Now it's always once upon a time, in New York City
It's a big old, bad old, tough old town, it's true
    But beginnings are contagious there
    They're always setting stages there
They're always turning pages there for you
Ain't it great the way it all begins in New York City
Right away, you're making time, and making friends
No one cares where you were yesterday
If they pick you out, you're on your way
To a once upon a time that never ends
    So Oliver, don't be shy
Get out there and go and try
    Believin' that you're the guy
    They're dying to see
    'Cause a dream's no crime
    Not once upon a time
Once upon a time in New York City
If it's always once upon a time in New York City
Why does nightfall find you feeling so alone
How could any one stay starry-eyed
When it's raining cats and dogs outside
And the rain has said "now you're on your own"
    So Oliver don't be scared
    Though yesterday no one cared
    They're getting your place prepared
    Where you want to be
    Keep your dream alive
Dreaming is still how the strong survive
Once upon a time in New York City
    Keep your dream alive
Dreaming is still how the strong survive
Once upon a time in New York City
    Keep your dream alive
Dreaming is still how the strong survive
Once upon a time in New York City
And it's always once upon a time, in New York City

There'd also be the original presented characters of following DC including Kiteman as the rising villain of this spin-off. wether I'm the hero in this spin-off with the help of Dr. Fate, like in Marvel's Dr. Strange if both Dr.s are into dimension travel.

I thank goodness for that. He had enough money to give my sister and I Oliver And Company. There’s so much in these words that isn’t just about the subject. It’s about the kids that grew up with it. I was able to go to New York in Manhattan island. Don’t think for one second I wasn’t thinking about where I came from. Thank goodness for my father. Thank goodness for my mom. I shed tears when I hear this song. The reason is because NYC is just not the way it was anymore. It is not safe: violent crime has become rampant and the subways are dangerous again. To me, it really is a “once upon a time.” However, I remain hopeful Eric Adams will turn things around, and I actually want to make a difference in trying to help the city get back to the way it was pre-Covid-19. We must “keep the dream alive!”

I'd love to know how Howard Ashman and Barry Mann ended up collaborating. Ashman was a massive fan of the 1960s classic pop/rock songs of Barry Mann with lyrics by his wife Cynthia Weil (his Little Shop of Horrors score references their hits like Uptown), so I'm not surprised that he'd want to work with Mann... And they're a great fit. Mann/Weil by this time had become successful adult contemporary songwriters but ironically, just a year or two before, had written all of the songs for rival studio Bluth/Spielberg's An American Tail (including the massive hit, Somewhere Out There).

    • @TheCapedWanderer
      @TheCapedWanderer ปีที่แล้ว +1

What I wanna know is if Howard had any direction for who/how to sing this. Did he request Huey, or did they just put ads out in the local rag? I’d love to hear the two of them chat about NYC and the feeling of the song.

    • @EricMontreal22
      @EricMontreal22 ปีที่แล้ว

@@TheCapedWanderer I have no doubt that Ashman was at the recording session and did give Huey direction--unless for some reason he wasn't allowed to be, he always wanted to be as involved in the recording as possible. For that matter, Barry Mann liked to be as well-- I know the soundtrack in general tried to get a lot of then current pop stars (Billy Joel as Dodger being the obvious example but Midler, Pointer Sisters...) so Huey was a natural fit, but I suspect that may have been more corporate (or the directors) decision than either Ashman or Mann. But on the other hand, I wouldn't *be* surprised if it was one of their choices (Barry Mann in the 80s was still working with current chart stars)
And yes, I'd love to hear them chat about the feel and background of the song. Anything honestly.
*edit* no idea why part of this is crossed out lol*

This song made me cry for two reasons.
    1) I am a New Yorker (though I live in Texas now). I bawled because this is the New York I remember. Not this Democrat shithole that has been overturned by crime, drugs, and Covid. I still remember walking in Manhattan with my grandfather in August 2001, literally days before 9/11.
    2) This brought back flashbacks of my own personal struggles in life. Won’t go into details here, but it makes me really realize how far I have come in life.
