Mine works you need to install both of them in one house on the google home app.

I noticed that the new version that's coming out has a remote. Do you know if it will also have an actual interface like Apple TV & FireTV or will you still have to cast from your phone?

I have Roku. This device requires I cast from my phone or iPad. Roku does not. Correct?

Roku doesn’t require you to cast but you can on TH-cam. the Chromecast does require you to cast from a bunch of devices
