Velvet Fog and Sassy both getting it from the Universe and giving it to us courtesy of TH-cam. Thank you from those of us who would otherwise NEVER get to see/hear this treasure.
No question that Sarah Vaughn is pure genius but I’m getting a sense from these comments that Mel was outclassed and I didn’t hear that at all. Musically he hung with her quite well. Her tone and range puts her at the top but Mel knew what to do. Just my opinion.
HOW TO SING TOGETHER MASTER CLASS RIGHT HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! In the moment, impromptu artistry at its BEST!!!! Sassy and The Velvet Fog two MASTER SCATTING icons.....imagin if Ella was there too?!?!?!?!
Its sad we seem to have lost artists like this- multitalented !jazzologists" who could just scat their way through a standard seamlessly. Both Sarah and Mel were decent pianists as well. And yes Mel was brilliant on drums too!!
I hadn't seen this before. Thanks for putting it up. Don't even hear Mel Torme anymore on the Radio. Sass is my all time favorite singer, so I listen to her daily. Mel was a great songwriter, singer and all around great human being.
Yes Mel patterned his scatting off of Ella's...but Ella was the best. Her scatting was the most inventive and varied. She had such a great ear for sound in general, and not just instruments. Mel's scatting may not have been original, but he learned from the best!
It seems this is from a Merv Griffin show. Mort Lindsey at the piano, Herb Ellis, Ray Brown, Richie Kamuca, Bill Watrous are part of the band here ... I can't recognize the drummer ... may be Nick Ceroli ? Jimmie Smith ? Around 1974 for sure ...
Excuse me!? Sarah was one of the great three jazz female vocalists. “Mel” may have been excited to share the stage with her honey. You have it twisted.
They're jivin together. A Jewish boy from Chicago and a black girl from New Jersey are creating some of the greatest music in history of humanity. Just enjoy the fuckin music. 🤷🏾♂️
Wow fantastic he was the best really underated pity frank sinatra did duet with Mel frank would of learnt from Mel Dont get me wrong Frank had a warm vouce and did great covers but Mel was a Musician always inventing and rephrasing Which might has been daunting for anyone duetting with him But Judy Garland managed it ? Oh well great to see he lives on in You Tube land Ive got his great stuff he did with Marty Paitch Dektet whos son was in Toto ? Thanks for posting
I will never not ever understand why Mel wasn't just as famous as Frank. And today, I cannot fathom why Bublè is more famous than Harry Connick Jr. who is head and shoulders better than Buble. IMO
Someone commented that Bublé has a voice like a kazoo, and it's true. Although he can be good, he discredits himself when he frequently uses autotune, which he doesn't need.
LOVE, LOVE, and LOVE the BEAUTIFUL SOUNDS of " OLD TIME GOSPEL" !!!!! Just think on " MY, CELL PHONE." Just think would never ever "DREAM" of SUCH when "I" was a little GIRL !!!!! "LOVE" The BEE GEE'S, ALSO !!!!!
Sarah, an untouchable talent and she got better with each year. Mel was sheer perfection. I love these jazz babies who had a language all their own. ❤
I had the privilege of knowing Mel Torme as a family friend. He was one of the nicest, most genuine people you could ever know.
Really? Wooooow. Did he ever talk about Ella Fitzgerald to yah? And such?
Lucky
Lucky you
can it get any better than this? Talent extraordinaire
Two legendary masters collaborated together! What a wonderful feast!
Velvet Fog and Sassy both getting it from the Universe and giving it to us courtesy of TH-cam. Thank you from those of us who would otherwise NEVER get to see/hear this treasure.
Two of the greatest at the top of their game. Does not get any better than this.
Torme sang with Ella and Sarah. magic.
I like Sarah, and Mel, two great jazz extraordinaires.
No question that Sarah Vaughn is pure genius but I’m getting a sense from these comments that Mel was outclassed and I didn’t hear that at all. Musically he hung with her quite well. Her tone and range puts her at the top but Mel knew what to do. Just my opinion.
ITV’s safe to say in any event tormented greates male scat singer ever with apologies to Kurt elling
You’re opinion is correct
A very accurate opinion
Yeah but Mel does the same licks every time, Sarah's was brand new improvised in the moment.
Wonderful
Fantabulous version of Lady Be Good.

I never knew that Mel could scat so well ! R.I.P.
Its sad we seem to have lost artists like this- multitalented !jazzologists" who could just scat their way through a standard seamlessly. Both Sarah and Mel were decent pianists as well. And yes Mel was brilliant on drums too!!
So appreciate your posting. Sarah and Mel, Jazz virtuoso vocalists. I will watch this unmatched performance over and over again!
I hadn't seen this before. Thanks for putting it up. Don't even hear Mel Torme anymore on the Radio. Sass is my all time favorite singer, so I listen to her daily. Mel was a great songwriter, singer and all around great human being.

Wow. The greatest. ..
Both amazing
Ooohhhhh..!! Me superencantannn..💗💗💗
Two legends having fun. Sassy's scat is very distinctive whereas Mel's scatting at times sounds a bit like Ella's. Just saying....
Mel Torme could always sing with the beat and behind it and was able to bend his voice within the song.
Mel Torme made no secret about where he got his scat chops from. You are absolutely right.
Yes Mel patterned his scatting off of Ella's...but Ella was the best. Her scatting was the most inventive and varied. She had such a great ear for sound in general, and not just instruments. Mel's scatting may not have been original, but he learned from the best!
Well Mr Mel Torme has always cited Ms Fitzgerald as his main influence for his scat singing.
I love to hear them scat and also Ella Fitzgerald
Beautiful and enjoyable. A language in its own
Mel Torme know he could scat. He was very underrated.
OMG! THIS WAS SO GOOD!

Too much goodness. Can't process it.

Sarah , mel and Ella ! Masterclass like Rafa , Novak and rodger !!
Sensacional!!!!!
👏👏👏👏👏
Whenever any singer sings with Sarah they always looks disapointed. Like she makes an amature out of the most amazing singers. She was the top level
Right!!!!! That part.....i don't think many understand what she just did!!!!!
They're jivin together.
A Jewish boy from Chicago and a black girl from New Jersey are creating some of the greatest music in history of humanity. Just enjoy the fuckin music. 🤷🏾♂️
Perfection
At 0:50 "Mexican Hat Dance" At 0:58 "Cool Breeze", at 1:06 "Swing On A Star",
Wow, Mel Tormé really did a good job! He did not mess her up, at all!!
You are not knowledgeable as to what Sarah just did. ......he knew better than that! !!!!! As if he could
At 2:12 Torme quotes "The Virgin Sturgeon Song" ("Virgin sturgeon need no urgin')
WOW!!!!
Ha!!!!! She is a genius. .....i wonder if he caught it
Ella said" sarah know's what she is doing. Enough said

When two gods meet
One word : 2 monsters !
They had her mic turned lower than his so that he came out stronger. Typical in those days...
I agree......but her genius was unapproachable! !!!!!! Evenstill!!!!!
The two preeminent scat singers at the top of their game, making a complete mockery of Pop music
Mel was a musician!
Mel to good
Mel Torme needs to stay in his lane...and out of Sarah's.
He was trying so hard. ....she at the playground playing
I will never not ever understand why Mel wasn't just as famous as Frank. And today, I cannot fathom why Bublè is more famous than Harry Connick Jr. who is head and shoulders better than Buble. IMO

@@fredbloggs6080 yes, it is kind of "hummy". I just like Mel's carmelly smoothness better.
