    that line from sans when I was so anxious to replay the game to get another ending, where he says "leave frisk to live their life, they are happy now". that really struck me. i felt bad resetting the game, even this planned programmed dialogue had me questioning myself XD Undertale truly is a different game

      Undertale does have alot of lessons and makes you feel guilty when you do the wrong choice such as genocide or resetting.

    I'm going to be honest; I'm scared of watching this video. I know it's going to articulate exactly what I've felt since I was just a kid. And it'll make me cry.
    Even before I could articulate what it really was, when I was just a dumb kid mashing buttons, I'd always been afraid of the feeling that came with completing something, anything, and leaving it for good.. I could never let myself settle for too long after finishing a book or a game or a movie or whatever; it was always onto the next trend or passion pit I could sink hours of my life into. I'd convince myself that this obsession was special, that I would play this game or remember that movie forever until I'd lose interest and move on, find another "irreplaceable" passion. One day I'll lose interest in Undertale, and that scares me. For me, its like losing a part of what makes you you; saying goodbye to these characters that have changed your life. And I don't want to leave them behind.
    I don't want to let go.

      +skittles gamer There might be pain involved in leaving a game behind, but you shouldn't let that deter you from loving a game ever again. The joy you'll experience from playing a truly beloved game will always outweigh that feeling of loss.

      I'm exactly like this! my passions go in phases and I'm afraid that one day even Undertale will be replaced by another obsession like all the others. however I do believe I will always love this game even if I move on from it. all the passions I had before still hold a special p.ace in my heart even if I'm not obsessed with them anymore.

      +Haru Bell Yeah,i throw myself into a game often. Games like Omega Ruby can be replayed,but when I beat the elite 4,i had undescribable emotions,and was extremely happy that after the Elite 4,i could get starters from other regions,and I could catch Rayquaza and Deoxys. Even though my deoxys had crap IVs.

      hm, I have thought about it. Maybe the world is even stronger than the rest of the Undertale gang and Frisk?
      like a DBZ thing. Goku and the Z fighters going from Earth to Namek. A large power increase.

    • @tonyi2430

      although that's only for Undertale. Personally I do think about the ending of a game and think of something similar to the DBZ thing, them advancing and getting better.

  • @SLKibara

    In my opinion, Undertale never ends unless we make it end.
    If we end, Undertale will end.
    If we continue to talk about it, Undertale will continue.
    Since Undertale is a game that revolves around Timelines, there are many stories to tell.
    Underswap, Mafiatale, Underfell, Underline.
    All those AU's are still part of the game.
    We continue the story in our own way.
    With new Characters, new settings and new enviroments to explore.
    Undertale is a game that invites the players in and allows them to make their own adventure.
    If we stop making our own adventure, Undertale finally comes to a halt.
    Nice video Swanky, really nice.

    • @Laully
      @Laully 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Especially because there are a few characters that know every choice you made, and detect or remember portions of your choices when you go back because the timelines and choices are valuable pieces to the outcome of different areas (if that made any sense). • @ChalleFenChalle20
      @ChalleFenChalle20 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Joshogunyan that's what my thought are like. i feel like I'm slowly going insane because it's been a few months and I still keep thinking about it. I'm getting closer to resetting the game with each day as I stop feeling as bad as I did before slowly, turning on my game just to stare at the screen and turn it off again. i don't know when it will be but I know I'm going to replay the game no matter how horrible I feel afterwards and that's what makes me afraid. "you can't imagine knowing what it feels like. knowing that it's all going to reset" is what made me think that I really can't understand it and truth be told, once I reset again I'm going to be scared. i know what's going to happen and yet I'm always going to be afraid because the game feels like it's alive, it makes you believe as a player that someone will come up and just ask "why did you take away our happy ending?". i felt like crying when I wrote this and I know you probably don't care but I don't know anyone who has a passion for undertale like I do and I'm hoping that as a fellow undertale fan you will understand.

    I haven't had any issue letting game characters go as long as the story arc closes. And in Undertale, it goes even farther than that, because Flowey in a Pacifist Route tells you that they'll be fine, and because you don't True Reset, you know that perfect timeline will continue without you. And Frisk will continue with their friends the way it's supposed to be. The issue starts when you did a Geno-Pacifist ending. Because then it confirms you that Chara will destroy everything and reset so they can do that again in an endless, hellish loop. And there's nothing you can do about it. You may leave the game, but they'll continue suffering as they're trapped in there with them. And there's no way to save them. You fucked up.

    • @3lH4ck3rC0mf0r7
      @3lH4ck3rC0mf0r7 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I don't need to know what happens after Undertale. There's no questioning that.
      I don't need an Undertale sequel.
      I'd really love a prequel though... Many interesting things happened before you even accepted the fallen human's name and started the game.

    • @misanthropicchara6661
      @misanthropicchara6661 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +3l H4ck3r C0mf0r7 My roleplayer never understood why people were so focused on making Alternate Universes, changes the characters personalities in so many manners...when they had 7 explorable characters open to them if they just went back in time.

    • @3lH4ck3rC0mf0r7
      @3lH4ck3rC0mf0r7 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Misanthropic! Chara To me, if I find a good AU, I'll read it without linking it to the game at all. Many AUs feel better to me as I ignore the way things go in the main game.
      Rarely an AU becomes my headcanon. A case of this is DreemurrReborn's storyline, and a theory of my own where Sans and Papyrus are pieces of Gaster, along with the many other pieces scattered through time and space, and that he's the true first human, not Chara.

    • @misanthropicchara6661
      @misanthropicchara6661 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      3l H4ck3r C0mf0r7 Hmm...how to frame this? I think you have misunderstood. They (my roleplayer) never assumed that others were taking it as a headcanon. And they do enjoy some Alternate Universe stories and comics, such as LoverOfPiggies' Error!Tale.
      It's important to seperate the difference between the AU's and regular fanfiction, though.
      Fanfiction has a tendency to explore features within the series. That's the point of fanfiction. So hypothesis such as Sans & Papyrus being parts of Gaster...They are not Alternate Universes in the true sense. They are a possibility that has not been dismissed by the game nor Toby Fox.
      Other things, such as "What ifs..?" are also normal to such fanfiction. An example would be Frisk giving their soul to Asriel.
      Those are not Alternate Universes, not in the original sense.
      In the Disney Fandom, would considering Tarzan to be the lost brother of Elsa and Anna be an AU? No, it wouldn't. It's merely speculation. But the Undertale fandom would misuse AU for that purpose, as you have just done.
      What my roleplayer is referring to are the literal Alternate Universes: Underswap, Underfell. These aren't speculation; they are actual distortions of characters' personalities. To use the Disney fandom again, Underswap would be like giving Elsa Anna's bubbly personality; or perhaps trading Cinderella's lack of determination for Aurora's bravery. Or if we're talking about Underfell, then making them all gothic and edgy. Those are *alternate universes*.
      Having clarified my definition, I'll be as brief with my roleplayers question as I can:
      "Why are people so focused on changing around characters personalities instead of playing with the universe they've been given? The obvious route was to take the SOULs colors and make tons of OCs. Like what bronies do with cutie marks. What on Earth happened? Why did it take this strange route? I feel like I'm living in an AU!"

    • @3lH4ck3rC0mf0r7
      @3lH4ck3rC0mf0r7 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Misanthropic! Chara If it hasn't even been mentioned, it doesn't have to mean it happened. Creating an entire universe around this "what if" essentialy creates what you call an AU. Error!Tale has a classic UT universe in LoverofPiggies's multiverse. So it adds to Undertale itself, which didn't ever talk about multiverses in that way, so it's not necessarily ruled out, yet... It's an AU.

    I say the video game dimension is a real thing.
    My friends and I always referred to the video game dimension of our own imagination as the pixel dimension.
    Don't judge too harshly, but I always like to think my favorite shows and games are actually real and do exist, but like most things in this universe, hasn't been discovered dimension to dimension yet.

      *wears nerd glasses*
      umm.. so there are 2 theories: the multiverse theory and the omniverse theory.
      If these theories are true, it means thet outside our universe are a HUGE amount of other universes all inside our multiverse and a HUGE amount of multiverses inside one omniverse.
      Also there's a third theory going with these two: The infinite universe theory.
      If all these three are correct, the total amount of universes in omniverse is infinite, which would mean *if it goes with the laws of the universe, multiverse and omniverse, everything is real.*
      *takes of glasses*
      isn't it just great °u°

    Yeah, Undertale has an incredibly satisfying ending. I really love the idea of allowing you to chat with everyone for a bit; Earthbound and Paper Mario, two of Toby's inspirations, do this as well. But even if the ending is satisfying, when that big 'the end' appears I always have this sense of loss and loneliness.

    I feel like the No Mercy perspective should also be observed. If one was to observe this game from the perspective of a typical RPG, then Chara's final words pretty much sum up how one moves on from a game:
    - Now.
    - Now we have reached the absolute.
    - There is nothing left for us here.
    - Let us erase this pointless world, and move on to the next.
    "There is nothing left for us here". We move on from games because we have experienced all they have to offer, and must find new experiences.

      I get that a lot with any sort of immersive experience, especially anime. after such an experience, I would have trouble integrating into normal life, as weird as it is to say it like that. it's just like you remember that there is a world out there, you live in it, and events happen in it. it's just a very awkward feeling, and thankfully it doesn't last long, but I've dubbed it Finale Shock.

    To leave Undertale behind was even somewhat uplifting. You see, the world is saved and everything turned out in a way that the characters really seemed to enjoy. Flowey/Asriel even hopes you don't simply reset the timeline and bring all the poor things back into the misery that they had to endure for so long. I don't even want to reset the game anymore.
    Mother 3 did the same to me, everyone tells you - the player- that the'll be fine and even wish you the best luck for your endeavours in real life, even going so far that they tell the world to be good to you. Then, before the Credit rolls starts to play out everyone you saved says goodbye and then its done.

    This video encompasses a feeling I've never been able to explain. It's an extension of empathy, and compassion, in an odd way.. I've never known anyone to feel the same way. I'm happy to know someone else out there does, and Undertale has done the same thing for him. Thank you for talking about this- I know it sounds silly, but it really meant a lot to me in a way that's hard to describe. Thank you.

    You know I can tell you that Undertale is a game I legitimately cried over. After I finished the game the first time it filled me with so many feelings. Many bad feelings sadness, disappointment, regret, and an empty feeling I get every time I think about how we couldn't save Asriel. Many good feelings as well integrity, happiness, love, compassion, and higher sense of morality. I'm very glad I decided to play this game, but I feel...incomplete.

  • @MrBoogieboy100

    I EXTREMELY like these videos, and this channel was the channel that introduced me to Undertale further. I always feel like I'm a part of a helping hand, no matter what, in real life, or in games. I'm rooting for you, though! I feel as though I wondered as though what happens when you leave a game. But, the real tear-jerker for me was when Asriel said, "Take care of mom and dad for me, ok?" That really got me when I was recording. I said, "Here come the feels!", and started crying when I realized that Toriel and Asgore were married, but then divorced for some reason. Asriel grew on me, for some reason, even though he was mean towards everyone, he said that one line, and it felt as though it was over, my whole adventure was said and done.
    But, just wanted to say, I'm rooting for you, hope you become one of the most popular theorists out there. Keep it up!

      I still wish there was some way of saving Asriel. Not just redeeming him. He was such a nice and kind goat kid. His actions as Flowey were because he didn't have a soul, and Flowey even stated how hard he tried to feel the emotions for his parents despite that. That made me feel for even Flowey. Made me wish deep inside that he didn't have to become a flower again.

    I just have to say that I really enjoy your videos.
    As someone who watches a lot of gaming videos, yours stand out as one of the few gaming related videos that come across as very calm and... trying to find a second word... clean? I hate to sound so negative, but many youtube channels about gaming feel like they're full of chaos and tons of swearing, and over time I find that stuff really loses its appeal.
    Keep doing what you do, you're great at it.

    I share your feelings about Undertale as well Swanky. For a long time now I had not really felt much from all the games I had played, sure I felt excitement and satisfaction when playing through Metal Gear Rising on revengence mode and the world of Dark Souls and Bloodborne always keep me interested in them but none of them actually made me truly care about the world or the characters in it. UT managed to make me feel the way about it's world like how I used to feel about game worlds when I was a kid. I was, and still am, completely invested in the world of UT and to me it is a real thing because even though the game itself is over I will always carry the world and it's characters with me.

    I don't think it counts,but Homestuck was a beautiful journey.
    I was one of those people who remembered Homestuck from Undertale.
    I beat Undertale somewhere in October,and got sad since there was nothing left of Undertale,and I knew I couldn't do genocide.
    But then I realized that Toby Fox sounded familiar.
    I looked up Toby Fox,and scrolled through some Undertale junk.
    Till I found a link to the Homestuck music site.
    I listened to some songs,and as I went on,some of them were really familiar.
    Then I find the page to Homestuck.
    I was sent to a random page,a page not too far in.
    More then 100 though.
    Then I clicked "Start Over" since I had no idea what was going on.
    "A young boy stands in his bedroom...."
    Ahh,the first words.Those first amazing words.
    Anyways,I continued on.
    I made it though the flashes,pages,and gifts.
    Then I got addicted after [S] Cascade.
    I made it through Act 6,and was sad at [S] Game Over,thinking it was the end.
    Then came [S] Collide.
    I was amazed how much work..

    • @trashhCD
      @trashhCD 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Was put into this.
      7 years,7 YEARS of Homestuck was made.
      Then came Act 7.
      I was never so sad my life to when I clicked the arrow.
      To see the words...
      THE END
      I sat there,for minutes trying to think what just happened in those 2 months I spent reading Homestuck.
      2 Months.
      2 months well spent.
      After that,after ALL that,I sat there.
      And I though.
      What just happened?
      Gamzee and Calliborn and....
      No,I can't.
      But.
      BUT!
      There is still Hiveswap.
      (Don't worry that is just a joke)
      So I went outside.
      And I thought about their lives.

    This video is extremely relatable. I found this in a lot of games I played growing up and even now, seeing the friends you made and adventures you had all end in credits is emotional and I honestly really do feel empty after finishing a game. A lot of games had done this for me, especially games where there's no end game. Games like Fire Emblem Awakening and Undertale offered this. I felt empty realising my adventure and experiances had come to an end and I honestly wandered what would happen next and sadly there were honestly not many answers. Only video games can offer these emotions, movies and music can only go to a certain part of my emotions. This is honestly why Undertale made me questions what I was striving for as it all comes to an end sadly very quickly...

  • @xerzy

    I actually don't think the world "disappears" when you close the game. I actually have a vague theory about timelines being connections of ideas which are organized by our minds as events, with the ability of being reproduced as ideas they are, and as such, creating new timelines.
    Consider this. Toby Fox created Undertale, hence creating the "original" timelines. In his mind reside the "true" versions of Frisk, Chara, Sans, Papyrus, Toriel and so on, and their first derivatives as well (since he designed the game with various routes with many possibilites that he had to think about). As he was developing, "living" those experiences, he went copying them into the game, doing constant feedback between his mind and the game, creating new timelines with the new changes each time. When the final timelines have been created, fulfilling the desires of the creator, these are released to the public in the form of a "video game", which is actually a way to "reproduce" the necessary steps for creating a new timeline on others' minds. The game itself can't do anything, it has no life, it's just some bunch of zeros and ones, which a computer use to generate some lights and sounds, respond to keys being pressed, etc. So, when a new game begins, the people who are playing it are interpreting the computer's input and creating a _new_ timeline based on what the game's giving them. When the game changes the rules, the player accepts (and this is important, "accepts") to modify their version of the timeline according to these changes. Then, when the game is over, you still do carry on that timeline, but *you decide what happens to it*. If you decide not to modify it because the changes are not reflected in the game, then it will be kept freezed, being this is the most usual choice. If you _do_ decide to modify it, however, it will. This is what happens with fanfics and other kinds of fan-made content, which is always derived from the players' _experiences_, the personal timelines, and not from the game itself. Keep in mind though, if you come back to the game and find that new events happened that contradict your new version, you will probably end up creating a new "forked" timeline and discarding the "bad" version of the timeline.
    So, I think that the world had _never_ been in the game. It was actually living on our minds, being developed on them as we reproduced the game like "thoughts & feelings' machines", and the game is an intermediary for the world to develop. You may think I am crazy, but I think these worlds are absolutely as real as our physical environments - however, they depend on ourselves, they cannot exist outside of one's mind (they can only be copied, forked to others' minds), making them fully rely on our memory, and they have no physical form either - which makes them as isolated from the game as we want, but also won't translate into actually having a chat with Sans on how solid the backbone of my theory is, for instance.
    Oh well, I apologize for writing such a long comment, I just threw away all of my thoughts subconciously (I'm tired, it's midnight here, right now). Don't take it too seriously - if you don't like it, just go away, this is just some weird metaphysical stuff, and we all know metaphysical stuff is dumb. If you do, however, I'm glad I gave you a new perspective on this subject.

    OMG! Stap the music, this was the music that made me cry in-game, OH GAWD Here they come....
    Undertale was one of the greatest games Ive ever played, the story is rich, the music is awesome,and you become so connected with this game its hard to not like it. Being connected with the characters is one thing, but you FEEL for them, you feel like you know them and its such an emotional journey, that you never want it to end. But when it does, it doesn't. It goes on in our hearts the feelings, the, just EVERYTHING. The game only ends when we want it to. Thank you Toby for making this game. Its been a long journey come to an end, but the journey itself, was amazing.

    You become so attached to that world and characters that you want to know everything about them. Wish you could speak to them and get to know them or at least share another adventure. You long and crave for anything more because you care so much. It makes have mixed feelings of happy and depressed. Happy to think back to those silly moments and characters. Depressed because I miss it and wish I can continue it in some way I did not before.
    All I can do now is share that with others and live vicariously through them...

    I'm like that too. Especially with games I've loved. But technically speaking, we do know how their lives go... at least, through other's imaginations. All the fanart, all the comics, all the videos of different game series that people love, and stories that continue the plot, even if it's not official, still gives us more fun times with the characters we love.
    And not just everyone else, but we ourselves can make our own stories. The freedom to imagine and put that thought on paper or video for others to see is something I love about media as a whole.
    ...I know I'm rambling, but you get the point. Even when the story's over, it's never truly over.

    I really wish Undertale dies peacefully. But that's not happening, obviously, it's going down the same cancer path as FNaF and Minecraft.

      Only about ~40-50% of UT's fanbase is bad. The other part/half isn't as bad as people make it to be (talented artists, remixes, fanfictions, legitimate theories, etc.) It most certainly isn't as bad as FNAF nor do I think it will ever reach that point

    Honestly, Undertale is one of the few games that I'll never forget. A lot of people will just forget about games after beating them. But for me, this game has a special place in my heart, and it's never leaving. I can happily say that this is one fandom that I call my home.

    Undertale was the first game I had played that made me cry multiple times from both sadness and joy and moved me so much I can't listen to His Theme without almost crying and while I am sad to have to leave the game behind in the true pacifist ending, I wouldn't want to tear the characters I love so much away from their happy ending as Flowey explains.

    Whenever games ended, I often think about the possibilities of what the inhabitants of the game world could be doing without me, despite their code ending as soon as the credits come to a close. I never really believed the idea that the world starts when I start the game, and the world ends when I quit the game. I always believed that the game world went on without me.
    Now I'm horribly sad because I think back to all the other adventures I had in the years I played video games. All those good and bad times. The nostalgia is real. ;-;
    (Also, subbed because I love your videos! The topics you talk about are very interesting :D)

    The end of the pacifist run made me cry. It was sadness (Asriel hugging frisk and leaving) and happiness (everyone got to the surface). I think that the thing that hit me the hardest was Asriel's music playing at the end, which reminded you that there was just one person you couldn't save.

    I'm scared with things like these, the thought of getting attached to an object that you make it an inspiration. Then would come a day that something new comes up and you forget it even though you wouldn't want to. I wouldn't want that to happen to a story, a game or a movie.

    This is close to what happened with me and Kingdom Hearts. I finished Kingdom Hearts 1 when I was 4 (I have NO idea how I can't even beat it now and I'm 14), and KH2 when I was 6, and then didn't play them again for 7 years (mostly because I couldn't find any copies of them and I lost mine). I had vague memories of the games, but it wasn't like other games. It wasn't "oh hey, I remember this cool thing I did in Mario when I was 4", it was more like something that actually happened to me, that I was trying to remember. I can't really explain it, but it's like no other game I've played. Except one. Undertale.

    I don't always think about what happens in the story after the game ends, but in most cases, I do. At least a passing thought crosses my mind, thinking about where the story may lead or what the next adventure could entail. I hope Toby makes more games. Not talking about Undertale sequels, but more games as in more fun adventures in perhaps another world that he pours his heart and soul into.

    When I played Undertale, I got so engrossed that when I finally got the true pacifist end, I couldn't bring myself to possibly try for another pathway. Instead, I go and check my save file every now and then, just to see the Underground empty, knowing that everyone is happy and enjoying themselves on the surface. Sappy, I guess...

    UT left a great impression on me. It was just one of those games that hit me good. I haven't played a game like this in a long time that me love all the characters. Toby did such a good job with how the music fits every mood and even hit me deep down. The thing is i leave behind most games that I beat and move on. But with Undertale I dont 'wanna do that. I wanna keep it in my heart forever

    I always thought I was the only one who felt this. But when you really think about it isnt life just like this? You meet hundreds of people through your entire life and alot of them you never even see again. Its a sad thought. All that time you spent with that person just gone. Your happy to have the memories you already have made but it still feels awful. The feeling of letting go and moveing on yourself.

    I got an interesting feeling finishing Phantom Pain. That game went on so long, and I spent so much time gathering resources and building up Mother Base, but when I was getting toward the end, I knew that gathering resources didn't matter anymore.
    This video reminds me of something Michael said once on Vsauce: When a game or a movie ends, characters can walk off into the sunset and the credits will roll, but in real life, after you walk into the sunset, you have to go home.

    I actually wrote a creative writing piece about this very topic back in high school. As you would probably expect, it was about a kid getting attached to characters in a game but then feeling alone when he finally beats it.
    I remember that whenever there was a character I really liked in a game I would always try to get as much dialogue out of them as possible, just to get that little bit more out of them

    The feeling is sad to give up fun on a game or in other words to leave the game behind. The depressing feeling can come to all of us, because we’ve experienced the game before, but the second experience ins’t the same. And to know the characters can feel happy or sad that we left them. To progress can feel good, but to end something is sad... except homework. This is the depressing feeling of playing a game and then you have to get to the part where you end it.

    I always feel really sort of empty when finishing a game, especially if it didn't end in a way that allowed full closure. The Portal games did this a fair amount because you never really know what Chell will do or find after becoming free. I loved Undertale for the same reasons you said here, and was really happy in the pacifist ending credits when you get to see what all the monsters do next. That's something games rarely do and you're not left wondering if the monsters even got accepted by other humans. But still, I took that walk you get to take to say goodbye to everyone, and it felt weirdly almost the same as I had every time I moved on from one school to the next growing up. All happy and proud yet nostalgic and a little sad. Damn games like that are good at bringing out emotions.

    When I played this, I had similar ideas. I saw the fandom do some amazingly creative, and sometimes amazingly cliché things with it. I was conflicted as hell about what to do with that, but at that point I did realize something.
    The fandom was keeping this little game alive, with a dose of passion I almost never saw before.
    Although I felt some of the stuff the fandom made was in risk of killing itself, I loved it to death and wanted to be part of it.
    These people gave these characters additions to their personality, making them even more "alive".
    I realize these characters can be seen as a part of all the people involved, and existing as much as we make them.
    They had personality traits that were amplified versions of things we would want or could relate to, in a sense completing us.
    I think since this is all part of multiple people, a game or a fictional thing may be considered even more real and living than some people at certain points. Doing a Mettaton impression in a let's play I did made me feel more alive than ever, and made me feel like I was that character. These characters are more unique than most actual people I've met.
    That it's fictional doesn't mean it's real. This stuff is a beautiful reflection of everything we want and are, and I think we should embrace it with all we have.

    Leaving RuneScape behind has been one of the most difficult things I have done. Almost every offline game stops as soon as you quit. Meanwhile, RuneScape is always being updated and changed in ways you don't expect. It feels like the game is moving on without you! ...Wait, there's a RuneScape 3? ****!
