Hello, I know it is a bit late but I was wondering if for street cruising it is vibrating more or if it is the same ? I like to feel more connected to the car but I don't enjoy having hand massage 😅

    • @C330ZSP
      @C330ZSP 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I did it last month, I didn't really notice anything as far as vibrating, however there is obviously some new feel/ input from the wheel. One thing to note is as this mod has become popular the joint no longer costs 50 bucks they sell for around 120+tax and shipping.

  • @GearheadSynthesis
    @GearheadSynthesis 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    After having done this mod would you go so far as to do the z3 steering rack upgrade?
    I came from an FRS to this platform and I am so bent out of shape about this damn steering rack! When I drive my sister's FRS I remember how great that steering rack is. Do you think that this solid coupler will give it the same degree of responsiveness found on the s2k/86?

    • @TreatsOnTheStreets
      @TreatsOnTheStreets  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Maher Lawand all this does is sharpen the feel. It doesn't quicken the ratio at all so it will still feel slow. Before doing something like swapping the rack, I'd dry out the SLR mini kit for the e36. Not only does it add steering angle, but it also quickens the steering ratio a lot, especially in the first rotation of the wheel (40% quicker), and has some adjustability in other places as well. Much less extensive of a modification. Then at that point if it still isn't quick enough for you I'd go for the z3 rack. That's my plan at least. Stay tuned because I plan to snag that mini kit in the coming months.
      One thing to remember is the frs/Brz is a much newer car. Technology has come a ways. You're not going to find an older car such as an e36 with as good of a rack as an 86 without doing some modification.

    • @GearheadSynthesis
      @GearheadSynthesis 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Treats On The Streets yeah I understand that much. I've always hated the steering feel, and after a session in the twisties yesterday I got fed up. Once I would place the car for an entry into a corner, I felt the steering wheel fighting back with me to for me to get into position as well as keep it there. At the time, I said, f*** it I'm just going to sell it. Then I thought about this U-joint mod and Z3 steering rack, and thought maybe I should give that a shot before getting rid of it. I wasn't aware of the SLR mod, but it's super pricey compared to just swapping out a Z3 M rack with that you joint. I can probably get one from the wrecker for about $120 for both. Probably makes more sense just to try that before dropping five to six hundred on that SLR deal.
      I really like your channel, my E36 M3 is in similar condition to yours and we're around the same age. It's no coincidence that we were both looking into the same cars then going with this one. In all honesty I feel like I should have went with the S2000 or kept my FRS. Don't get me wrong, this torquey bastard is really fun around town, and has that composed adult side to it, but I can't help but treated like a porcelain doll.
      When I break traction on this thing I feel like it's very unpredictable compared to what I would experience in the 86. Are you running a rear sway bar? I also just did my differential bushings as well as my front differential mount bushing, the car drives amazingly now. Sorry this got super long - I'm just talking into my phone.

    • @TreatsOnTheStreets
      @TreatsOnTheStreets  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Maher Lawand you might find that tidying up the front end with some poly bushings will help a bit too. Tires make a massive difference as well. I remember when I first drove it I pulled over because I thought something was broken. The car was surprisingly rubbery and vague mid corner as well as had a lot of secondary motion on turn in. Come to find out it was mostly due to the tires having a weak sidewall, both front and rear. Got some much better ones and it sharpened up a ton! As far as precision mid corner I'd say definitely the knuckle will help as well as making sure you have a quality set of summer tires with a stiff sidewall that aren't oversized.
      I do have a sway bar. Both front and rear, as well as adjustable coilovers (Megan spec-rs). I don't know what the differences are in setups between yours and mine, but it's quite predictable and easy to catch on oversteer for me. The alignment I have helped a bit for me on that front as well.
      One thing I haven't done is the bushings in the rear like you have on the diff. I need to do those as well as poly subframe bushings. Even if the car is in good condition, the old rubber in the oem ones can make it wishy washy. I really liked what the front poly control arm bushings, trans and motor mount bushings did and I'm hoping I'll feel the same difference in the rear as well. Thanks for the input and of course thanks for watching! You'll have to update me with the rack and stuff if you end up changing anything. If you don't have offset bushings up front for added caster that helps firm up the steering a bit too.

    • @TreatsOnTheStreets
      @TreatsOnTheStreets  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Maher Lawand cool to hear someone of a similar age has similar interest and experience with shopping for a fun car!

    • @GearheadSynthesis
      @GearheadSynthesis 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Poly front end stuff is an option - although most of the bushings up front have been replaced with OE rubber pretty recently. I'm running -3.5* camber in the front and -1.8* in the rear with 7.4* of caster. I wrapped my square setup 8.5" wide style 24s 235/45/17 federal RSRs. They're known for their stiff sidewalls.
      I can catch the oversteer as long as I don't lift off the throttle when breaking traction. I'm running H&R sports on Koni yellows with GC camber plates. Do you have a true coilover setup, negating the need for the fat spring perch on the LCA? Also, did you change the tires before or after this solid joint?
      Thanks for responding! I'll keep you updated.

  • @ayarm9
    @ayarm9 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @TreatsOnTheStreets

    • @TreatsOnTheStreets
      @TreatsOnTheStreets  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +David Mordechai I did not have to unbolt the rack. The joint has room to slide up and down the steering column to create clearance for removal and installation. Lube it up with PB Blaster or WD-40 to help with that process. I don't have the info on exactly what website I got it from anymore, but when I searched online I remember seeing 2 or 3 websites selling them for that price.

    drifting to incoming motorcycle is just NO without excuses how wide the road is or that you keep it in your lane... for the mod I like it on my track/fun car but it would drive me crazy on daily... I don't need to feel "so much" road while I'm just cruising on highway

      +Namesi you're welcome, my pleasure! Haha life is too short to stay stock 😉. It will definitely stay clean, but stock... not so much. My wallet wishes it would stay stock though.

      If you own one of these for its monetary value, then you've missed the point.
