The actual way to hold one is directly over the trashcan and then letting go. Then you go buy a 3rd party N64 controller that is actually made for human hands.
I had friends play it the way you are. Iv done it but I tend to play the so called normal way more often as that’s how I grew up so it’s ingrained in my brain.
Dont listen to people, theres no right way to hold a controller. If it works for you it works for you, thats just what youre comfortable with and people shouldnt judge for that!
I always thought it was meant to be used with your left hand to hold the middle part for 3d games or hold the side part for 2d games, and always keep your right hand on the part with the buttons. But thats an interesting way to do it, ill have to try it sometime
I love the N64,because well I love most video games. I agree though that it has not held up well. Also, that’s how I always held the controller, didn’t even know people held it differently 🤯
I mean, look at how pro NES Tetris players use that controller now. Zero chance of being able to play at that level any other way. Hold whatever controller in the way that makes the most sense to you.
You can hold it however you want, but to say that it isn’t written anywhere how to hold it is false. Look at the actual console manual and you’ll see. People didn’t just make it up out of thin air.
N64 probably the worst “retro” and at the time tbh, I have played the snes and PlayStation 1&2 way more than the N4 once the game cube was out it was the end of it, the best Mario kart is by far Double Dash.
I used to hold the controller like you do, felt totally fine
I don’t know why so many people were really against this.
Mainly love the 64 due to the fact for Conkers bad fur day. DK64 and the Banjo games love them
I’ve tried so hard to go back and love them again but it’s so difficult for some reason.

I recommend the Brawler 64 (Retro Fighters) or the Fleet Admiral (Hyperkin).

Keep doing what you’re doing man. Your kids learn history while gaming it’s incredible

3:00 omg I did the same! I also named Cloud, Link haha. 😅
Childhood obsessions are odd little slices of enjoyment and a bit of cringe.

It seemed some what intuitive. Your hands are jammed together close when you hold the middle grip.
I'm ready to throw hands over the N64 disrespect!

Hold the controller in any way that feels comfortable to you. There is no "right" or "wrong" way.
Are there many N64 games that make much use of both the d-pad and analogue stick? I can't think of any time I've wanted to switch between them.
Mostly fighting games.
