I'm from Brazil. The Shark was launched here on October 19th. Only one version (the top - GS) at US$ 67 thousand. High price due to the government tax on imported cars (35%), but at the same price as the best Hilux version and 10% higher than the Ranger 3.0 V6 Limited Plus. I just bought one and expect to receive it in 4 weeks. High expectations for this pickup.
I say this an an EV owner: shoulda bought a hilux. Your new truck won’t be worth a bag of chips five years from now. Only lease EVs or buy the cheapest, entry level variant.

I bet on the Shark HEV and so far, with about 4 thousand km driven, I confess that it is exceeding expectations. Until the end of December, less than 500 units had been sold. The main reason in my opinion has been the high price.

This beast is so beautiful andpowerfull. It sells AU$57, around US$38k. The basiic model is much better than the Ford or Hilux luxury model, and it give you more power but more efficient, longer warranty, truly amazing.
I have ordered one and plan to convert the back into a camping kitchen with a fridge, oven, and electric stove. Since it can use petrol to recharge the battery, so it can literally supply endless electricity for camping and emergency household power supply

A Corolla in China costs 12,000 US dollars. A Tesla Model 3 in China is less than 30,000 US dollars and comes with five-year interest-free. From this, you can see what kind of expensive and crappy junk you all buy in the United States.
Yet those two that you mentioned, still are dropping on sales number, which makes you realize how a highly competitive market could actually benefits consumers. Mercedes, BMW, Audi, even Porsche, Maserati, Maybach, etc etc, all have been either pushing discounts or lowering prices for their sales in the Chinese market, which you could rarely see in any other.
When Terry talked about the suspension in a pickup truck, he showed he really knows his stuff. An Aussie reviewer has a video where he actually loaded 300 Kg of wood in the bed and he said it became a VERY soft, very comfortable suspension. I have followed this truck since his world launch at Mexico, a first for any BYD product. I have seen dozens of videos from reviewers at Mexico, Australia and other countries. Never disappoints (just the uninformed reviewers). Also, please note this a hybrid but not the type of hybrid from the last few years: This one is electric first and most of the time you will not need/use the combustion engine to add power to the front wheels. Nissan has used this type of tech for several years now, not in the US. This hybrid type of technology is the future of electrified mobility: best performance, lowest emissions and longest range. Another thing to have in mind is the target buyers. The BYD Shark is a pickup truck very capable and with great performance. However, it will not tow more than 2.5T. It's simply not for heavy (HEAVY, HEAVY) duty. I would not be afraid of it "falling apart" (that's a ridiculous thought). I would definitely buy it.
How come the "heavy" tailgate is an issue? Surely if you are a tradesman using it for work lugging tools and materials the tailgate is the least of your worries.
BYD already build EV buses in the US creating US jobs but US government still want BYD out of US completely. Sorry but the US is in full self denial mode atm.

i'm not a truck guy, but this truck is good looking, fast and fuel efficient PHEV, quiet, well-made, well rust proofed, beefy suspension. and substantially cheaper than comparable trucks. they won't be able to keep this in stock.
These two guys skipped over the most important thing - its DMO hybrid system, which will revolutionize the experience of pickup trucks in the past. It's efficient, green, quiet and practical. It's completely different from Toyota's THS hybrid system. These two guys keep saying this is cheap, that is a copy.. yesh, keep sleeping and the Chinese cars will take over the market share of US legacy autos
Western brands are unable to compete in china because they just rely on government protectionism and Monetary Easing. While chinese car manafacturers were transitioning to EVs western brands were just making small incrimental changes and raising prices. That is why Startbucks is loosing to Luckin and why western auto manufactures lost to Chinese. They are unable to compete/adapt in the largest conusmer market in the world.
I bought one - It runs 100 km with battery - I am not using any Gas anymore, because I do not run 100+ km a day, city usages -I used to have a Ford Bronco Sport 2023 and change for BYD Shark big difference -Best purchase so far -Mexico price 45k USD -Mexico price for 1 kw = 1 peso (0.05 usd) -It has 30kw of battery and use 20k for EV mode then the petrol engine starts running -Always use the 2 electric motors, the petrol Engine is a generator I bought because I need a pickup and do not want to spend more in petrol I meet those 2 criteria, the other are a plus.

I agree with you 100%. But then, I'm an Aussie who's got one on order - and we lost our car industry some years back regretfully, so we will now take on anything. With what we know now, this was absolutely the correct course - we could never had withstood this flood of quality Chinese cars. I already drive a Tank300 petrol version 4x4, which is rock solid. You say you want one, and competition is awesome - are yo'll prepared for the job losses that will follow? There's a price to pay domestically to allow this choice that you want. But to do anything else will mean falling behind. Any Tesla we buy in Oz is made in China - you don't seem to hear about that, as much.

What disapoints me is that most "established" TH-cam car reviewers are extremely biased and would constantly rave on about 2.5 ton towing capacity and ignore all and the rest of it's awesomeness.. I unsubscribed to them..there were only a few unbiased genuine car reviewers that tells it as it is..the rest are just sheep and have no balls.
I think things like the hook on the rear seat are great. Use something that works well without paying for something more expensive that you only use every once in a while. Save complexity/money to give people a lower price point and people will be fine if it doesn't have certain features because....THEY ARE SAVING MONEY. Sure, some people will critcize it... because their ego needs to make an excuse for why they paid more for the car/truck they bought that has the fancy/not needed items. Utility beats fancy...especially now that cars have gotten very expensive.
And it saves buyers money, for a non critical, temporary use feature it's good to be so raw so less likely to be faulty. I'd hate holding some button for 10 seconds just to get my backseats reels up to grab something and then another 10 seconds to shut it...(car manufactures do keep those electric motions slow for safety reasons)
A New Zealander tested it and said the same about the ride. Then he threw some firewood in the back and it improved by miles. For us that are buying it with a canopy, just that weight will already make a big difference. My last 3 work 4WD's were all Ford Rangers. Including all the previous ones, empty..ALL of them were horrible in suspension, until you added some weight in the back.

About the reason BYD does not sell Sharks in China: According to Chinese law: pickup trucks are classified as freight vehicles - trucks. 1. Due to China's rapid urbanization, some large cities have imposed certain restrictions on trucks entering the city. 2. The law stipulates that trucks must be scrapped after 15 years of operation. As long as cars pass the inspection every year, they can continue to be used. 3. The law stipulates that the speed limit on highways is 120km/h for cars and 100km/h for trucks. 4. Farmers will buy agricultural trucks. There are many specialized manufacturers in China that manufacture such vehicles, and the general selling price is less than $10,000.
I went to a BYD dealer in Australia this week and check it out. Didn't get a test drive so this review was very helpful. Cost wise though the shark at $60k is more than $40,000 cheaper than the Ford Raptor. Runs on half of the fuel and is only serviced every 20,000 klms. Fixed cost servicing $275, 275, 575, 275, etc right out to 160,000 klms when the warranty runs out. This truck may not be perfect yet but tradies are going to eat these up on cost alone.
Tradies wont buy these pieces of junk. Most reviews we've seen so far have been sponsored and talked up like its amazing. The reality is its just another cheap chinese product that'll fail miserably

Personally I don't think it's bad for just a Knockaround truck. All you need is to get you from point A to point B. There's some things that they have to improve on it but I think they got this down. People going to say what they to say about it but I think it's a pretty good truck.
Very cool. The US auto makers need to "benchmark" this and get that to me ASAP. The truck market is just not doing it for me anymore with those huge, expensive, unwieldy behemoths as the only high-quality options available.
If this car is kept out of us market by tariffs, then the legacy manufacturers here will have no incentive to match and compete with this. It’s just simple economics, why improve when they can get away with chugging overpriced products down your throat

That was a fairly well positioned and cheap vehicle initially. Then Ford started increasing the MSRP, while dealers added their ridiculous fees on top. I guess my point is the automakers don't need tariffs to gouge their customers....LOL

I absolutely love these concept for a phev. I can’t get my head around why this isn’t used on vans. Not only would it solve the payload problem of 3,5tonns (in Europe at last) it would make the best campers imagine a hybrid system and a Isabelle battery that size not only to drive but for appliances

Price for this in Australia is US $36900, this is for the premium model, with other version to follow, lets see if this even makes it to the US and with tariffs will cost a LOT more
I think BYD can't buy Chrysler. The US government will certainly block it. And if the government can't block it and then BYD really bought Chrysler, BYD must face opposition/hates from American car lovers and conservatives.
Definitely interesting in many respects. The suspension layout with the double A arms and split double lower arms in the rear is also something ive not seen before anywhere much less a truck. The front cabin is also pretty nice, build quality and materials look good. The bottom two spokes on the steering wheel are also open with control wheels on each spoke at the bottom part of the rim of the wheel, again another unique design I've not seen before. Overall some interesting ideas at play here and maybe not all of them are a homerun but they are at least trying things others haven't done before and the consumer reception and maybe more important how well some of these hold up over time will determine if they were executed successfully or not.

No. It offers direct drive to the front wheels at speeds above 70km (depending on mode) - where the ICe is ruuning at it's most efficient. Also don't forget ICE kw power direct to motors... Everyone talks about battery charge re the ICE but not the the other two.
I think this pick up must have come up from Mexico, and I agree, lots of times even I could have given them a hand in quite basic stuff. Terry seemed more on to it.
Not a parallel hybrid, but partial only. ICE connects via geared clutchpack to front diff (via countershaft) at 75 km/hr, or around 40 mph. Usually parallel hybrids have a planetary sun type of transmission. BYD DMO manages power flow via clutched gearsets which seem robust and simple.
This seems like two dads chatting about a car and doing a review. I like the format. Not a salesperson selling a product. They find the negatives and point them out, as minor as they might be. Good review.
As I understand it the motor only comes on if you get to 20% or 25% battery. Even in HEV. You can set it to 70% so that you keep battery relatively full if say you need it for camping or tools on site. Hard to tell if motor actually came on in this vid when he said it was quiet.
0-60 5.7 seconds, if daily drive range is less than 60miles, your gas bill will be less than 500$ yr and electrify bill around $500 too. Name a truck can do that

The reason it is getting such rave reviews in NZ is that it can run on electrons for over 80ks as well, and can power several power tools at the same time. It has already been tested here by 'eccentricity' by good old Gavin, always funny.

With the back seat and the cushion raised there are stickers there saying do not stow anything here. Yes of course you can put stuff on the seats but not stuff on top of the battery itself. In Australia we found the cables, tow ball and tongue in velcroed bags behind the rear seat upright cushion. I have a white one ordered for Jan 2025 delivery Melbourne Australia.
If they produce it here to avoid tariffs this will be a best seller mid size trucks not cause of brand name but prices and the regular joe can afford it I want more brands to come to the US as the current ones are scamming us with these prices.

Yes, a negative bias before even getting in was evident. If they do that with all the vehicles, then that is fine. It simply means that they evaluate from a more critical standpoint. I haven't seen any of their other evaluation to make that call.
I was very disappointed in his attitude as well, as I have been a subscriber to the channel for years. I thought that, as they have had the Lightning etc in the States for some time, they must have an existing bench mark they were judging it against. I have a diesel Ranger at the moment, it cannot get anywhere near 5.7. Still subscribed, still think the channel is good --from NZ.
I don’t think these guys understand the drivetrain… they described it as parallel hybrid ( with the front wheels powered by petrol and the rear powered by electric). Every other review has described it as a serial hybrid ( gas generator recharging the battery)
This is painfully like watching two old blokes use a computer or mobile phone for the first time... That looks like a pre-production model, I'm sure the others I've seen are better finished under the back seats. it won't start the engine until it gets down to the set battery %
Here from Australia. Thanks a lot for A Very insightful, in-depth and spot-on review. It was launched last week here. I've done some research on the SUV version of the Shark which was released more than 1 year ago in China. The ride quality indeed is not up to scratch much based on the owners’ feedback, which is the main issue they've found. However, the design of the interior and exterior is much more attractive, personal opinion. The holes in the frame are reduce the body weight without undermining the strength of the frame.
3:50 the Truck could use more refinement, but remember how Lutz would challenge engineers to cut out things that the customer doesn’t use or notice? (2nd Sun Visors) To build an affordable vehicle, OEMs need to challenge everything they’ve been doing for the past 25 years. I can live with cheap carpet under the rear seat - but it does need more Bed Tiedowns.
The drive layout is genius. There is no need for drive shafts about time some though out a truck drivetrain. The electric motor in the transmission is stupid for hybrid drive.
Lot of so call hybrid awd use this lay out. Toyota passenger viechle use something like this. But their designs are putting a very pitiful motor in the back. And all it does is helping improve stability. Integrating the motor to transmission is likely they are simply run out of space... This thing is packed

A lot of comments are looking at this vehicle as a full size pick up replacement and that not what it's intended for . In the Asian and Oceania markets this vehicle makes a lot more sense .The vast majority majority of users in these markets are purchasing Ford Ranger / Toyota Hilux size duel cab utes for family and recreational use .Fuel is also much more expensive than the USA . Full size US pickups are extremely expensive to purchase as they are RH drive converted in Australia which nearly triples their US price and they are simply too big for urban use over here .Rich bastards with enormous boats and caravans are the main users of big US pick ups .Most commercial users will have small trucks instead or A Toyota Landcruiser tray back. Most imported vehicles in Australia usually end up with a local suspension tune developed thats incorporated at the factory at some point.
In any industries, they all do the same practice, trying to find the best practices in the industry and benchmarking them. The host reviewer is somewhat a sick sourgraper.
For a very comprehensive look at how the drive train works and this vehicle in general search something like Australian BYD Shark review L2SFBC several videos covering it in detail from a very experienced Aussie Auto Journalist. BTW this is not a Prius style drive train more like an Edison truck. The ICE motor only ever connects to one set of wheels in a very small speed range at highway speeds as it's a single speed gear box .90 % of the time, the engine only ever charges the battery and only sees a steady constant load at an optimum rpm .

Reading the manual it's faster in sports mode then HEV with the motor contributing to power via charge under 70km then clutch kicks in at 70 and motor assists mechanically in acceleration.
Shark is good for the drone service business. Instead of carrying two to three generators to charge drones' batteries, they can directly use the Shark to charge the batteries.
This review was very negativity critical. However, even though it was negative, this truck is a treat to all existing trucks in its category (that is why the high tariff (100%) is put on it) it would sell like hot pan cakes!
I'd love to be able to buy a series hybrid PHEV pickup truck! AWD, independent suspension would be nice, so would a 2 door option. A solar bed cover and/or roof would be the cherry on top!
Some of what we saw was surely pre-production. Practicality (the unavoidable physical contention between the battery and drive shaft that results from slavish adherence to received wisdoms of pickup design is eliminated as an engineering issue by deleting the driveshaft from the vehicle design), manufacturing simplicity, cost control and engineering elegance demand the elimination of the driveshaft from BYD's pickup. That's the right call but why didn't BYD take this to its logical conclusion by implementing a fully electric power train with the petrol motor only acting as a range extender? That surely is where sound NEV design is headed and BYD is no stranger to EREV design.
Better VALUE as any US engineered truck. That simple. Wonder when US governments see that GM, ford and ram see they need to change radically in order to survive.
With 100% tariffs on this truck it doesn’t matter to Americans they aren’t going to be buying it anyways . For people allowed to buy it could be a good choice but the price has to be competitive The hybrid set up sure is appealing with such long range and looks to be a decent work truck . There are much better Chinese cars though for people lucky enough to buy them .

Great review and content as always! This is a vehicle I have always been curious about, great to see a review in the US. A few thoughts on the vehicle. I think as a first market entrance this is pretty good, particularly keeping costs down. Interior materials look good, curious how they will hold up… It would be interesting to see if the judders and hesitation are merely refining calibrations or just inherent in the design? The wax coating oh boy, I hope it’s done well. I had a 2024 Sierra I recently got rid of because (among many other problems) the wax coating was coming off and frame rusting in multiple spots - including inside the frame rails (used a scope to look inside). Under the back seat is pretty bad, I have weather techs on my Ridgeline and fold the seats up regularly for muddy boots, pets, groceries, etc. I cannot imagine water or mud getting onto that battery or electronic packs would be good if it happened regularly. Perhaps it’s just a first gen thing or something they will improve upon. I really do not see these coming to the US, at least not any time soon. I feel like we have another situation here just like the Japanese and Korean cars fear and eventually they become mainstream and establish a presence here in the US. Our domestic autos really need to take this this competition seriously, it isn’t going away…
forgot to mention- battery does not catch on fire and kill you, unlike Tesla, Ford, GM, Mercedes, Hyundai, Kai, BMW, Toyota. and every other non Chinese EV. It has submarine tech water/flood safe. _ so you don't die in heavy rain/flood.
Pretty poor review, seemed like these two old guys had already formed negative opinions about the Shark 6. About the only decent comments they made were about the back seat when they lifted it up to reveal the frankly poor finishing on the base of the seat. BYD no doubt have an army of employees reviewing these channels, so will likely be making improvements for upcoming models based on feedback. They have said as such, when launching it in Australia.
Unfinished perhaps compared to a large American pickup but then the price difference, however comparing this to a Japanese pickup, vw amarok, ranger etc it’s leaps and bounds ahead
i think that these trucks might go more in the direction of serial hybrids with a range extender that is not directly coupled to the drive train. if i am right, Scout has already a plan for such a configuration.
Between Shark, RamCharger, Edison and others touting mixing EV with ICE, I'm quite excited. 117k so far on my i3 REx with ZERO issues or range anxiety (despite 90% EV driving) was me convinced this is the way to go widespread America.

At the current stage of battery development, you are correct. It will take solid stage batteries to make the shift into these vehicles and it is coming, those batteries do already exist and are being tested right now. But it will be a minimum of 5 years before they show up in the general market.
16:13 No, the engine probably isn't on at all. The assumption is the ICE drives the front wheel while the electric motor drives the rear wheel, but that's not how it works. There are two electric motors, each powering 2 wheels. In 99% of situations, all wheels are driven by the electric motor. The engine only acts as a generator that recharges the battery when needed. The pure EV mode merely disables recharging until critical battery levels. The only time you get the engine driving the front wheels is when cruising at medium-high speed and it's more efficient to drive the wheels directly instead of converting engine power into electricity first. (Can't do that at low speeds because there isn't a proper gearbox in this thing)

Also they pressed the EV/HEV button several times with seemingly no reaction from the car, only a change on the dashboard. So my guess is they are simply dealing with a new car and doesn't understand it all that well yet. You can look up other videos of the Shark, it's engine is very quiet, but still audible. Are you hearing any engine noises from the video?
The engine is on, it's just that silent. They do amazing things with noise control in China, we are just years behind. Tfl had this truck and couldn't hear or feel the engine.

Yet those two that you mentioned, still are dropping on sales number, which makes you realize how a highly competitive market could actually benefits consumers. Mercedes, BMW, Audi, even Porsche, Maserati, Maybach, etc etc, all have been either pushing discounts or lowering prices for their sales in the Chinese market, which you could rarely see in any other.
When Terry talked about the suspension in a pickup truck, he showed he really knows his stuff. An Aussie reviewer has a video where he actually loaded 300 Kg of wood in the bed and he said it became a VERY soft, very comfortable suspension. I have followed this truck since his world launch at Mexico, a first for any BYD product. I have seen dozens of videos from reviewers at Mexico, Australia and other countries. Never disappoints (just the uninformed reviewers). Also, please note this a hybrid but not the type of hybrid from the last few years: This one is electric first and most of the time you will not need/use the combustion engine to add power to the front wheels. Nissan has used this type of tech for several years now, not in the US. This hybrid type of technology is the future of electrified mobility: best performance, lowest emissions and longest range. Another thing to have in mind is the target buyers. The BYD Shark is a pickup truck very capable and with great performance. However, it will not tow more than 2.5T. It's simply not for heavy (HEAVY, HEAVY) duty. I would not be afraid of it "falling apart" (that's a ridiculous thought). I would definitely buy it.

You say you want one, and competition is awesome - are yo'll prepared for the job losses that will follow? There's a price to pay domestically to allow this choice that you want. Re the performance. Aussie utes (trucks) are typically 8-11 seconds to 100 km/hr (60mph) apart from the Ranger Raptor. The Shark is 5.7 seconds.

What disapoints me is that most "established" TH-cam car reviewers are extremely biased and would constantly rave on about 2.5 ton towing capacity and ignore all and the rest of it's awesomeness.. I think things like the hook on the rear seat are great. Use something that works well without paying for something more expensive that you only use every once in a while. Save complexity/money to give people a lower price point and people will be fine if it doesn't have certain features because....THEY ARE SAVING MONEY.

Utility beats fancy...especially now that cars have gotten very expensive.
And it saves buyers money, for a non critical, temporary use feature it's good to be so raw so less likely to be faulty. I'd hate holding some button for 10 seconds just to get my backseats reels up to grab something and then another 10 seconds to shut it...(car manufactures do keep those electric motions slow for safety reasons)
A New Zealander tested it and said the same about the ride. Then he threw some firewood in the back and it improved by miles. For us that are buying it with a canopy, just that weight will already make a big difference. My last 3 work 4WD's were all Ford Rangers. Including all the previous ones, empty..ALL of them were horrible in suspension, until you added some weight in the back.

About the reason BYD does not sell Sharks in China:
According to Chinese law: pickup trucks are classified as freight vehicles - trucks.
1. Due to China's rapid urbanization, some large cities have imposed certain restrictions on trucks entering the city.
2. The law stipulates that trucks must be scrapped after 15 years of operation. As long as cars pass the inspection every year, they can continue to be used.
3. The law stipulates that the speed limit on highways is 120km/h for cars and 100km/h for trucks.
4. Farmers will buy agricultural trucks. There are many specialized manufacturers in China that manufacture such vehicles, and the general selling price is less than $10,000.
I went to a BYD dealer in Australia this week and check it out. Didn't get a test drive so this review was very helpful. Cost wise though the shark at $60k is more than $40,000 cheaper than the Ford Raptor. Runs on half of the fuel and is only serviced every 20,000 klms. Fixed cost servicing $275, 275, 575, 275, etc right out to 160,000 klms when the warranty runs out. This truck may not be perfect yet but tradies are going to eat these up on cost alone.
Why ever compare this to a Raptor? A Raptor is a specialized performance off-road variant

Personally I don't think it's bad for just a Knockaround truck. All you need is to get you from point A to point B. There's some things that they have to improve on it but I think they got this down.

Very cool. The US auto makers need to "benchmark" this and get that to me ASAP. The truck market is just not doing it for me anymore with those huge, expensive, unwieldy behemoths as the only high-quality options available.

That was a fairly well positioned and cheap vehicle initially. Then Ford started increasing the MSRP, while dealers added their ridiculous fees on top. Not only would it solve the payload problem of 3,5tonns (in Europe at last) it would make the best campers imagine a hybrid system and a Isabelle battery that size not only to drive but for appliances

Definitely interesting in many respects. The suspension layout with the double A arms and split double lower arms in the rear is also something ive not seen before anywhere much less a truck. The front cabin is also pretty nice, build quality and materials look good. The bottom two spokes on the steering wheel are also open with control wheels on each spoke at the bottom part of the rim of the wheel, again another unique design I've not seen before.
Overall some interesting ideas at play here and maybe not all of them are a homerun but they are at least trying things others haven't done before and the consumer reception and maybe more important how well some of these hold up over time will determine if they were executed successfully or not.

No. It offers direct drive to the front wheels at speeds above 70km (depending on mode) - where the ICe is ruuning at it's most efficient. Also don't forget ICE kw power direct to motors... Everyone talks about battery charge re the ICE but not the the other two.
These guys should do a bit of homework before reviewing a vehicle.

Not a parallel hybrid, but partial only. ICE connects via geared clutchpack to front diff (via countershaft) at 75 km/hr, or around 40 mph. Usually parallel hybrids have a planetary sun type of transmission. BYD DMO manages power flow via clutched gearsets which seem robust and simple.

As I understand it the motor only comes on if you get to 20% or 25% battery. Even in HEV. You can set it to 70% so that you keep battery relatively full if say you need it for camping or tools on site.
Hard to tell if motor actually came on in this vid when he said it was quiet.
0-60 5.7 seconds, if daily drive range is less than 60miles, your gas bill will be less than 500$ yr and electrify bill around $500 too. Name a truck can do that

The reason it is getting such rave reviews in NZ is that it can run on electrons for over 80ks as well, and can power several power tools at the same time. It has already been tested here by 'eccentricity' by good old Gavin, always funny.

With the back seat and the cushion raised there are stickers there saying do not stow anything here. Yes of course you can put stuff on the seats but not stuff on top of the battery itself. In Australia we found the cables, tow ball and tongue in velcroed bags behind the rear seat upright cushion. I have a white one ordered for Jan 2025 delivery Melbourne Australia.

I was very disappointed in his attitude as well, as I have been a subscriber to the channel for years. I thought that, as they have had the Lightning etc in the States for some time, they must have an existing bench mark they were judging it against. I don’t think these guys understand the drivetrain… they described it as parallel hybrid ( with the front wheels powered by petrol and the rear powered by electric). Every other review has described it as a serial hybrid ( gas generator recharging the battery)

I've done some research on the SUV version of the Shark which was released more than 1 year ago in China. The ride quality indeed is not up to scratch much based on the owners’ feedback, which is the main issue they've found. However, the design of the interior and exterior is much more attractive, personal opinion.
The holes in the frame are reduce the body weight without undermining the strength of the frame.

To build an affordable vehicle, OEMs need to challenge everything they’ve been doing for the past 25 years. I can live with cheap carpet under the rear seat - but it does need more Bed Tiedowns.
The drive layout is genius. There is no need for drive shafts about time some though out a truck drivetrain. The electric motor in the transmission is stupid for hybrid drive.
Lot of so call hybrid awd use this lay out. Toyota passenger viechle use something like this. But their designs are putting a very pitiful motor in the back. And all it does is helping improve stability. Integrating the motor to transmission is likely they are simply run out of space... This thing is packed

In the Asian and Oceania markets this vehicle makes a lot more sense .The vast majority majority of users in these markets are purchasing Ford Ranger / Toyota Hilux size duel cab utes for family and recreational use .Fuel is also much more expensive than the USA . Full size US pickups are extremely expensive to purchase as they are RH drive converted in Australia which nearly triples their US price and they are simply too big for urban use over here .Rich bastards with enormous boats and caravans are the main users of big US pick ups .Most commercial users will have small trucks instead or A Toyota Landcruiser tray back.

For a very comprehensive look at how the drive train works and this vehicle in general search something like Australian BYD Shark review L2SFBC several videos covering it in detail from a very experienced Aussie Auto Journalist. BTW this is not a Prius style drive train more like an Edison truck. The ICE motor only ever connects to one set of wheels in a very small speed range at highway speeds as it's a single speed gear box .90 % of the time, the engine only ever charges the battery and only sees a steady constant load at an optimum rpm .

Reading the manual it's faster in sports mode then HEV with the motor contributing to power via charge under 70km then clutch kicks in at 70 and motor assists mechanically in acceleration.
Shark is good for the drone service business. Instead of carrying two to three generators to charge drones' batteries, they can directly use the Shark to charge the batteries.
This review was very negativity critical. However, even though it was negative, this truck is a treat to all existing trucks in its category (that is why the high tariff (100%) is put on it) it would sell like hot pan cakes!

Some of what we saw was surely pre-production.
Practicality (the unavoidable physical contention between the battery and drive shaft that results from slavish adherence to received wisdoms of pickup design is eliminated as an engineering issue by deleting the driveshaft from the vehicle design), manufacturing simplicity, cost control and engineering elegance demand the elimination of the driveshaft from BYD's pickup. That's the right call but why didn't BYD take this to its logical conclusion by implementing a fully electric power train with the petrol motor only acting as a range extender? That surely is where sound NEV design is headed and BYD is no stranger to EREV design.

So funny watching these guys - for whatever reason half of the comments come across as nervous and hesitant. If this was a US vehicle, and without tariffs, they would be gushing.
Great review and content as always! This is a vehicle I have always been curious about, great to see a review in the US. A few thoughts on the vehicle. I think as a first market entrance this is pretty good, particularly keeping costs down. Interior materials look good, curious how they will hold up… It would be interesting to see if the judders and hesitation are merely refining calibrations or just inherent in the design? The wax coating oh boy, I hope it’s done well. I had a 2024 Sierra I recently got rid of because (among many other problems) the wax coating was coming off and frame rusting in multiple spots - including inside the frame rails (used a scope to look inside).
Under the back seat is pretty bad, I have weather techs on my Ridgeline and fold the seats up regularly for muddy boots, pets, groceries, etc. I cannot imagine water or mud getting onto that battery or electronic packs would be good if it happened regularly. Perhaps it’s just a first gen thing or something they will improve upon.
I really do not see these coming to the US, at least not any time soon. I feel like we have another situation here just like the Japanese and Korean cars fear and eventually they become mainstream and establish a presence here in the US. Our domestic autos really need to take this this competition seriously, it isn’t going away…

forgot to mention- battery does not catch on fire and kill you, unlike Tesla, Ford, GM, Mercedes, Hyundai, Kai, BMW, Toyota. and every other non Chinese EV. It has submarine tech water/flood safe. _ so you don't die in heavy rain/flood.
Pretty poor review, seemed like these two old guys had already formed negative opinions about the Shark 6. About the only decent comments they made were about the back seat when they lifted it up to reveal the frankly poor finishing on the base of the seat. BYD no doubt have an army of employees reviewing these channels, so will likely be making improvements for upcoming models based on feedback. They have said as such, when launching it in Australia.

Back seat was amateur hour but plug-in-hybrid pickup is surely a good idea.
i think that these trucks might go more in the direction of serial hybrids with a range extender that is not directly coupled to the drive train.

Between Shark, RamCharger, Edison and others touting mixing EV with ICE, I'm quite excited.

At the current stage of battery development, you are correct. It will take solid stage batteries to make the shift into these vehicles and it is coming, those batteries do already exist and are being tested right now. But it will be a minimum of 5 years before they show up in the general market.
16:13 No, the engine probably isn't on at all. The assumption is the ICE drives the front wheel while the electric motor drives the rear wheel, but that's not how it works. There are two electric motors, each powering 2 wheels. In 99% of situations, all wheels are driven by the electric motor. The engine only acts as a generator that recharges the battery when needed. The pure EV mode merely disables recharging until critical battery levels. The only time you get the engine driving the front wheels is when cruising at medium-high speed and it's more efficient to drive the wheels directly instead of converting engine power into electricity first. (Can't do that at low speeds because there isn't a proper gearbox in this thing)
I think the guy in the truck knows when the engine is running better than someone watching a video later...
@@peterscott2662 They did state the ICE drives the front wheels and electric motor drives the rear wheels which is wrong. Also they pressed the EV/HEV button several times with seemingly no reaction from the car, only a change on the dashboard. So my guess is they are simply dealing with a new car and doesn't understand it all that well yet. You can look up other videos of the Shark, it's engine is very quiet, but still audible. Are you hearing any engine noises from the video?

The engine is on, it's just that silent. They do amazing things with noise control in China, we are just years behind. Tfl had this truck and couldn't hear or feel the engine.
