    man, the complexity of old combo decks is so insane!
    I can understand why some folks don't enjoy the shift towards creature-based, linear design that we see now.

      +TheMagicManSam I'm glad someone gets it! Modern design is a total drag comparatively!

      So you think a game where each opponent just waits to hit their "win this turn" combo enabler card (ussually on turn 2-3) is more fun than modern magic?

    • @mvargasmoran
      @mvargasmoran 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@cosmotect I think he is talking about to one the most fun parts of Magic: the Gathering (at least to me), Deck construction.
      Just looking for ways to enable old cards (like that cumulative upkeep thing plus Donate) or make efforts to cheat creatures into play, or powering up a 20 dmg fire thingy, it's awesome and the more complex and the more tinkering (yep some of us like to tinker with code, never ending paintings, high maintenance, clocks, and yes Magic Decks) the more fun is to be have.

      @cosmotect 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mvargasmoran its not like I don't get that sort of fun hahah. My modern deck is in fact the fire thingy deck :D
      I keep trying to make it work in modern

    Loving these videos Evan, but rather surprised you did not mention the rancor mistake. It was originally supposed to cost 1G, but a printing mistake left it at G without a collector number, and the rest is history.

    I was about to write a comment about how Mark messed up by making such a powerful set, and then I started thinking about how much I complain about new sets being underpowered. My eternal struggle: Give me more powerful cards to play with, even though the game is no fun for anyone else when I get them :P

      @TheRedGauntlet 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Tryo707 It isn't.Its an arcaic deal to apease a minority that dumbly invested on a trading card game. It only benefits a minority. What i hate the most is thAt wizards can't make functional reprints even tough i doubt the original card would lose value.Is also killing the Legacy format.

    • @keithfilibeck2390
      @keithfilibeck2390 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Tryo707 the "List" is just Wizards promise to money tender collectors to keep their expensive cards expensive, forever making Legacy and Vintage an Old Boy's club.

  • @ScrapperTBP

    Phyrexian Negator was reprinted though. In a duel deck. Coalition vs Phyrexia

    • @TheMagicShow
      @TheMagicShow  8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      +ScrapperTBP They went back and retroactively added "Premium versions" to the Reserved List (i.e. no foils of Reserved List cards, including Masticore, Phyrexian Negator etc); I didn't include this bit in the video, but they did go back and retroactively changed/updated the policy and apologized for it.

    • @ScrapperTBP
      @ScrapperTBP 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      The Magic Show Ah I see. Yeah that makes sense that you wouldn't include it. It is a lot of dense information and not particularly relevant to the story you are telling in this episode. Thank you for the information and for all the work you do on the Magic Show and Magic Mics.

    Oh my God, I hated Replenish! My most hated deck before the first incarnation of Affinity!

  • @Firevine
    @Firevine 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The game was SO fun back then. I find modern design extremely dull comparatively. There's more reasons than just the stupid Reserved List causing these cards to be expensive. These old sets are slap full of experimental, unique designs, that WotC would in no way consider these days.
    Combo decks are dead, and that makes me sad. I build some bonkers stuff back then. Now, people call Infect a "combo" deck, and that is really sad. Combos historically were generally completely bonkers loops or game winning locks. Not the basest of base gameplay like casting a giant growth on an Infect dude.
    I played a lot of Sligh and Ponza decks back then, so I always had a creature based strategy floating around, but unlike today, that wasn't basically the ONLY strategy you could play. Plenty of us had creatureless decks, or had old school control decks that only ran a couple finishers. You could be very creative back then, but now everything is so linear, and I really do not like the game anymore.

    • @keithfilibeck2390
      @keithfilibeck2390 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Firevine they were just broken, everyone involved admits this, nothing was on purpose or intended, it was just broken cards the R&D team failed to balance.
      not to mention this level of Brokenness very nearly killed the game.

  • @MrTacticalApproach
    @MrTacticalApproach 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    So Masticore was the "IT" creature after Erhnam Djinn? Can someone give me a history lesson on this lol I quit after Visions stared playing again in Magic Origins.

  • @brownbruce27
    @brownbruce27 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    The reserve list is still a mistake. The game has changed and new players want to play old cards without having to spend life savings. It is no longer a Trading Card Game. It is a Strategy Card Game. They key is to have fun!
