Bradenton is south of Tampa, was not directly under the hurricane to my understanding. I hear it hit Tampa. Also, it was Category 5 and was around 3-4 for a while. That's serious stuff. The Mayor of Tampa said "If you stay, you will die." I do not believe what she said is illogical.

I evacuated Tampa on Sunday, am in a hotel in Georgia. Neighbors said our houses are safe with no damage. I'm going to stay here maybe another week before returning.

It might just be harder to get into those mountains (fewer roads and such to begin with), but that was the same way for Hurricane Irene, where there was massive, widespread destruction in the Catskills, but all the NYC news outlets could cover was Long Island residents complaining they didn't have power.

Ex Beachfront property owners for 11 years and sold property a few years ago. We were fortunate to have no severe storms during our ownership in the Florida panhandle, but our unit had been gutted a year before we bought it, and the town received major damage from Michael right after we sold. I will say, we will never own there again but will visit to help those communities if we can. It’s a gamble being a rental property owner there, and can be nerve wracking in every way. But please, if you want to vacation there, watch the weather, and do go and support those businesses when they reopen.

In the TH-camr's video, he shows extensive damage and the empty valley/ravine filled with debris where the flood was.. but checking Google Earth, there dozens of businesses and homes that sat right there, where the valley is now. They are just.. gone, an empty valley now.
Specifically look up the Village Scoop in Chimney Rock, SC. Every building on that side of the road is gone completely.

This rebuilding and repair in these areas must stop. I'm tired of my homeowner's insurance being jacked up to subsidize people who are too stupid to learn. The insurance companies need to pay for the damage and refuse to cover any future dwellings or businesses in hurricane-prone zones. It's purely socialism to keep paying for a few people to keep doing the same stupid thing.
You are spot on. A tornado is a small risk, most all people will never experience one. A hurricane is going to hit these areas at some point, yet they want to live near the water. Yeah, I love the water too, but would not live there and expect someone else to pay for all my rebuilding when I get hit.

So in 2004 Florida had 4 hurricanes in 6 weeks. 2 made landfall 2 miles apart. Hurricane season is unpredictable.
They should push forward in time any early voting opportunities in NC and FL if at all feasible.
That damage is NOTHING compared to what happened to Joplin, Missouri and Moore, Oklahoma because of tornadoes. The damage from the Moore, Oklahoma was 2.2 Billion Dollars just in that city alone. That's on top of 164 people who had died.

I was flicking through various YT channels and they all made it sound as though Gulf Coast Florida was about to be obliterated. They seemed almost disappointed that it had been downgraded to a Cat4 a couple of hours before landfall. That's when I knew it would be a Cat3 or less eventually.

I will say the reporter's comment about the refrigerator if found in the road would be from Helene was a bit odd followed up by saying to the General himself, "You didn't get to all of it, but you certainly tried" was a bit insensitive considering they worked their rearends off to help. People move to Florida knowing the risks, and some rebuild disaster after disaster. The exceptions are the poor, children, and the people forced to be there for military purposes.

I'm an old Florida Conservationist. Way back in the sixties, we tried to prevent the beachfront development in Sarasota and Venice area to preserve the pristine sugar sand beaches and prevent/diminish disasters like these. They pretty much ruined it with their ridiculous beach renourishment programs that used coarser sand filled with imported coquina shells. They let us write articles and speak. We didn't protest back then. I doubt it would have helped. The greedy folks in local government let Yankee developers and speculators from other parts of the state have their way.
