  • This is my "30 days in" review of the new DJI Action 2. I have used the DJI Action 2 for about a month now and I am still a little on the fence about it. It's a great camera, with many nice features but I don't know if I would classify it as a full-fledged action camera anymore due to some pretty severe limitations. However, for vlogging, travel/adventure, and pov shots I think it's a great versatile camera. Check out my thoughts after using the Action 2 for 30 days.

    I got mine and while I was expecting that overheating will be terrible, I actually did not have any issues as I do not really film for about 10 minutes in one go. It's turning out to be just right for me.

    Hey Sean,….another of your great, comprehensive reviews that include both Pro’s and Con’s!! Although extremely feature rich, the onboard battery & charging limitations, and most importantly the overheating with 4K that causes lengthy time delays in order to continue “filming” are great causes for concern and bypassing this product line. It seems like DJI (as a strong leader in miniaturization of photography and of course drones, felt they had to try and “one-up” Go-Pro with a new form factor, and threw in some gee-wiz horizon features etc in the Action 2, but failed to factor in that the average user wants to be able to “film” without overheating shutdowns that take a lunch break to neutralize! As they say, “to each his own”, and I was going to give DJI my money for this Action 2 due to its array of features and achievements, but due to those limitations I’m afraid that DJI will have to give me one rather than me buying one.

    Great 30 day in review of the new Action 2 from DJI. And your review helps answer a lot of questions I had about this new Action camera, and after taking everything into consideration, I don't really think it's for me. For many reasons, I will stay with my Hero 10 as my everyday all around video camera, for action and vlogging, and by that I mean to film B-Roll for my drone video's and for travel adventures. Your videos are among the most helpful ones on TH-cam.

  • @Ozpeter

    The chief issue with the Action 2 is the name - a bit of a marketing mistake. You could argue that it's really the Pocket 3 - it's more pocketable than the other Pocket cameras and shares some features. Mine has yet to get more than slightly warm in my real-world use so I'm not concerned about overheating. Was your data loss from camera to screen module a recent thing? I know there were some fixes and improvements in that area in the FW update a few days ago.

    I dont get enough info but is the screen module actual have extra battery inside to increase battery life or is it just a screen?
    though personally I do like the macro lens feature they have shown out of the box - and wonder now if gopro has a similar feature at thsi moment?
    do like the horizon leveling feature built in as you said at the end
    though you do make great points about the battery life and memory transfer issues hopefully they can fix those problems or have alternative addons to this modular system

    Don’t understand why anyone would say the Insta360 go 2 is better or comparable. Go 2 is not 4K. DJI will fix any overheating issue. They are a great company that always listens to customers and addresses problem in updates. Go 2 has no sd card option at all. No external mic. Insta360 is good for what is is but is not comparable from what I’m seeing. To many TH-cam reviewers are being influenced by all the free sponsorships and equipment they are getting from insta. The only possible advantage of the go 2 is the replaceable lens.

    I have been waiting a long time for a new action camera from Dji but this one is a fail .. there should be 128gb internal memory here in 2021 with the option to replace the screen..
    it 's an action camera.. it should have been an upgraded version of osmo action 1

      You might want to take a really close look at the OSMO Pocket. There’s no way to overstate the value of a 3-axis gimbal, which makes shots so fluid that it looks like you’re flying while cycling down a trail. I’ve taken my first Pocket to South Africa, Alaska, and Arizona, and it’s taken a beating. It’s been dropped at least a dozen times, and endured a couple of rain showers. It’s never failed me.
      I shoot a lot of time-lapses, and the Pocket does it incredibly well. With the Wi-Fi base attachment (a must have), you can set a tracking time-lapse up through your phone or tablet app easily. I’ve shot time-lapses over six hours long, by plugging the Pocket into a battery bank. So long as this camera has power and plenty of space to record data, it just keeps going and going.
      I have videos of driving through bumpy terrain in Kruger National Park, South Africa. The video looks more like a bird gliding over the road than it does a rough ride. I plan on getting a Pocket 2 eventually, but I can assure you that the original Pocket is a light weight beast of a device at a great price.
      I do recommend you purchase a quality housing for it. There’s a website in Australia called ScottyMakesStuff. He has the perfect durable housing that every Pocket owner should own, and a lot of other good stuff.

      I do have the Pocket and the Action. What has me interested with the Action2 is the form factor being that it's just like the old Hero Session, which I almost bought but got thr Pocket instead.

    • @MrAtlantafalcon
      @MrAtlantafalcon 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@HeadlessChickenTO It is a tiny little powerhouse of a camera. I’ve wondered how many police, private investigators, and government intelligence spooks use cameras like these. There are so many ways to disguise one and place it in a public setting to obtain footage of a subject or subjects, and then retrieve it later when no one is looking. A shelf in a dark area of a bar, or hidden inside a package sitting on a table, so the observer could monitor the surveillance with their back turned or not even in the same room and not being obvious.

      After owning the original Osmo Action and disappointed with this new design. Nobody talks about the connections between the pods. Eventually they will wear, possible corrosion and cause connection issues over time. $75 for spare battery, no replaceable lense and needing the cover to stop overheating. No Thanks, I'll wait for next release or just get GoPro 10.

  • @KaioshinAemi
    @KaioshinAemi 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I wish Action 2 has 128gb internal storage, and a way of charging without the power module. Plus a Bluetooth mic feature is a bonus. It’s late 2021, it’s possible but no camera company is doing it. If the price comes down to $300, I might give a try. I don’t mind waiting for Insta360 GO 3. Michigan is cold so I think overheating is too bad. I might use 2.7K or 4K30 most of the time. I wish Dji can just sell the camera mod separately though.

    This is a good time to bring in light to both DJI and GoPro with this release.
    For DJI
    1: DJI has serious limitations like battery life and the fact you cannot install the SD card to the camera module.
    2: You cannot charge and use a mic simultaneously on the Action 2 if you are motor vlogging.
    3: Cannot call it an action camera if it takes a hit and shatters the screen, glass and body and this form factor wont attract adventurous buyers.
    For GoPro
    1: Selling a camera for £450/$450 /€450 when you competition sells it for a 100 bucks/quid cheaper won’t help a struggling company.
    2: DJI offers the 155 degree field of view out of the box while you pay £100/$100/€100 for a Max lens mod is a rip off.
    3:Accessories in the box just don’t make sense when DJI provides magnetic attachments which are the most used and GoPro providing just 2/3 mounts which is mad considering the accessories listed on the site are bare expensive.

    I've been really waiting for the Osmo Action 2 and now that it's out i'm very disappointed. It could be ok when i'm trekking but while i'm on kayak it's a no-no: waterproof only with a limited storage space and battery life and the magnetic thingy doesn't inspire me a lot of confidence in serious rough conditions such as capsizing on the rapids or being struck in the middle of tree branches.
    In the end i bought an Osmo Action 1 in order to replace my aging GoPro and i've got a very nice deal from someone eager to jump straight to the new Action 2 🤣

    None of this design is innovative. DJI clearly didn't have any ideas and just thought they'd copy the functionality of the Insta360 Go 2 while also copying the modular design of the Insta360 One R. Yet, it doesn't take advantage of the size of the Go 2, and doesn't have the expansive options of the One R.
    You can't vlog with it unless you buy the extra second screen module because you can't see yourself, a stark contrast from when the Osmo Action was the first action camera with a front screen built-in. A waterproof case doesn't come with the box you have to buy it separate. When the battery eventually expires on the main unit you can't replace it like every single action camera we know. When you run out of battery, you can't keep shooting by swapping batteries either. You can't use the charging base as a remote like the Go 2. When you break the lens you can't replace it. When the screen breaks you can't replace it. Things we didn't have a problem with because for the last decade we've had a solution for it and its called waterproof cases and replacement lenses.
