Just what I was looking for. I just went natural and have been waiting to grow my hair out. I have an afro and I want to shape it so that my coils look cute and more polished. I had to adjust the guard size cause my hair isn't as long as yours but I just needed direction on how to achieve the tapered look on sides and back. thank you. And FYI you're gorgeous.

Still loving this cut in 2020. About take down my back and sides but need to grow out my top more to achieve this look.
It works for shorter length as well. Just keep the back and sides maintained as the top grows out 🖤

I have seen a lot of videos about how to taper, this is among if not the best. I have already kinda figured out about doing it but I just took a lot of from this one.Well, actually, like ...everything! Thanks, this is very well done!.
Update: I did my hair recently. I got a low sides and back and full top, although a bit round shaped and not fully squared, more like a semi mini fro.
The guards n4, n5,n6 etc are converted to mm in my set, and I think it refers to the distance between the clippers blades and the guards "floor" So measuring with a ruler can actually give you a close number.
My hair, which is very tightly coiled and mixed, would say 4c for an almost exact reference, is not meant for fully passing those guards. If I do so, my guard 8 is aprox 2.5 mm which translates to 2.5 cm. My hair fully "extended" by picking a strand from my head is aprox 8 cm (weeks ago...) so if the guard sucessfully pass thorugh my head, it would leave it almost bald in comparison! Well, something like 2/4 of the length.
For fros shapes, its better to do it by freehand, even if lowering its size. Then guards would be useful for the low sides, as my biggest one, a whal 8, is just a mere 25mm or 2.5 cm or 1 inch.
If I am correct, which seemed to be the case as my recent experience, then I would suggets to be careful using guards on your sides, I would do it by freehand too, as I recently did. Or if using guards, do not push it in, but scoop the hair out, in which case a I'm thinking a freehand would be more precise.
