Is it okay for me to leave in my pull shed until I can no longer pull?

Yes, leave it in until it's no longer useful.

Hello, When you start either verticle or diagonal lines do you start the weaving moving right or left? Another question. My string heddles will not open now the rug is moving upwards. My heddles are the width of my batten, but you heddles look longer. What's my problem, Thanks Sonny

Doesn't matter as long as you are consistent. I usually start left to right. Sounds like you need to make your heddles longer. Sometimes mine shorten on the right side and I need to twist them around to get them back to their original direction.

Hi Caroline, Thanks so much for your informative videos and explanations as I learned a lot from them. I am new to this area of art, all my info comes from a number of videos I watched online about Navajo Rug weaving. So, please forgive me if I am asking something obvious or silly. I have a few questions for you: 1) Is this is a way that Navajo Nation weave their rug as a Navajo Rug? Or it is just a way for tapestry weaving? I am asking this because I haven' t seen those comb shape metals you use at top and bottom of the on Navajo looms; they rather use woods (with for example half inch diameter). 2) My second question is also related to first question: In Navajo weaving, how those half perimeter remaining extra warp are managed? I am guessing they don't cut it, but somehow manage it. Here is an example of Navajo weaving video:

First of all, remember that Navajo weave is tapestry weaving. What makes it unique is that it has a selvage on all four edges. The only way to do that is with a continuous warp. Traditional Navajo looms do not have the metal combs at the top and bottom, that was my own invention. However, Navajo weavers love to use Cactus Flower looms and the end result is the same. The warping process is the most tedious part of Navajo weaving and the combs simplify that process.
I'm not sure what you mean by no. 2. Do you mean the part that goes around the dowel in the warping process? Or the ends that are left when you finish warping? If the first, after they wrap the warps around two dowels they are then bound onto another set of dowels. If the latter, the ends are simply woven over.
Remember the video shows only a portion of the weaving process. They leave out a lot of the slow, tedious portions. If you are interested in learning the entire process from start to finish check out my book, "Weaving the Navajo Way, How to Create Rugs, Miniatures and More." You can find it on eBay and Etsy.
Thanks for your interest. Let me know if I can answer any more questions.

@@carolinespurgeon6016 Thank you very much for your reply. Obviously, your invention of using metal combs makes warping process much easier.
In my previous comment, my second question was about traditional Navajo looms that do not have the metal combs at the top and bottom, rather they use dowels at top and bottom of the loom.
After they finish the weaving process and when they want to separate tapestry from loom, some extra warps remain around 2 dowels (on top and bottom dowels). How they weave these remaining warps? You mentioned that "the ends are simply woven over". Could you please show me how they do this part? Thanks for your help, much appreciated.

If you're going by the video they left out several important steps. After the warp is strung around the two dowels they then add the end edge cord at the top and bottom. Then the warp is bound onto two additional dowels. It is bound on with heavy string that goes around the edge cord and the new dowels. Then the original dowels are removed. That leaves the warp bound onto the new dowels by the edge cord. The warp is then fastened in the loom. Because the warp is bound onto the dowels by the edge cord only, none of the warp goes around the dowel. Therefore, when the weaving is finished, that is, all the warp is woven, the string that binds the edge cord to the dowels is cut and the finished rug is removed from the loom. There are no uncovered warps to weave,
They finish their rugs just like I did in the video. The only difference is I pull it off the combs. They have to cut the strings that hold the edge cord to the dowels. I hope that makes sense! I'll have to see if I have any pictures available I can send you.

What do you do with the final tail once you have closed the gap?

    • @carolinespurgeon6016

Weave it back in an inch or so and cut it off at an angle

Weave that final tail back in an inch or so and snip off at an angle. You won't see it at all if you've packed enough rows in.
