  • We head to Compton, Los Angeles to buy an absolutely wrecked 1985 Toyota MR2 (AW11) for $1000. We budgeted $1000 to fix it ourselves, and try and sell it for a profit! The Toyota MR2 is a legendary mid-engine car, and one of the best driving bargains one can have. The excellent 4AGE engine, found in the AE86, is what powers this little rear wheel drive pocket rocket. Hope you all enjoy!

      I think you guys need to work a bit more on your negotiating skills though.. You should had started lower like 800 and than work your way up till you you get to a point where you both can agree on a nr..
      And say something like...This is absolute the highest i am willing to go.....and do not be afraid to walk away...... In the end it is business and you try to make some money from it... Lets face it......its a 1985 car..
      If you had negotiated right....I think you may had got it for even less than 1300 or less than 1000....You are probably going to need to buy Parts as well and i do not know how hard they are to get for a 1985 MR2

      Tips Winston: flash up a one page vehicle spec on screen (I thought it might have been a rotary for example); show some repair details and fun happenings and trouble especially when things go wrong replacing parts and repairing not just opening parcels.. Cheers. Oh and don't ever take any negative comments I might make the wrong way: bad publicity is still good publicity since that guy is still frigging watching your video hahah!

I hope you pick more underdog cars like this in the future. I double dare you guys to try and find a VW Thing. They're weird as hell and are a hot ticket collectors item these days. They go for $10K minimum in decent shape. If you could find a wrecked one and revive it you could make a killing.

      I know exactly what you mean. I have changed the hubs on my car, the starter, lots of other things. But my steering column came loose. I saw a video on how to do it, I could have done it, it didn't require any special parts (but two pullers!). But it would have been a complete pain and I probably would have put it back together wrong. I was like, well, I'd rather pay a pro a hundred bucks to just do it rather than spend an entire weekend on it. And that happened and I'm still happy as hell I found someone to do it.

    • @ExVeritateLibertas
      @ExVeritateLibertas 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@james5460 the problem is the number of "pros" who don't care about your car and do a shit job. Leave parts missing, disconnected, etc. Then still charge you top dollar. I guess that's why they say a good mechanic is worth his weight in gold.

    I almost expected the restore would be spread over 25 episodes of small work each video like we're used to in all these channels. But to see it done in a 28 minute video was quite awesome. (Admittedly maybe you can create secondary content about the restore in more detail but hope you keep the one episode one car restore video too.)
    Also, as far as TH-camr cliche's you haven't dipped into the "I BOUGHT A LAMBO" or "I GOT PULLED OVER" wells yet. That was quite refreshing.

Other then that it's pretty darn good...Just that I broke a piece when removing the starter to check it. . . the after market alarm has been a rats nest, it didn't come with keys or anything! They're doing a really different format in which one show is about the totality of the dealings with one car, beginning to end, and then they do follow-up episodes with the mechanical details of the different repairs for those that want the details. I think that's why C-milk is so prominent in this, because the mechanical details segments to come will have Winston front and center (mostly?).

    To add on the thoughts at the end of the video: The major reason why we can't get affordable cars as "fun" anymore (and they definitely don't apart from the ND Miata or Lotus models) is because regulations kill off any hope for lightweight.
    Chapman said the key is "adding lightness" and it truly is. Since cars are now much heavier we don't get unassisted steering anymore: Less fun. Now they've taken away hydraulic steering for electric: Even less fun because they can't replicate the connected feeling of hydraulic. Safety standards are simply taking out the emotion and replacing it with isolation. They are refined in the wrong ways, unlike the refined quality of 80s-90s Toyota products.
    I want to feel the road, the engine, and the brakes. It makes me appreciate Mazda and Lotus today. I have hopes Toyota's recent focus on performance cars (Akio said this himself) will bring us a new MR-2. I already love what they did with the GR Yaris.

    Great stuff even for people like me who don’t like cars in particular. I’ll like your chemistry no matter the context.
    I do want to say that the video would feel smoother with beter transitions between the different takes, look at the one between the part where you told about selling the car followed by the reminiscing as an example of what I think can be improved.
    Really hope this channel takes off fast, because you do earn it.

      @@ratj4715 look at the steering wheel while they are doing the 0-60 mph tests. You can clearly see that it's not center while driving straight. It's off quite a lot. There's a scene where the camera is between Winston (driving) and C Milk (passenger) facing towards the windshield during these tests. You'll see it. I didn't notice at first until Peter mentioned it. I personally would had never drove it with that bad of an alignment. From my own personal experience a suspension table can literally break free of the frame resulting in a serious crash or death. It happened to me! It's physics. Speed + suspension pulling to one side, etc over time = a lot of torque and weight. Eventually something is going to give way, especially on an old vehicle. But Winston seems to know his stuff and probably concluded that it wasn't out of alignment due to anything too serious.
