    LSV approaching St. Peter at the Pearly Gates: That was all unfair
    St. Peter checking his ledger: It says here you got to first pick an Academy

    one play that stuck out to me was g1 vs Eli when you drew ponder and basically slammed it immediately looking for a 0 instead of leaving up guaranteed mana leak. given eli had cast talisman on 2, mana leaking a 4 drop seemed pretty appealing and then even if he didn’t play anything on his turn 3, on your next turn you could ponder for your third land if you didn’t draw one naturally and continued to hold up leak. just a thought

    • @jesserobkin
      @jesserobkin 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      he said he got punished but then said there were a lot of things that would’ve rewarded him for it and by the end of the vid it wasn’t something he highlighted as an error. The fact that his only 0 was exactly Mox Opal main the play particularly reckless.
      I wouldn’t have said anything if he hadn’t been musing on what went wrong at the end 🤷🏻‍♀️

    • @peterklarskov1620
      @peterklarskov1620 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yea to me that felt criminal as well - you have the option to either mana leak a 4-drop or spin the map for an artifact land end of turn. If we had something like stockfish for Magic I have a feeling the % just completely tanked at that play.

    • @lindystylin
      @lindystylin 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Another one that stood out to me was killing Mastermind with Ballista in the last game - I think you're fine if op decides to just trade there, Mastermind is worth more than Skydiver in play anyway, and it drastically reduces your ability to kill Inti/Liberator/Lurrus

  • @johnhoge
    @johnhoge 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +64

    The Storm archetype has been mostly cut from Vintage Cube, but the Artifacts archetype is a worthy successor:
    -wins 30% of the time, but does so in spectacular fashion
    -requires an unreasonable number of the cube's card slots be dedicated to trinkety cards that are largely worthless to every other archetype just for it to have the card density necessary for it to come together and achieve that 30% winrate
    -absolute catnip to LSV
    This was a well-navigated draft and a great version of the archetype, but the fact that this is in the range of outcomes for it anyway is pretty damning. The generic cheap threats have gotten so efficient and numerous that they're pushing out all the character from the cube.

    • @williamscorse5643
      @williamscorse5643 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +12

      To me it felt like the draft could have gone better. This was a classic example to me of a big mana deck without enough cards to smooth out the variance big mana decks inevitably suffer from.
      I think there were too many picks here just taking the artifact for the sake of taking the artifact, and not enough thought put into creating a balanced deck. This deck had an extremely high ceiling, but as we saw with how the games played out it has a very low floor.
      It was pointed out already in the comments, but the Mystical Tutor pick was pretty egregious. That alone would have done some very heavy lifting in an Ancestral/Upheaval deck, and there's even a number of good ways in the deck to instantly draw the card.
      I wouldn't value the robots as highly as LSV, unless I already have something that's generating fast colorless mana. They are great with Workshop/Crypt/Ring/Tomb but I don't like them nearly as much with just Academy. I think pickups like Malcom/Borrower can play to the board more effectively and leave you in a better spot when the Academy stuff isn't coming together that game. The robots are pretty underpowered compared to colored threats, and Academy doesn't really accelerate them out well so I'd rather just have the good colored creatures in this case.
      I'd rather have a well rounded Academy deck that taps it for 2-3 mana than one that can tap it for 4-5 but struggles to find the right mix of cards.
      Personally, I love seeing the renaissance of Naya colors in cube, but I do think it's swung a bit too far and pushed control largely out of the cube. Perhaps raising the average CMC in those colors slightly? The critical turn for the cube is harder to pin down when power is involved, but I do feel like an extra half turn on average would make a big difference for less assertive decks.

    • @johnhoge
      @johnhoge 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      @@williamscorse5643 I was trying to be charitable, since I've been in these comments bitching about the innumerable failed artifacts decks a lot over the past few months, and this draft was much more justified than many of the others have been. But yeah, passing Mystical Tutor for a Smuggler's Copter that wound up getting cut from the deck was a major unforced error.
      LSV has long been too low on the top-of-deck tutors. (To the extent he has influence on the MTGO list, he may own some of the blame for Enlightened Tutor being cut.) They're boring, but once your deck has one or two game-winning cards that they can find, you're just supposed to take them over most other things.

    • @whiterose9854
      @whiterose9854 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      i think part of the problem is if the cube is exactly 360 cards, 45 times 8. there is little diversity of what you gonna see to begin with, yes cards are added and removed, but you still see some form of combo(storm, doomsday), reanimator(reanimate, life/death), companion(lurrus, lutri), artifact deck type. personally if the cube was just slightly bigger, things could be a little better, maybe some more boardwipes, i find it insane that meltdown isnt in the cube, also a personal bias, i would like to see more enchantments maybe even replenish lol. but yeah just my 2 cents.

    I feel like Academy decks have to have such a fine balance of mana sources and payoffs. They flood out so easily, or don't have the mana to do what they need to do. They certainly can be really powerful, but they also seem to be quite capable of spinning a lot of plates and not actually accomplish much.

    • @jeef16
      @jeef16 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      its on the same tier of reanimator imo. reanimator just needs quite a few things to line up nicely to get a big guy on board in a timely manner (reanimator isnt a grind friendly archtype anyways due to needing to support your deck with multiple reanimate spells, discard outlets, and reanimate targets which limits you in a few ways. and quite a few cards are gonna blow out your entire strategy) but when it works, it smacks hard. but ultimately you still suffer the same problems of losing to faster combos or decks that just spew out card advantage while you're durdling with a handful of mid artifacts hoping to make something happen. like reanimator, you also are really sensitive to people picking up key pieces for the archtype because they're just generally good spells. for reanimator, thats your reanimate/animate dead cards. but for artifact decks, you need the blue goodstuff cards because most artifacts you play have little impact other than ramping you, so your grind game/mid game is always gonna keep you on the ropes. its hard to balance being proactive with card advantage for a such a resource-heavy combo like academy and reanimator because of how much space it eats up in your deck and needing to take the scraps from the goodstuff picks

    I’ve noticed one choke point of Academy decks can be when there is no way to retrieve cards from the graveyard/timetwister effects. Most times I see them them pop off involves a reshuffle draw seven which nearly guarantees continuous gas. Seems like Emrakul is always a good option for academy decks as you have the mana to cast it, serves as a great top end, and hedges against petering out

      2 mana draw 2 is nights whisper which is a playable card.
      The power is the flexibility in that it can be card advantage when you need that, or it can be a finisher when you need a finisher.

Concentrate on the elements of the game that genuinely provide a meaningful edge and can be quantified. Also I haven't watched any games yet but I feel like candelabra is a trap here as when do you really need 20 mana or whatever and most of the time its just 1 mana do nothing and would have been better as a talisman or just a basic island likely to improve consistency of openers (felt like the deck has plenty of high power/high end plays with academy around and if you dont have academy candelabra sucks right?)

    These decks are so full of air, really need draw 7s to be good. Maybe could have salvaged a 1-2 by picking Karn over talisman.

    I hate to be asking this but is Academy good in vintage cube anymore? It felt like all the setup required to make academy busted, mainly the 1-3 MV artifacts, are just so far behind what 1-3 drops do these days that you just end up too far behind even with the extra mana. Not to mention how bad it makes your deck when you don't draw Academy. Just felt like Vintage cube has become to fast and efficient for big Academy dreams.

    I do wonder if you’re underrating Palantir in Academy decks. Night Scythe has been surprisingly good, but Academy decks end up with a lot of air in them. Palantir is a high impact card that only costs 3.

    I've never seen anyone with such bad variance. Instantly punished for everything by the mtg gods. 6 months ago, LSV was consistently crushing, he would even get lucky with the way the packs work out. Now it feels he's running below average on every draft even when he opens some good cards, the rest of the packs don't work out, and when he plays his opponents always have exactly what they need for a blowout.

    It’s gotta be tough creating content and competing against great players. I don’t think even playing perfectly you could’ve beaten some of their draws. Your draws too, were mid at best. Sucks deck looked great

    I realy dont get it. It feels like every video contain those gut punches. Misstakes might have been made but I dont recall punishments beeing this consistent and severe six months back.
    Back then I was frustrated that so many matches of cube felt like average midrange draft piles slugging it out. Now every single 4 cc good stuff deck just keep slaming. What am I missing here?

    • @brianh5844
      @brianh5844 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If you focus on the negatives it will seem that way. I don't think the universe is actually out to get LSV. He's definitely been on the wrong end of variance more often than expected, but he's also constantly on the lookout for persecution.
      I genuinely feel like he would benefit from a magic vacation. Maybe even something like a meditation retreat.

    • @gippygames
      @gippygames 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Academy only really needs maybe 2 finishers. But it's supposed to ramp into a draw 7 or equivalent. Was shocked that he passed Echo of Eons. Didn't like Trinket Mage over Nettlecyst either (Trinket Mage becomes a 3rd Academy via Expedition Map or Candelabra), and Copter over Mystical Tutor, which could've fetched Echo of Eons. Lastly I would've probably picked Batterskull over Sicarian Infiltrator as it's really the type of creature you need to slam after Upheaval. The game that he lost after resolving Upheaval because he had no win-now finisher really stung.

    The problem I see with these decks is the lack of board interaction. Sure you have some counterspells, but the cube is very board presence orientated and playing mana rocks and leaving up mana leak is not good enough anymore it seems

  • @Haloanonymous
    @Haloanonymous 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I personally thing mana drain is the best non power card in cube. you can spend a whole draft making sure your academy can generate 3-6 mana, or you can get that effect in one card, and it counters something? I would love to see the stats on wr when played because i would not be surprised if it was above lotus

  • @coyotemoon722
    @coyotemoon722 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Mana Leak is mostly good early game and you kept not keeping it up. Copter was a horrible pick over Borrower because you had so few ways to crew it. Borrower also seemed better since you had no interaction. I also think you could have played one less land, and the Ponder keep 3 Islands was one of the weakest plays of the game.
