I just got mine a week ago (NZ) and its good. Not worried about the beach or towing its replaced our Ranger. Here in NZ we have to pay RUCs and petrol taxes so you never win really but it is what it is.
Its a very exciting ute/truck for multiple reasons. Its going to keep the big players in the segment honest. I wonder if BYD will release a version that is full electric in the near future. Would be awesome.
I’d consider making a separate harness off the brake, tail and indicator lights to bypass the factory harness that puts it in tow mode when the ecu detects a load on the circuit. Can then select SOC and traction modes manually. Savage are you contemplating this? I think you’ve made such a harness for the Tank 500?
Just small FYI on the speed when towing, Australian Law states you can’t travel more than 110kmh when towing, if under 4500kg gcm. If over 4500kg gcm then max is 100kmh. So although annoying it is in line with the law
The Australian convict bloodline demands at a minimum 10%+ speed increase to the upper speed limit. Australia is not China and Aussies are willing to take a punt on paying the extra "road tax" to get past "BMW", "Mercedes" 4x4 drivers who sit on 85 but speed up every time there is an over taking lane.
First for once lol Thank you for the content. So ev and eco mode are front wheel not rear wheel drive. Definitely need to let byd know about those towing issues. As an avid offroader with a heavy camper that simply won't do.
Great video. The car expert channel host is a complete knob. I don't watch him anymore because he purposely drives some vehicles incorrectly to make them look bad in his tests. It sounds like he may have done that with the shark if he didn't have it in tow mode when towing so the battery ran down. If that's what happened it would have been done on purpose. Looking forward to more vids on heavy towing and looking forward to when BYD bring out the updated Shark with the 3500kg towing.
I have a question. In conventional 4wds when in sand always turn OFF traction control. Can someone please explain how and why this is not the case with this vehicle?
Any chance when you do the caravan tow next time you advise how the electric brakes were connected? REDARC Australia don't know and BYD Canberra have no idea.
Our brake controller works. We have a patch harness already installed and ready for towing a big camper tomorrow. savagetech.com.au/products/towkit-brake-controller
nice review as always. when are you going to answer the big question, hill climb! I'm waiting for the Leapard 5 which larger motors back and front but on the same drive train as the shark
Amazing video and enjoyed it. Definitely a bit concerned about the engine revving that hard to charge the battery up as that sound like it nearly at redline could be wrong and concern on engine life. Also towing mode not letting you go over 110 is a bit concerning as when over taking a triple you want to get around them as quick as possible. Hopefully BYD fixes the small issue. Maybe savage can look at a long range fuel tank for it hint hint nudge nudge keep up the amazing videos and products as well
If you tow a lot I really don't think this is the car for you. Occasional towing would be alright but I wouldn't be trying to lap Australia in it. For nearly all other use cases except maybe extreme 4wding this Ute looks very promising. So for tradies (not needing to carry too heavy a loads) mine site people (except mine site vehicles generally have to be diesel due to fire hazards). General non extreme 4wding, farm work, and the people who like to drive Ute's who don't need them except maybe to go to the tip once in a while it's both promising and in some aspects ahead of all the competition.
@@brentsoutar7495exactly, couldn’t agree more. These people wanting to hook up their 2.5t vans is just ridiculous - but not quite as ridiculous as hooking up a 3.5t van to Hilux / Ranger et al.
@@jtt3346 could probably hook them up a few times a year for a few weeks if they really wanted with the benefit being the whole having a generator but still it's probably not the best car for that. And there aren't really that many people who want to do it in the scheme of things of ppl who own Ute's. People having hissy fits about it not being able to tow 3.5 tonnes don't seem to understand most people have no interest in towing 3.5 tonnes but would like a car that doesn't take 12 seconds to accelerate to 100km/hr. The only problem I have with chinese vehicles is that they are starting to get good enough now that they could displace much of the world's car making abilities and that may not be in the western worlds interest long term.
Obviously ECO mode selects front electric motor, not rear motor as you presumptionally presumed. Okay, your learning like us. How fantastic was that Eco Mode though, front wheels only & still happy to move off towing. Dont suspect many std front wheel drive vehicles could do that - In Sand - Towing. Bloody awesome traction control still operating to achieve that.
Unplugging the tow plug is going to put a massive strain on the vehicle brakes for those 2+ tonne trailers. You've essentially disabled the trailer braking system. You'd want to limit your speed big time with a heavy trailer.
He said soft sand only. If you are going to use your brakes in soft sand just remind me never to go drive on or near a beach with you Paul :) Having said that they really should fix it asap
@aljoubert8749 i wasn't referring to where he has taken it off road, it has more traction control settings than just sand, and in other off road scenarios you are going to want your electric brakes. Unplugging it may have been the quick fix for this video, it is not ideal across many others.
Thanks very much for this real world test- brilliant. I hope BYD China can take a look at these things they probably have not considered before Aussies like you tested it
No, what he said was in tow mode you can't utilise drive modes that are necessary when off road. He then said, as he wanted those modes he disconnected the trailer plug (hence no trailer lights), automatic tow mode ceases allowing him to utilise drive modes. It wasn't too much to understand/workout. He's hoping BYD address this allowing drive modes to be selected in tow mode. Obviously it's going to be an issue for those electing to tow off road. Stay on the blacktop (bitumen) you're going to be fine, no need to remove trailer electrical plug.
That is amazing 110kmh byd should drop to 100 mate if you are towing don't speed just stay ass and enjoy the drive you are not in a race or wake up early
