Suddenly the common childhood was present in him, the love of siblings and the pain of the loss. It all flowed into this music that is so beautiful it hurts.
In my humble opinion, Rachmaninov is a far far inferior composer to Tchaikovsky, just listen to the violin concerto of Tchaikovsky and imagine Rachmaninov composing that, and no, you simply cannot

Utterly Sublime, Poignantly Beautiful: it makes your heart cry in tears of abundant joy AND breaks your heart at the same time. Tchaikovsky has created an abyss of bliss and managed to lock you there, forever, with this piece.
This 5 minute masterpiece is arguably the most beautiful music ever written. It's such an emotional piece and how he makes that downward scale work so well is remarkable.
Superb at the climax with the maestro flinging his hands into the air and the camera shifting momentarily from the orchestra to the trees. This piece is surpassingly beautiful, every time.

My favorite Tchaikovsky piece! Looking at orchestra playing makes me admire how well coordinated they are and how wonderful the conductor is at directing all players. Really admire the art of music!
This is the best interpretation of this grand pas de deux EVER!!! He was and remains the only conductor who brings in the timpani ahead of the final chords at the end!!!! MADNESS AND MAGNIFICENT!!! BRAVISSIMO!!!!!❤❤❤❤
Oh how beautiful! I'm usually watching the dancers during this great work. But it's also quite an experience to see the orchestra and conductor interacting while creating such lovely music. The setting is so appropriate with the trees and the sky and all nature seeming to take part. Thank you, Maestro Tchaikovsky, for this masterpiece! :-)

Listeners may be interested to know that the main chord progression of the Pas de Deux, I-vi-ii-V, later became an important (overused?) harmonic "calling card" of the 1950's "Doowop" vocal style and other similar pop music of the period!

Oh, absolutely. I came to find this piece of music after hearing it in (the utterly fantastic) John Wick 3. I then googled ‘john wick ballet music’, found it and now I’d say I’ve listened to this in it’s entirety about 50 times today. It’s so simple on the surface. Eight descending notes. But my lord. Pure beauty. I shudder with tears at least once at some point. Magic.

The body of the piece is his memory of their times together possibly as children while the climax is clearly his final farewell to all that. Utterly heartbreaking!

The piece created after tchaikovsky knew his sister's death, the piece is basically a goodbye message to his sister.
