    This video is just amazing. The history collected here is great. I was working on researching this for my packcracking series. This goes well beyond what I had found. Well done Even, well done.

    I got to see this yesterday, and I'm blown away by how well made these have become. The sheer amount of knowledge and insight is almost ridiculous. Keep doing your thing, Ewan, and I'll keep supporting you.

    Easily the best show you've put out Evan. Looking back on Magic history/lore is always entertaining.
    Seriously dude, if this show ever stops I might have to go sit in a corner and have myself a little weep.

    Outstanding video! I'm really enjoying this series.
    A friend introduced a few of us to MTG shortly after New Years 1994, and we bought whatever we could find. After Unlimited dried up, we were so bummed to go to the comic store and ONLY be able to pick up Arabian Nights boosters. Fortunately, we were hooked enough that we continued to do so!
    I am very fortunate to have a full Arabian set. Dollar value aside, it represents my earliest memories of this great game.

    • @infocalypse3754
      @infocalypse3754 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I only started playing during Revised and stopped shortly after... er... what did they call it? 4th Ed? I haven't played for literal decades and they keep printing these things out. I think they're on 20th Edition or something.
      But ooh, my glorious Dual-lands collection.

    • @kmberger4
      @kmberger4 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Andrew Chapman Close! I believe M15 is the 16th core set. I had an addiction for dual lands. Whenever trading, I'd make sure to grab those at any cost. Sold a bunch a few years ago, but I still have quite a few.

    • @infocalypse3754
      @infocalypse3754 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I still have them all in a box. I'm too much of a packrat to be considered a card investor. I just never let things go.
      Relatedly, dual lands are surprisingly expensive these days.

    • @kmberger4
      @kmberger4 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Andrew Chapman Indeed! I helped a couple friends sell some of theirs recently, and they did quite well for stuff that had been packed in boxes for over a decade.

    Shahrazad was so much fun to play with in casual EDH before they banned it in Vintage. I would cast it and during the "mini game" I would attempt to cast Ring of Maruf in order to bring back Shahrazad to cast it again in the "mini game" for it to go into a "mini mini game"

    I can clearly remember being at the hobby shop buying RC car parts and trying to get the attention of the workers to help me, but they were excitedly unboxing a shipment of new Arabian Nights and were completely ignoring me. They were talking about how many packs they could keep vs. how many they had to sell to customers, some of whom were already lined up waiting. I was intrigued, but we were supposed to be Christmas shopping and my Dad was pissed it was taking so long because he didn't want to go to the hobby store in the first place, so we left and went to the mall. Even worse is that I can remember months before that browsing around in the checkout line and picking up Alpha or Beta boxes and boosters, reading the packs and deciding against buying some. Eight months later I was spending all my money on Revised cards. At least I have a shitload of dual lands... (and regular ones, half the time I could only get starter decks because the boosters sold out immediately) Whenever I watch people opening Alphas and Betas I think of that time when I literally had them in my hands and could have bought them at retail.

    Somewhat around 1996 I think I bought 1 Arabian Nights set A WEEK, on usenet from americans for around $750, because the price was almost double that here in Europe. (there was no Ebay) I paid for college that way..... the singles sold like hotdogs..... I can't believe I haven't kept ANY of these sets...... I only have left a few pages of assorted commons..

    Juzam Djinn? I used to hang out at the only comic book store in my small town.
    The owner, had a fucking AAAAAAMAZING Black/Green deck. If you're a MTG player, from the very beginning, you'll know that Dark Ritual, Juggernaut, Juzam Djinn Berserk & Chaos Orb was enough to trample the fuck out of you

  • @MrBeaux

    Arabian Knights, Legends, and Antiquities are such awesome sets. I wish I could have the experience of opening a booster from one of them, but sadly, they cost hundreds of dollars. I guess If I'm ever feeling like opening some old school sets I'll have to stick to Homelands and Fallen Empires.

    What's awesome about this set is how most of the cards are just solid playables, even today, at least by limited magic standards, which is definitely not the case of other early magic sets. No grey ogres with drawbacks here.

    Watching these reminds me of the horrible Reserved List. I understand that Mark Rosewater and Hasbro care about "Integrity" in maintaining the Reserved List, but it hurts the game.

    • @IgoRStripes2
      @IgoRStripes2 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Paul Gaither While on one hand it hurts the game, on the other it is what allows for the game to continue on. After the Chronicles debacle, they don't want to turn players away by reprinting expensive cards... and since many of these cards are now at $100+ price tags, they don't want to "hurt" their consumers. Though we're seeing semi-aggressive reprints of cards not on the Restricted list, they are aware of the second market and don't want to have Chronicles 2, occur.

    When was the concept of Planes and Planeswalking introduced? The block that introduced that must have been a bomb.

    • @skyrimsniper
      @skyrimsniper 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      The first time a plane was clearly separate from another was Ice Age if I'm not mistaken. It was the first expert expansion and, as such, introduced players to different places. I don't know what you mean exactly by "Planeswalking" (either players as planeswalkers or the actual card form. I'll assume it's the latter). If you meant card form, it was Lorwyn block.

    • @kunstderfugue
      @kunstderfugue 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Skyrim Sniper
      I meant planeswalkers as a lore element, which includes players being walkers. However it's awesome to know when the card was introduced!

    There's a card called jihad? Should've been a red card.

    • @hapjiwaya
      @hapjiwaya 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Jellyfrosh No, agressive white is perfect. White is about devotion, orthodoxy and sacrifice for what is seen as a greater good. Jihad is just the muslim term for an holy war, it's like a crusade for Catholics. Red is more about disorder and chaos, it doesn't fit for a religious war call. In the context of Arabian Night, it's not a terrorist jihad. It's a medieval holy war. A modern jihad would be rather tricolor black/white/red.
