I always thought of this as a fitting song for a group of orphan kittens sitting in a small box, waiting to be adopted, hoping that the next person who walks by will choose them.
I always thought this song was amazingly sad for an opening, but hearing the lyrics of the first part, it actually has a nice message to it. Then it gets kinda sad, but not as sad as I had assumed it was.
This song is so true about the city and is literally the reason why I want to live there one day. Seriously though “Dreaming is still how the strong survive” is just so inspiring!
@@camerontroutman1605 Looking for a job, maintaining friendships, the covid pandemic, making get together plans and illness or surgery recovery all in a nutshell.
Five months ago, at work, we found a skeletal 3 week old kitten under the dumpster. We spent three days feeding him, and trying to make him trust us enough. We finally grabbed him. Got his shots, flea treated, neutered and tagged. He's now approaching six months, and our warehouse cat. He has 4 moms and four dads, and everyone looks out for him. This song starts in my head whenever I play with him.
A lot of people say this is a sad song but it's not it's a hopeful one. I can see why people think that because the beginning of the movie is tragic; a kitten lost on the streets of New York, but that's not the point. I loved this song as a kid because it meant your beginnings may not be happy but you have the power to change that. The movie has this message too. It's not saying happiness is something you are given its something you need to find on your own, and Oliver does that, he finds a family. It's about not giving in to hardship and not letting the world turn you sour. You need to keep your dreams alive because dreaming is how the strong survive.
This song kinda reminds me of starting high school as a freshman, new environment, new beginning, then you suddenly realize it’s not the place everyone has hyped it up to be, though it’s hard and unforgiving to a degree, you gotta keep your head up and look ahead to what’s gonna come in the future.
Yeah I remember that. I haven't seen this movie in17+ years. But for some reason that scene is the only one i remember vividly. Curse you Disney lol jk
I honestly love this so much it gives me real old vibes when I was just a kid I mean I’m still but really old and nostalgic vibes which I miss And this song is always gonna be a greatest vibe ❤️
When last I looked, Oliver Twist (which this is based off) is one of the most bittersweet yet saddest books that has ever been written. So yeah, people shouldn't be surprised that opening to Oliver and Company was like that (in a way).
Great intro song and scene for a movie. At first I was hesitant to watch cause I heard it was Disneys weakest movie, but after watching that opening scene I was hooked and had to watch the whole thing.
I remember when i was 10years old I watched this movie before and it touched me so hard ,I cried that time coz I know the feeling of no one wants you to be with.
I remember when I was a little kid I used to watch this movie all the time and after 5 years I’ve finally seen it again and now I can’t stop watching it
I had a stuffed orange cat rattle and named it Oliver (because I also love the movie and it had the same color as him too) and this song just makes me miss my childhood memories even more. I'm crying too.
SudokuBrony yep the best 😊 I loved the movie when I first watched it two days ago on Disney plus and I didn’t know this song is talking about Oliver and his loneliness until now
People seem to mainly remember 'Why Should I Worry' which is still great but any song that gets an emotional response as early into a film as this one did really deserves celebration
I'm from other country and not I live in New York. I love this place. Love the ppl, the environment no matter how harsh or kind. Its everything. its a feeling that you feel like you belong. I'm loving it every single minute and second. its bittersweet but overall, its the love i have for this city.
Considering how many Disney things happen in NYC, I'm tempted to make an AMV of this song, using Enchanted, Gargoyles, American Dragon, The Rhapsody in Blue part of Fantasia 2000, Paperman, Muppets Take Manhattan, Certain episodes of Once Upon A Time, Avengers, The end of James and the Giant Peach, the beginning of both Rescuers movies, and of course, Oliver and Company.
My sister recently adopted a rescue kitten that looks almost exactly like Oliver- his name is Starfire (yes, Teen Titans), she first thought it was a girl but the name stuck
I used to hate this song at the beginning of the movie because I thought it was slow and boring. Now I understand what it means. Whenever I'm really sad, this song is like a lifeline to me.
Every time I hear this song all I can think about is the box of kitties this song was the best song from Oliver and Company there are 3 songs I love from this soundtrack 1. Once upon a time in New York City 2. Why should I worry 3.Streets of Gold
Mike Melvyn I love all those songs too. What's sad though is you don't hear many people sing them these days. These days do you hear anyone sing "Keep your dream alive, dreaming is still how the strong survive" or "Why should I worry? Why should I care"? No! Instead you hear "Do you wanna build a snowman? I wanna ride a bike around the hall" (I can't remember for sure, but I don't care enough about that song to check) or "Let it go! Let it goooo!" Seriously, people! WHAT THE HECK?!?
Me gusta la canción. Simplemente es una expresión artística que nos ayuda a encontrarnos a nosotros mismos de alguna manera, dándonos cuenta de nuestros temores para superarlos. Me gustan los gatitos. I enjoy this song. Merely it is a artistic expression which helps us for finding to ourselves of somehow, meanwhile we realize about our fears for to work it out. I adore the kittens.
I now have this movie on Blue-ray I forgot all these years later Hunchback and Oliver and Company always made me want to cry. Hunchback is obvious that is something Stephen Schwartz had his hands in the music. But this movie... oh I'm 20 and still cry with this movie. But I love it though.
I turn 30 in Jan. I swear I just had the realization that this is the best song ever. I want to do a cover on this song but too afraid to sing in front of people. How can I gain the courage/love to sing in any environment?
Hello! I know this comment is a bit aged, but I hope you see this response: You need to learn to absorb a crowd's energy instead of being struck by it. I've been narrating school plays and doing public speaking for the church I attend since I was in 6th grade, in 1996. In all honesty, I'm only nervous about public speaking or performing BEFORE I'm up on a stage or dais. Once the mic is in front of me, everything changes. People are there to hear me, and rather than get nervous, I get completely excited. In a not-so-serious way, I hype myself up by telling myself "I'm up on stage above the peasant class! I am the regal one, here to entertain the masses and ease their suffering, if only for a brief time." Especially for such a beautiful song as this, don't simply give them a song, give them a PERFORMANCE straight from your heart and soul. Jitters and nerves are fine, even Laurence Olivier, one of the greatest stage actors of all time got stage freight. In fact, his was so bad that he would yell and scream at other actors to not look him in the eye during a performance. Eye contact made him think of the audience and that they were judging him, consequently, that paranoia is what drove him to his excellence. So don't be afraid of fear. Be afraid of not sharing your feelings with the world. And believe me, this world is in dire need of reminders that our emotions are one of our most-precious possessions. Godspeed to you.

That one line got me through some really shitty times as a child, as a teen and even now as an adult. My eyes well up every time I hear it 🙂
So much better than any line from Let It Go!
Same here
God, seriously...
Say line what words think no talk I cat he dead u say bubbles spider man
Just damn. It’s funny how differently we hear these songs are from when we where kids. So many emotions
We pick up experiences in life that give these old songs so much more context to connect with.
I honestly feel like this song captures NYC at its core
It really does.

Yea I know what you mean
Yeah, Oliver becomes a hero and finds a home
The classic Disney will live forever.
This song is so true about the city and is literally the reason why I want to live there one day. Seriously though “Dreaming is still how the strong survive” is just so inspiring!
I always wanted to cry when this song played
I'm not even sad and I want to cry, why does that song have that effect?
I think it's the singer and the tune to the song.
You might be right there! Because I cried to this song!
I still shed a couple tears when this song is played
This song can make you cry
I have always loved this song...all of us just wanna be loved...and cared about and for...thats all
"Oh Oliver dont be scared, though yesterday no one cared, they're getting your place prepared, where you wanna be!"
“Keep your dream alive, dreamin’ and still how the strong survive.
Once upon a time, in New York City!”

It also made Oliver one tough kitten that cat took out a big fat dude Oliver was a bad ass cat on those streets.
everybody wants to be a cat~
This sequence always made me cry, and it is literally the beginning of the film 😂
Megan Taylor When the opening does that, you know you got a good movie. Truly underrated for its time.
@artbytesia this movie actually saved Disney at the time
such an amazing song, always get the feeling of wanting to fly whenever I hear this song away.

Always cried in the begining in Oliver...Still get the feels...
' dreaming is still the strong survive ' so true. Edit; dreamers have many success
This song gets me every time. This is my least favorite part of the movie, it's the most traumatic part for me.
I remember when i was 10years old I watched this movie before and it touched me so hard ,I cried that time coz I know the feeling of no one wants you to be with.
“Keep your dream alive, dreaming is how the strong survive.” I remember being three years old & taking this verse to heart all through my life.
"And the rain is saying now you're on your own" 😭😭😭😭😭
That line always gets me 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

Tara Turner I feel you me too 🙁

One of my childhood favourites ❤️
I remember when I was a little kid I used to watch this movie all the time and after 5 years I’ve finally seen it again and now I can’t stop watching it
Huey Lewis defined the 80's for me. Howard Ashman has been a lifelong inspiration to me.
I named my cat after Oliver (cause i love the movie and he looked like him too) and this song just makes me miss him even more, I'm crying😭💔

Same. I learned how to play this song on the piano and used to play it for him. I'm sorry about your kitty. 🥺
Your kitty loves you too
All these times I’ve heard this song, and I never knew Huey Lewis sung it. Now I love it even more.

I feel like most movies are set in New York or somewhere similar.

Oliver and Company is the reason why I wanted to listen to this catchy and heartwarming song.
Now this song is always bittersweet to me ‘cause it reminds me now of September 11…especially with the opening with the towers 😞

Because he was the only character on the screen at that exact frame
Love this song
Because of this movie I named my orange tabby Oliver ❤
This song reminds me of the Twin Towers as well as the box of kittens

this song makes me want to name my son Oliver so I can sing it to him while he grows up 🙂
Good Show, Cheerio You both lived in New York City?
Cameron Troutman it would be pretty easy to swap out New York with any other city name considering the end of the line is city.
That’s neat
Aaawwwww... that’s soooooo cute.
This is why I never want to watch Oliver and Company 😂 cause that intro makes me cry so much but it's too good to skip
Has anyone noticed that the lyrics HAS Oliver in there, and the movie is called ‘OLIVER and Company’?? Happy irony I’d say~
How do I find this song on iTunes?
I bealive that about new york
