Holy Unboxing, Batman! The grail is back from CGC! Am I ready for disappointment?!?

- THE BIG CGC GRADING REVEAL! If you watched this video • I Won a Modern-Age Gra... you'll know that I scored a modern-age comic grail in an estate sale, and I sent it off to CGC to get graded.
It was in rough shape, and I had it pressed before I sent it out. It came back with a batch of about 14 other books I sent with it to get graded, and in this video we do the grand unboxing!
Hold onto your butts, who knows what grade it will get!

I'm honestly ecstatic. I wasn't playing loose with what I felt the grade was so I could pretend to be excited when it was higher. Bent corners + a 1" crease just don't seem to get you higher than a 7 or 7.5. So needless to say...BEYOND happy.

You might want to consider using pre-screen and Comic Capsules.
I have definitely considered a pre-screen. But my brain can't grasp paying $8 if it isn't a 9.8...and it only costs me $20 to slab it no matter the grade.
It's slightly faulty logic because it adds up over time. But my head says, "why pay $8 for them to just send it back??"
I'm working on my brain though :)

Congratulations on the 8.5 on your grail comic! I really thought it would top out at 8.0 like I commented in the other video. I'm sure that the crease being on the back mitigated that 1-in. crease a little.
You were closer than I was! And it wasn't like I had a harsh grader...they were just inconsistent though the whole batch. That one got a bit lucky I think...and I'll take it!

I think we are around the same age as I own many of the books that you have. I’m a huge Alan Moore, Frank Miller, John Byrne, Alex Ross, and MIchael Golden fan. Most of my remaining collection are from the 70’s, 80’s, and EARLY 90’s. I kept a bunch of my favorite books from the 80’s, including Tom Strong, Miracleman, Dark Knight Returns, McFarlane Soideys…all in pristine condition. I recently started submitting a few of my high value books for clean/press and grading. Can’t wait to see if I get 9.8’s or over!

That was a fun CGC submission unboxing Randy. I honestly don’t understand why some of the grades were erratic, I think you have a good understanding what grade some of those book should receive. Maybe the graders are not on the same page in the grading process. They clearly need to fix that issue. I personally have been using top loaders and Mylars to protect my comics. They are way more affordable and besides, they also take up less space! 😅

I'm definitely caught in a loop where I saw to myself, "Well, it's only $20 to grade it, might as well do it...". But like I said in the video, that adds up, and I need to buckle down on what I sent.
That submission ended up being 50% worth doing, and 50% a waste of time. I need to be better deciding what to do.
Kudos on the 8.5! The way you got it certainly makes for a much more interesting story than if you'd just bought a graded copy. And I don't think you're contradicting your stand on honest dealing. Like you said, it was a fair auction that at least, by the end, others were aware of. All good!

You need to get on board with the CGC game and keep resubmitting for higher grades

It does! The color breaking crease is an inch of the top corner on the back! The grader's notes just say, "light creasing". I got lucky.
Congrats on the 8.5. Your presser did a great job. I bought my BA 12 years ago from a seller on ebay from the U.K. it was the 1st time I bought something international. I was nervous as all heck. It came in decent condition. It was one of the 1st books I ever got graded, didn't even know pressing wss a thing back then. It came back a 9.0, fast forward over a decade later I've been pressing my own books now and this book is one that will be CPR'd soon, figures crossed I don't mess it up. Lol. Great video, always enjoy seeing the passion people have for this hobby. 👊🏼
Good luck, I hope you get an awesome grade bump! I'm too chicken to do any CPR yet, lol! I have a Superman #9 in a 3.0 that is filthy, and with a good clean and press I bet it could be a 4.0 to 4.5....but I'm terrified of having it done!
I have only bought one international book, from Canada, and it took like three weeks to get here and made me nervous as hell. Tracking was terrible. So I'm avoiding int'l for now.

Good for you, man! I paid $500 for my copy of that book also at 8.5... You didn't rip anyone off, they aren't paying you for your knowledge so it's not your job to tell them how much it's worth. But if you want you can always give them some extra business or even leave a tip or something as a thank you next time you go.

Is it cheaper to grade comics if I applied for membership ?
A paid membership is cheaper to get books graded than a free membership. I think with my elite membership it costs about $5 less PER BOOK you submit.
So if you are going to submit a bunch of books like I do, it's absolutely worth it to get a paid membership. I think the top tier of ELITE is $300 a year. But I saved $300 within a month or two just from the amount of books I sent in.
@SwarmofComics I was looking at the cgc website membership fees. It makes sense to send it instead VS going to the CON, wait in line and the fees are different.

Your presser was the MVP of that 8.5, they did an awesome job. I think the damage being on the back cover and not the front was also a factor in getting back a better grade.

I'm effing PUMPED for an 8.5!!! I think it's the most excited I've been for an unboxing. The journey from start to finish was just a lot, and it made me really happy to get that grade for sure.
