It is insane to think that we had Hogan and Warrior - two guys that couldn't work to save their lives - to, only a couple years later, probably the 2 best workers of all time in Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels replacing them. It was like going from 0-60 in less than 1 second. Wild.
The crazy thing is that Hogan could work. When WWF did that show in the Egg Dome in Japan, he showed an actual moveset. Apparently he wasn't supposed to show that side in the states.
I was lucky enough to be a kid during the early 90's. I was a mssive Ultimate Warrior fan. Then Brett Hart brcame my favorite....but nothing will compare to the Attitude Era and Stone Cold Steve Austin. That was a special time that will never happen again.
The Rock surpassed Austin by 1999 though. It’s so easy in hindsight to say Austin was the bigger star bc he was always in the main events and was protected better. But Rock actually outsold Austin in merchandise that year and his segments generally got more views. Austin was the biggest star first by 97 and 98 but Rock surpassed him between 99 to 02
@@deemz312 nope it’s true, Rock was already rivaling Austin in popularity in late 98 which is likely why they switched him heel. But bc he was so entertaining they had to turn him back face. When 1999 came to a close, Rock was their biggest merch mover specifically with his sunglasses. Not Austin. Austin was number 2. Even when you check the ratings that year in 99, Rock beat Austin most weeks. Of course their were also times Austin beat Rock. They even tied several times. But most weeks, The Rock got the most views during his segments.
The main reason Warrior failed so miserably in the early 90s, despite strong start, was the fact that he was pushed too much too fast. He simply wasn't ready for the spotlights as, despite his incredible gimmick and persona, all of his numerous flaws in the ring were becoming more and more apparent.
Not really. He got greedy. Shortly after Wrestlemania-6, Warrior demanded the same pay as Hogan. When Vince said no, Warrior refused to wrestle in their next PPV (match made in hell). Warrior did end up wrestling in the PPV, but after that, the Warrior started doing no-shows at events. Point is, Warrior caused his demise in the WWF. He could have had a longer run, but he got greedy and selfish.
What’s funny is the 5 guys on the thumbnail - I would have killed for a HBK/Rock match, Bret/Rock, and more HBK/Bret or even a Steve/Hulk or more HBK/Steve matches
I used to have a poster of the Undertaker on my wall as a kid, but my mom would have to turn it around at night because he scared the shit out of me. I wish I still had that poster.
Looking back with 2020ish-hindsight, people like to shit on the Undertaker/Giant Gonzalez feud, but at the time, it was the most awesome sight to behold. As fans, we didn't care about star-ratings and flippy-do athletics. Prior to Giant Gonzalez's debut, we were used to seeing Undertaker look strong with EVERY feud. He was never at a disadvantage. When Gonzalez entered the ring at the Royal Rumble, it was scary seeing somebody a foot taller than Undertaker looking down at him, and then effortlessly toss Undertaker around like a ragdoll. While inept at a lot of the basics, Gonzalez was perfect for what he was.

One could accurately compare the WWF during the 1990s to a sports franchise. 1990 and 1991 were the peak of a dynasty, with the team cruising to championships behind star power. In 1992, the team wins again, but the clouds are on the horizon as many players are leaving in free agency. 1993 would have been the year the team squeaks into the playoffs, but gets knocked out in the first round. 1994, the team finishes .500, barely misses the playoffs, and the team cuts costs and dead weight. 1995 was the year the team tanked and finished last place to get high draft picks. 1996 was the year the new draft picks developed, yet the team still sucked and missed the playoffs. Despite this, the fans are hopeful for the future as the new arrivals showcase their talent and skill-sets. 1997 was the year the new talent continued to develop, helping the team improve yet barely still miss the playoffs. 1998 would have been the year the team returned to the playoffs after a strong finish, but got beat in the championship game. And 1999 was the year they won it all again.

I dont think Vince had learned how to handle and groom a new star properly, Warrior was given too much too fast, the belt was put on him too soon, and I also feel like they weren't fair with Warrior on what they expected him to be able to draw. I think a lot of that had to do with poor story lines and poor booking and Warrior should have been sent to a proper camp and different expectations should have been placed on him.....and Jim just needed a lot of therapy. I still think he's a very misunderstood guy who just suffered from some pretty serious mental disorders and identity issues, and during an era when even acknowledging such things, let alone seeking or accepting help for them, was seriously stigmatized.
