Mel Torme on his amazing career!

  • One of my favorite people: Mel Torme, "The Velvet Fog" (which he hates). At age 63 in 1988, he is still going strong and talks about his childhood, Chicago radio, his romantic life, his parents, and so much more.
Mel's books include The Other Side of the Rainbow (1970), a memoir of his time as musical adviser for Judy Garland's television show; Traps, the Drum Wonder (1991), a biography of Buddy Rich; My Singing Teachers: Reflections on Singing Popular Music (1994); Wynner (1978) a novel; and It Wasn't All Velvet (1988), his autobiography.
Tormé wrote more than 250 songs, several of which became standards. He often wrote the arrangements for the songs he sang. He collaborated with Bob Wells on his most popular composition, "The Christmas Song" (1946), which was recorded first by Nat King Cole. Tormé said that he wrote the music in 45 minutes, and that it was not one of his favorites, calling it "my annuity". He died in 1999 at the young age of 73, after his second stroke.

My all time favorite singer. I actually preformed his life story at the smith center in Las Vegas in 2017 with my dear friend Mr Frank Laspina and his daughter Angie who sang several duets with me. Plus ‘ my son Vince Mastro Jr. Played drums. What more could I ask for. Mel was the most musical singer I ever heard. I love singing his songs. What an influential preformer he is to me even now. He helped shape my vocals to this day. Thank you Mr Mel Torme’ where ever you are. And the Angels sing.

Listen to how articulate Mel was. No celebrity, singer or movie star could hold a candle to his level of discourse. Very entertaining, thank you for this!

Jerry Sharell, KJAZZ Radio LA. 10/6/2020. Every song Mel Torme sang was a vocal lesson presented by the only man/only boy singer who "sang his sox off" and had no equal! He practically owned every ballad he sang and when it came to an up-tune at a "ridiculous tempo" and many chorus' of skatting he almost dared anyone else to top him! There will always be the one and only Mel Torme!

Out of all the people he mentioned at the end, he was perhaps more talented than all of them.

Thank you, Eileen. I created a Facebook page for him. It is Mel Torme ~ Smooth As Velvet. Turns out there was an album titled that. I stayed away from ''The Velvet Fog" title, he disliked that. I managed to get "velvet" in nicely though. Lol Have a great day! Bud Oh, come join the page. Love to have you.

    He only got better.
His range only grew and he grew so much as a singer and a person.
There was such a beautiful depth to his voice and his character held true throughout his life. His son exemplifies his legacy and it's so wonderful to see him hold court with anyone. As much as I love Sinatra, Davis, Hartman and just about anyone, I've never heard anyone sing like Mel Torme. He really broke the mold and made this world a beautiful place for everyone around him.
The greatest jazz balladeer in the world. Check it out.

Eileen, thank you so much for posting this interview. I've been a fan of Mel Torme since my teens (I'm 68). An incredibly talented man. If you have never heard his rendition of the standard "That's All", I encourage you to check it out. A lovely song made that much more beautiful with his voice. How wonderful that we have youtube to bring these amazing performances to young people who weren't around at the time and to the not so young who want to relive them.

I played piano for him in the early '80s. We had a musical disagreement and I did not find him to be the "nice guy" you see in this interview. However, I must say he was an incredible vocalist, arranger and musician. We won't see talent like him again!!

Was he rude to you while disagreeing or was he just disagreeing with you with no bad intentions. Crazy he seemed like a nice guy in the interview

like it or not, and tho' it may not be liked by him, the velvet fog befits even his speaking voice. he's a genius of the voice. catch him in seinfeld; great. too young to go

What a great interview. I was born in 1953, and was a Beatles fan and such, and Mel was a guy I'd see on Carson occasionally with people like Buddy Hackett or Don Rickles. I really didn't appreciate him until recently, but I HAVE been a fan of Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin. But what a great interview here. Seems like a great guy who cares about people.
