I recall being aware Prime was going to die going into seeing the film in the theaters (I was probably 5 or 6 at the time). I don't think I ever took issue with the deaths of memorable characters as surprising as some of them were; I always just accepted that they were killed off. I guess I was one of the few target fans Hasbro was catering to that just was interested in what new toys were coming out lol. But yeah Prime's death was quite epic and the final battle between him and Megatron remains one of my favorite scenes from any movie.
For sure. I think my brother told me he heard Prime was gonna die, but seeing it happen was a whole 'nother experience. Yes, that final battle between Prime and Megatron was epic.
@@ToyKennections I just feel bad for my poor father who took me to see it and had to sit through that whole movie (because my mom wasn't going to have any part of that lol). I'm sure to him the movie was just 90 minutes of noise. But to his credit even he was a little surprised when Prime died.
@@jeffjames7894 yup. That said, the times change and I happily took my boy to see TF Rise of the Beasts last June, lol. Luckily I didn't take a parent to see the '86 film when it debuted. My first experience was on VHS.
Great video…I remember all the ads going into the movie…especially the promotion of Optimus Prime dying. It was weird to watch the last OP led episode on a Friday…no way to watch the movie…then on Monday…no OP or Megatron, but new characters that seemed forced on us with all our favorites were gone. Most of people I knew that were fans quit Transformers all together, and Hasbro is forced to have OP return for good once they realized OP was way to popular.
The Killing of Optimus Prime is a cautionary tale: Take care of your beloved fictional characters. While there are benefits in killing Prime in terms of story telling, the reality is that Hasbro got rid of him just to make way to sell new toys (I feel like Dinobot’s death in Beast Wars was handled a bit better imo). Imagine if Lucasfilm made a Star Wars sequel Trilogy and carelessly got rid of the old cast just to make way for new characters we barely know or care about. Oh wait…
I was born in 1983, and I remember starting to watch Transformers when I was around 3 or 4 years old. When Season 3 aired, I was confused by all the new characters and especially wondered what happened to Optimus Prime. Initially, I thought Ultra Magnus might be Optimus Prime until Rodimus mentioned him. Eventually, my interest waned because I hadn't heard about the movie; back then, there was no internet, so all information and commercials were only available on Dutch TV. My interest reignited when an older brother of a friend told me about the movie, mentioning a giant planet Transformer and many Transformers dying. He also mentioned the Headmasters and Powermasters, so I was probably watching a rerun of the show. Despite being unable to watch the movie at the time due to its rarity, I was thrilled when Optimus Prime returned in the show. From that day, I became a super fan of the series, although the show ended shortly after a few episodes. I still remember that they never aired Season 4 on Dutch TV, so I never saw Headmasters or Powermasters until the internet was introduced.
Great video Ken! I've been working on my own play motion series which deals with a lot of stuff from the viewpoint of the Dinobots, and I'm about to do the year 2000. I see Megatron exploiting Vector Sigma somehow ruining it, stopping the Transformers from the ability to gain any new life. It's always fun to wonder what was going on with many of those season 2 characters while all this was going on. Then again I guess Cybertron's a big place...
I think these were some of the classic lines from the movie: Wreck-Gar and Junkions: "Framed in enamel! Resists fire, rain and corrosion for up to 5 years! Satisfaction guaranteed!" "Or your money back!" Wreck-Gar: "Stop, thief! No welcome wagon, hello stranger, with that good coffee flavor for you!* "Offer expires while you wait! Operators are standing by!"/"Steady as she goes, mob! Snoopy visitors get mud in the eye by and by! Film at 11!" Grimlock: "Me Grimlock kick butt!" (even funnier is that he meant it literally!) Slag: "Excuse me!" *By the way, does anyone happen to know what shows/commercials Wreck-Gar was referring to when he said that first line?
The story of Optimus passing the Matrix to Ultra Magnus constantly reminds me of the Biblical Issac passing the blessing to Esau, but God choose Jacob instead, as the Matrix chose Rodimus
This is great...I think one mistake they made was all new autobots on the poster.i think that hurt sales and in the commercial they ask does prime die if so who will lead the autobots... Mistake

Transformers the Movie may not be perfect- but its far more preferable to G. I. Joe the Movie, where Lt. Falcon, Jinx, and Tunnel were severely misrepresented. And the Transformers were spared the likes of Cobra-La. Thank you for stating that Duke was just the field leader, as First Sergeant, as the animated series took a LOT of liberties from what was established in the Marvel Comic series by Larry Hama. Regarding "Till all are one", given how Hasbro's acquired other toy companies, a running gag over at Dan Larson's Secret Galaxy TH-cam Channel when Hasbro gets a new company is, "Hasbro- Till all are one!"
