I’m 47 now and watched this movie opening weekend as a kid in the theater. So many kids were crying and weeping when Optimus Prime died. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing at the time. It’s a classic of a movie because it pushed all boundaries ever imagined, but it sucked at the same time to see our heroes die.

Starscream: Megatron, I just realized our weapons aren't set to kill.
Megatron: Wait what, no wonder we've been losing, let's set them to kill now.

It only sunk in that they were all dead for real somewhere near the end of the movie. It was a slow, sinking realisation, like ‘Oh. They’re not bringing them back, are they?’ I literally couldn’t watch season three for MONTHS after the fact I was so distraught - it just felt wrong, that the show would continue when all the bots we knew and loved were dead. Loved it though! Such a good movie, and I really liked the new characters it introduced (blurr and hot rod especially)!

9:05 "After 2 seasons the Decepticons finaly found the kill switches on their guns?" I always saw it as the Decepticons being at full power from a steady supply of Energon since they had gained complete control of Cybertron in the movie and the Autobots were on the ropes short on supplies and only controlling 3 small bases on Earth and the 2 moons of Cyberton.

    • @BraveBladeProductions

I mean that’s a pretty good analysis of the situation. I just thinks it’s pretty funny that after they slapped each other around for so long in the cartoon, they finally started actually killing each other.

The 1986 movie works as a splendid standalone anime movie of the era, and still has more heart crammed into it's 87 minutes than the 12 hours or so of the live action films combined. Also Vince DiCola's music score was excellent.

I was old enough back in 1986 to understand that there was a form of character development for Hot Rod over the course of the movie and so i never hated Rodimus Prime. Also, I'd read the Marvel comics adaptation of the film first so i had a heads up regarding Optimus. That said, i was NOT prepared to see my beloved Wheeljack laid out dead on the big screen.

I must have watched this movie at least 100 times as a little kid in the early 90's. I still vaguely remember waiting for it to start on TV so my older brother could press record on the VCR. This was in Perth Australia, but it was before channel 10 (Channel 10 was only a few years old at the time, and didn't have reception where I lived) had the rights to the show. I'm fairly sure I have that recording on tape in the garage. I can still remember some of the adverts that played, even though it has been decades since I watched the tape after getting the DVD. Anyway, enough rambling. I just found your channel, good work. Also the Transformers movie sound track is on Spotify, and it kicks all kind of arse

I got into Transformers right after the original wave died down (via my older brother's hand-downs) and first saw the movie when I was 5 or 6. It was like the best thing I'd ever seen. I wasn't that upset about Optimus because I had already seen some of season 3 which had all different characters - so the movie just answered my questions. I was more upset about Prowl!

  • @andrewrichards312
    @andrewrichards312 ปีที่แล้ว +6

So I'm 4 minutes in and there are a couple of things I need to correct. Firstly, Transformers wasn't simply rebranded Diaclone. Yes everything with a cockpit, as well as Blitzwing and the Constructicons, was a Diaclone figure, however there was more than just Diaclone which comprised the original Transformers toyline. In addition to the Microchange toy line, which was not only every single device, but the Autobot Minicars, which actually transform into Pennyracers, you have Gunborg, which was licensed from a company called ToyCo, which was recoloured into Shockwave, as well as Mechabot-1 (which would be recoloured into Omega Supreme) into and the figure which would become Sky Lynx, which were licensed from ToyBox, who in turn commissoned TOMY to make them for them (hence why the Encore line was the first time Sky Lynx was released in Japan, after the TakaraTOMY merger). Additionally you had the Macross Valkyrie being recoloured into Jetfire, Oveleon Gazette and Mugen Callibur from Dorvack being recoloured into the Deluxe Autobots and the Betras toyline which were recoloured into the Deluxe Insections - all of which were licensed from Takatoku Toys. Where it got interesting for Takara and Japan was when Takatoku went bankrupt and was acquired by Bandai in 1984.
It's also worth noting that by 1986, we start to see unused Diaclone designs being incoproated into Transformers. Metroplex and the 1986 combiner teams are an interesting example of this, as the scrapped Diaclone toyline called "Jizai Gattai (freely combine mkx.dk/Ep01.html). In fact, given that there was a prototype Arcee figure which was a retool of Hotrod, there's evidence to suggest that some of the 86 cast were designed as toys first and then altered for the cartoon later.
Oh and fun fact, Shoji Kawamori of Macross fame, not only worked on the early Diaclone toys, but the Valkyrie/Veritech fighter from Macross/Robotech was created because Kawamori was winning a bet over whether it was possible to create a jet transformer without removable parts being needed.
To that end, it's worth noting that Car Robot Number 02 Onebox Cherry Vanette (recoloured into Ironhide) and Car Robot Number 04 Onebox Cherry Vanette, Ambulance Type (rebranded into Ratchet), actually make perfect sense. The mold was actually the 5th "Transformers" mold ever produced by Takara, with the first 3 being the Powerdashers and the 4th being Car Robots Number 01 Countach-LP500S/Super Tuning (recoloured into Sunstreaker). At this point, the Diaclone line was very much still framed around the Dianaut figures first and foremost. In the case of the Vanette mecha, even though it only came with one Duanaut, it's actually designed to fit 3 3 of them. The pilot for the auxilliary powered suit, which is similar to the mecha from Avatar, sits in the pilot seat of the van. Meahwile the back half of the van splits off to become a tank, which seats one pilot and one gunner (standing) in the missile launcher turret. You can find an image gallery for it here: diaclone.net/orid/dia037/index.html
It's only when they tried to shoehorn them into Transformers by doing foolish things by putting stickers on the driver's seat to somehow make the seats heads, that the designs start to come across as bizarre. Part of the problem is that the branding decision was made that the cars and trucks would be Autobots and the military weapons and devices would all be Decepticons. As a brief aside, Optimus and Megatron were chosen as the leaders because their toys were the same height.
I bring this up, because if you look at Ironhide's colour scheme and face in the cartoon, it's clear that both were actually based on MC-18 Magneman (blog.kapowtoys.co.uk/mc17-and-mc18-trasformers-not-transformers/), which interestingly enough is a Microchange figure which was never released as a Transformers figure.
    Hopefully you found this informative.

The brutality, the death, the sense of loss, it was what gave this franchise its staying power. Watching characters die, utter swear words and mourn. It was like this was no longer for kids. This was 1986 - the year The Dark Knight Returns and Watchmen proved comics weren’t just for kids.
Transformers: The Movie allowed us to feel like it was ok to keep enjoying this stuff, even if middle school was starting next fall.

Not only did they kill off optimus, but they made it worse by playing with our heart strings. They brought him back in the third season as a zombie that was a shell of who he once was. He eventually regained control of who he once was and sacrificed himself by launching the ship carrying the corpses of all the old autobots Into an astoroid. Sure they brought him back in the 4th season but we didn’t know that was going to happen so it was just rubbing salt into the wound.

I always found it funny how in the cartoon, these global level threats would actually be killing MILLIONS yet the Decepticons are allowed to run away and try again next time. Also 80s had mandates where characters couldn't die onscreen, even when characters on both sides should've died. Movie went balls to the walls. Movie was a fun ride, even if it's an extravagant toy commercial.

I got so use to seeing parachutes and people jumping out of vehicles as they exploded in GI Joe that when Robotech (Macross) came to the states in the 80s and appeared on television it took me a few minutes to realize there weren't any parachutes or escape pods popping out before the explosions. It's weird at 11 when you realize several minutes later that Rick Hunter's best friend actually dies and that some of the people living in the remains of Macross City brought inside the SDF 1 were killed the first time the ship transforms. That was the first instance in which I learned that the assumed maturity levels of kids in Japan were different from the assumed maturity levels of kids in the US.

My childhood perspective of this movie is kind of odd... this was my first exposure to transformers. As a young kid who already loved robots and vehicles and warfare, this movie BLEW MY MIND. It was the most incredible work of fiction I'd ever seen, and it permanently etched itself into my consciousness. Afterwards, I'd catch reruns of the old '80s show, as well as newer stuff like Beast Wars and Armada on TV, and they would feel kind of... lame in comparison. Even as a kid it didn't feel right that the robots almost never actually died in what was supposed to be a war.

MY dad had just dropped off my mom, my sister and a few of her friends to see the "My Little Pony Moive." I'm in the back seet, my dad turns to me and asks: "Did you want to see this Transformers movie? I said "NO. Lets go to the Dinosaur museum." As a young child this did NOT grab me. I would discover it in mid-high school in the mid 90s as a teeneager, appreciating the Gloious Brutality. Those four deaths at the beginning actually look like GORE. Shame the (Ahem) "live action" movies fell short in just about every regard.
Also, I presently HIGHLY APPRECIATE the old Marvel UK TF stories from back then. HEADY!!!! I'd love to see someone capture Andy Wildman's art style in animation. Also Gloriously brutal, in his battle damage details

"It's funny watching Optimus slowly become a psychotic war criminal with each movie" Story time. My friend, knowing I liked Transformers, bought me the bluray for Age of Extinction as a present. Being a big dinobots fan, this should have been top tier for me. I have seen it ONCE. I own it, and the other 4 Bayverse movies, plus Bumblebee on Vudu (I think it's fandango nkw, but fuck it, Vudu) because I bought a box set at Walmart, and walmart just...made a Vudu account for me and put digital copies of movies I owned there. Anyway, I have not rewatched 4, nor have I gotten around to ever seeing 5 for one reason: Optimus. Forgive me if my sequence of evebts is off, I've seen it once when it was new...but when Optimus first transforms he basically goes into homicide mode and nearly kills a person on sight. I can accept a LOT of things...Transformers has a lot of variations and alternate universes. What I can't accept is a non-evil Optimus who would immediately go straight to murder. That took me out of the movie from the start, and it never got me back. This is a 'man' who has fought Megatron for millions of years and never killed him...because part of him hoped there was another way. And a big moment in nearly every Transformers continuity is Prime sadly reaching the point where he realizes Megatron HAS to die. My favorite being in Prime...where he nearly kills Raf with a Dark Energon infection, and Prime decides that, former friend or not, Megatron has to die. Circumstances prevent it for the rest of the show, but he makes a go of it.
But yeah, that's the limit of my suspension of disbelief. I can accept evil alternate universe versions of characters: Injustice Superman, Shattered Mirror Optimus, etc. But Optimus Prime is one of those characters that embodies the definition of 'Good guy' in my head. Fucking with that destroys my ability to play along.

If Hasbro had only introduced newer versions of the old characters, like they do today! The entire idea was bad. Offing so many of the older characters. It's mindblowing. But yeah cartoons the attachments characters created and the entire toy market behind it were relatively new. A lot of lessons were learned. And in the GI Joe line they learned from that mistake.

Killing off Optimus Prime is a cautionary tale: Take care of your beloved fictional characters well. While there are benefits in killing Prime in terms of story telling, the reality is that Hasbro got rid of him just to make way to sell new toys (I feel like Dinobot’s death in Beast Wars was handled a bit better imo). Imagine if Lucasfilm made a Star Wars sequel Trilogy and carelessly got rid of the old cast just to make way for new characters we barely know or care about. Oh wait…

Wow, you share my sentiment more than any other reviewer I've seen on the youtubes. (Except for the bay-former films or what I like to affectionately call 'The Trashformers - garbage in disguise.' )
The effort they put into this movie is undeniable; very hard to erase it from your head-canon if you're inclined to do so cuz you can't deal with some part of it. I totally get it. They killed Optimus.
After learning the show & the film were nothing more than advertisements I had to find a way to accept the movie because of it's exceptional quality in art, music, etc - & also because....it was TF's! Certain flaws in the film's production helped me find a way around the commercialism. Head-canon.
I can accept Optimus bitin' it, but maybe not some of the others. The 'Beast Wars' series introduced the idea of sparks, which are their souls basically, & Optimus greying-out is the indicator he's gone but not before he says he'll become one with The Matrix. His essence is transferred, so he dies. Greys-out.
Now I take this as a good sign for the others, except for Starscream, who do not lose their color. Brawn, retains his color, Ratchet, Windcharger, Wheeljack all retain their color. They're not dead. Ironhide...ok ...he uhm...he takes a fully powered shot to the face after four penetrating hits to the body. :-( Not even that amazingly armored skin of his could hold up against that.
Even Prowl greys-out & is seen again with all his color.
    Not dead - Stasis lock.
Again, I'm arguing across space & time, with the powers that be, because their motives were shitty. Und hence I'm giving credit to a species which, has been doing this for ages, is so long-lived for more & better reasons than being perpetually lucky, by chance, or just perpetually bad aim for millennia upon millennia.
As for Optimus....I think they blew it big time in coming up with a solution to all the hate mail. The answer is in the movie - twice! & I mentioned it here too.
Think SW - "Yoda will always be with you." "Ben..!"
(And oh boy I can't wait for a certain 3rd party toy company to come out with their version of Optimus in Masterpiece scale - he looks so damn good. But Ultra Magnus first in Dec. 2024.) :D

IDW is a continuity mess as of a few years into it, at fundamental universe-building levels. Initially the transformers were set up as being "gaiasexual" (ie the planet reproduced sterile drones - either being "forged" or helped along with being "constructed cold"). then down the track, because of "the message", we get romantic and pseudo-sexual relationships between this version of the Transformers, which in terms of the lore that had been established for this reality, makes as much sense as people having romantic relationships with their pet guinea pigs. The truly asinine part was that they were almost there when they explored functionalism, but then failed to grasp what was right in front of them - namely that functionalism-based interpersonal relationships, pair-bonding and bigotry, was actually the means by which you explore those types of themes surrounding the human condition, in a manner which actually holds up to scrutiny.
Honesty, some writers should stay in their own lanes and those lanes are limited to writing for societies where the beings all have an approximation of human biology, reproduction and interpersonal relationships.

Ciekawostka: Według skryptu scenariusza, HotRod otwierając ogień do Deceptikonów miał powiedzieć "This is for IRONHIDE. As so's this!"👍
