Impacts and aftermath of Hurricane Milton in Florida

  • (AP) Hurricane Milton churned across Florida on Thursday after plowing into the state as a Category 3 storm, bringing misery to a coast still ravaged by Helene, pounding cities with winds of over 100 mph (160 kph) after producing a barrage of tornadoes, but sparing Tampa a direct hit.
The storm tracked to the south in the final hours and made landfall Wednesday night in Siesta Key near Sarasota, about 70 miles (112 kilometers) south of Tampa. The situation in the Tampa area was still a major emergency as St. Petersburg recorded over 16 inches (41 centimeters) of rain, prompting the National Weather Service to warn of flash flooding there as well as other parts of western and central Florida.
Tropicana Field, the home of the Tampa Bay Rays baseball team in St. Petersburg, appeared badly damaged. The fabric that serves as the domed stadium's roof was ripped to shreds by the fierce winds. It was not immediately clear if there was damage inside. Multiple cranes were also toppled in the storm, the weather service said.
St. Petersburg residents also could no longer get water from their household taps because a water main break led the city to shut down service.
The storm knocked out power across a large section of Florida, with more than 3 million homes and businesses without power as of early Thursday, according to poweroutage.us, which tracks utility reports.
Before Milton even made landfall, tornadoes were touching down across the state. The Spanish Lakes Country Club near Fort Pierce, on Florida’s Atlantic Coast, was hit particularly hard, with homes destroyed and some residents killed.

It annoys me how YT ensures all reports of the hurricane are only filtered through official news sites.
I find the best coverage comes from peoples personally uploaded videos, but YT makes those videos near impossible to find unless one has a direct link. There are hundreds of thousands of videos, maybe millions or more videos on YT that basically lay dormant, with a few dozen views because they're unsearchable, but it's these videos that often allow viewers to link the dots, but sadly they're hidden, buried by the algorithms.
Don't get me wrong, news channel reporters do a good job, but they can only tell a part of the story from a narrative point of view rather than a personal one.

And why would they actively do things like make TH-cam search worse over the years while simultaneously pushing people to forget about subscriptions to instead get videos from the algorithm fed to them.

So this was supposed to be a catastrophic hurricane one time in a century. This does not look to be as severe as they predicted hurricane Helene looked to be much more devastating, causing a significant amount of damage. This seems much less.

It weakened before it hit. I didn't think that it would but they were right. Still there is lots of damage with this across the state especially the terrible tornadoes that were worse with this storm, over 100 of them. Almost no coverage about the tornadoes yet. Power was out for a month after Hurricane Charley in 2004 so I know what these people have ahead for them in the Florida heat. I was only without power for 2 days in Charley and it was awful. I had flying ants in my bed when I woke up the second morning. The humidity is terrible, mold smell.

We aren’t all red, 4th gen FL Native here. Blue as blue can get. Can’t afford to leave FL, lost our jobs right before Helene with a massive layoff and have been reeling ever since.
No money = no hurricane prep for Milton. Everything is soaked, house is buckling under its weight due to water. We just had our baby a few months ago and now we’re in dire need. Was denied unemployment at 4am (which I’ve been fighting them for weeks-) and STILL haven’t heard back from FEMA about Hurricane Helene. (Can’t even apply for Milton yet, checked the website twice this morning.)
Sad times we’re living in. Politics shouldn’t matter but seeing people yelling “That’s what the MAGA people get!” While I have a house right next door is crazy. Im the first to tout my blue flag, everyone is downplaying or denying us help.
We are screwed here in FL.
