Can we stop putting weather people out in the field during hurricanes? We understand what wind and rain are
But they LOVE it. You can’t stop them. This is what they live for. They don’t get out in it once the storm has made landfall unless it’s a mild storm.
After Helene, absolutely no one could get into the most devastated communities, including reporters.
As a result, misinformation spread by opportunistic bad faith actors has greatly harmed those folks.
@@irenafarm there may have been some areas that they couldn’t get to because it of the damage and it may not have been passable, but trust me, they are always on the ground somewhere. They will chopper in and get in boats and travel through the flooded streets. It’s what they do. It’s what they live for. And they play a big roll in helping to get information, supplies and rescue efforts out.

They take precautions. The explosion of deliberately spread misinformation after Helene, shows how important it is to show what’s happening in real time. Helene took out cell service and physically cut off the worst affected areas.
So there were no reporters on the spot - and bad faith actors immediately took advantage of that to misrepresent the situation there.
But that’s the exciting part of being a reporter… is being in the mist of the action, no?

I followed two Instagram users who said they’re not leaving, one hasn’t posted in 12 hours and one is calling for rescue because the windows in her condo have busted out and water is flooding in. Both had pets and children.
Their foolishness may cost them everything. It’s unfortunate but their choice

I went to Homestead after Andrew, after everyone roofed for a year I got into the shutter business. My boss, Jeff Robinson, was an integral part of changing the building codes. Setting the standard as Dade Co for all South Eastern USA 10 miles inland. Which are extremely stringent. Everyone that rebuilds or remodels has to follow those codes, resulting in much more secure dwellings. Most of the houses suffering catastrophic damage are the older homes, grandfathered in. Prayers, I've witnessed 1st hand the awesome power!

I lived in Florida for over 20 years and I remember going through the hurricanes in 2004 my house was 2 ft underwater within an hour. The storms are definitely getting more intense and repetitive. I don't think the insurance companies will stay in Florida to cover these people and they will have to think of not building on water like they have forever because it's changed the climate is changing in the water is heated up
The writing has been on the wall and they should not have been building things anywhere near the water. Global warming is real people
Why in Florida same building codes like in other states? Architecture should be prepared for such events, houses should be on pillars, 4 feet off the ground, and built more from concrete and steel, instead of paper...its common sense in other countries.

I woke up this morning and it’s a mess, trees and vegetation everywhere and my neighbors fences have fallen over, no power, but nothing close to Tampa and Sarasota just pure devastation, praying for everyone’s safety.

I saw a tiktok by having neurologist that said that you don't have to leave the state. You just have to go 5 to 10 miles inland so you're not in the path of the storm surge that comes from the coast.

FEMA has provided more than $137 million in assistance to six states in the southeast, including 7,000 federal personnel, nearly 15 million meals, 14 million liters of water, 157 generators and more than half a million tarps. More than 3,000 North Carolina residents have been rescued or supported by more than 1,200 urban search and rescue personnel, with recovery efforts aided by National Guard and active duty troops. North Carolina has also received $100 million in federal transportation funds to rebuild roads and bridges washed out by the storm.
Everything is relative tho. 137million in aid is peanuts if damages are in Billions. Not sure where the truth lies as seems to be the era we're living in. I just hope atleast during disasters like this, we all come together as people have for thousands of years. Is our social fabric so torn up we can't even muster the most ingrained human virtue? I hope not.
I wouldn't be surprised if FEMA funds have been dried up seeing how we have been acting and governing for decades now. No equity in community.

Neighbors all got together here and cleared streets of trees. It took about 8 hours, but they made a path, even down the main thoroughfare. Government didn’t do a damn thing to help. I am not sure how it is in Great Britain, but here in America somewhere in the 90s our news networks decided to pick sides. Before that our news prided themselves as a fourth check and balance but we have moved on from that. Propaganda in its purest form.

Judith Curry Climate Scientist says there is no climate emergency. The last hurricane worse than this one in the Gulf was in 1921 and before that 1848 so roughly every 100 years the Gulf has a major hurricane. So that is not more frequent but on schedule. You will probably argue dinosaur farts cause the one back in 1848 though. They should have instituted new building codes a century ago. If it happens once, good chance it will happen again.
