    Really awesome work! I have a 1992 MTD garden tractor with 18HP opposed twin and I was about 25 mins into cutting other day and it just died out of the blue. I got it started back and puttered up to the garage and when I throttle down it would idle good but throttle up it died. I rebuilt the carb and fuel pump but no cigar. Took coil off clean it and while it was off I took plugs out and put thumb over each plug hole as I turned the flywheels and no compression on one cylinder the other sucked my thumb and blew on it so I took the bad side head off and the exhaust valve was sticking out. I pull it out so I'm guessing the keeper or retainer or however that works has come lose. Now I got to figure out how to get to those but your video was very informative I believe the engine you rebuilt is pretty much the same as my 422707 1510-01 model.

    Very good tutorial and documentation of the engine build.
    Mine has a rusty ign switch and no spark. When I unplug the pigtail from the switch it should have spark right?
    I haven't touched/cleaned the mag yet, but it is an electronic ign coil, correct?
    Thanks for the video.

    How come there's less or no video's of the 16hp twin cylinder craftsman engine but a bunch of those 18 and 19.5

    Thanks for the videos, very informative . I have the same model engine in a craftsman Gt6000. I've been using it for 5 years around the house pulling trees and brush to a burn pile, it has plenty of power. I haul a little bit of everything on a 4x10 trailer that it pulls with ease. It just started surging for some reason that I haven't figured out yet, any troubleshooting tips would be helpful and appreciated.

      I had a similar problem with my 18HP opposed Briggs, surging engine. Turned out to be water and garbage in the carburetor bowl. There is a nut near the base of the carb, just remove that nut and let the bowl drain out. Fixed my problem.

    You should paint and treat the metal on upper portion of the hood to stop the corrosion from eating too deep and or through the metal, tape off the original stickers and paint the upper part. Keep making videos great to see a younger person that has the interest and know how to work on those old motors in today's world people with this ability are fewer and farther between and is becoming a dieing art all those old engines I see In your videos hit n miss and the older Briggs and Stratton if people keep scraping this stuff and going with electric as replacement this mechanical know how will be forgotten electric might be easier but easy makes lazy that's one of the problems in today's world

    Now I want a Briggs opposed twin. How about stripping the hood paint and having it with a rusty finish?

    hey, do you know what the difference between an 18hp and 12.5 hp twin || is? Mine only has 12.5 according to the label. Can it be easily converted to 18hp? e.g. Just replace the crankshaft or is the engine a completely different one?

    I haven’t rebuilt one in 4 years because there’s not many in our area anymore
    But I have a dozen of them in old mowers so maybe this coming winter I can rebuild a few 😊😊😊

    Were the inside of the heads threaded to enable you to remove the muffler and use the pipe? I have an old Gilson tractor hydrostatic drive with the same engine, it's still running good. I had to change the coil once, and it was lots of fun, had to cut out a small part of the shroud so I could get to it and change it.

    What is the advantage of this over a "V" twin? Or is there?

    • @johnbrizendine7716
      @johnbrizendine7716 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The same reason a boxer engine puts out much more power than a comparable V engine. The opposing firing gives it a better stroke and more torque than a V engine. Opposing cylinder engines have more torque and better fuel efficiency. You should look up the legacy of the "boxer" engine and what it's all about. It's some crazy engineering.

    It would be cool if you could have it powder coated to the original paint and have a replacement decal made for it. At least get the rust/corrosion off it and seal the metal, or it will just keep rusting out more and more. Just put a bit of rust converter and touch up the paint, if nothing else. Would be sad to have the whole hood just keep rusting away. Or even just scrape the rust off and seal it with a bit of mineral oil. That rust will eat through it like cancer.
