Today, we are excited to launch the very first Talking Watches from HODINKEE Japan. In this milestone first episode, we welcome Shuhei Nishiguchi, the Director of BEAMS F, the prominent men's clothing retailer in Japan. He is also the author of “Nishiguchi's Closet” (Gakken Plus), where he discusses his hobby of collecting vintage watches. He loves to wear a great watch as the finishing touch to an outfit. His watch collection is mainly from the middle of the 20th century. Each of the watches perfectly matches his style, which always involves mixing vintage and modern.
These watches are from a time when classic style reached its peak in terms of size and design. With sports watches being the most popular in our modern age, this is a good opportunity to discover the appeal of more classic style watches.

It's interesting to see the difference between the collections of American collectors on Talking Watches and the Japanese. Here we see all of his watches are showing dials with advanced patina and scratched up crystals. Often you hear American collectors seeking watches in relatively decent condition or unworn new old stock, so they would not acquire these kind of watches. But the Japanese appreciate wabi sabi, believing that vintage pieces should have lived an honest life, like the weathered face of an old man. So it's great that this guy is kind of expressing that it's ok to collect battered, old watches. Surely he can afford vintage Daytonas and Subs, or a rare Patek, but he decides to buy what he loves, not what the trend setters dictate. A refreshing look at another world of watch collecting. Thanks Hodinkee.

I love the old watches and a watch like the Lip wouldn’t be crazy expensive. It is a gold watch which ups the value, but a regular vintage Lip is pretty affordable.

It's quite interesting how Nishiguchi-san created a time capsule around himself: his brand is heavily inspired by classic American casual clothing, his watches are not the flashiest, but they're very representative of the era he's chosen.
Also the host-guest dynamics in Japanese culture is fascinating: lots of nodding, bowing, appreciation. Thanks Hodinkee!

Wonderful vintage collection and a nice change of pace from the typical Rolex and Patek collections consisting of the same 5-10 watches. I never understood why collectors often shy away from beat up watches, I have been guilty of this myself. If you are buying a piece that is 40-80 years old it should look the part.

I thinks this hits right in the core of Hodinkee followers. Normal guys with passion for (mostly) vintage watches just for the thrill of it. Not as an investment or a business for yuppies. It doesn’t need to be a Rolex or PP to make you happy wearing it.

The Japanese concept of beauty includes an appreciation for the transitory. The word the collector uses is translated as “ephemeral. “ (About 7:10)
I don’t know which word he used, the traditional phrase is “mono no aware.” It’s why they love cherry blossoms so much-amazing one day, swept away the next.
I suspect this is connected to the enjoyment of patina, scratches, and so on.
Western civilization has traditionally placed more emphasis on permanence as an element of beauty, thus our practice of collecting watches in perfect condition.

Within the last few years, I have been collecting vintage pieces with advanced Patina and character. Except, my pieces are 38 and 40 mm respectfully. One is a chronograph that is missing a hand but it is a Girard Perregaux from 1957. I can appreciate the decision to collect the older models despite being able to get more contemporary pieces. My GP is my favorite piece currently...I just spent money getting it serviced and my watchmaker had it eight months because of needing to find the correct parts. That exclusivity is priceless for me.

How cool. That two tone Bulova was sweet. The patina was great on many of them and love that he didn't even replace the cracked crystal on the IWC. Other than clothes, most of everything I own under my roof is from the 40s - early 80s. As far as watches, I think the 40s -50s offered the nicest, cleanest, stylish watches. Wish, I had the money to match his style but have to settle for cheap examples of Bulova, Caravelle, Garon, Cort, Helbros, Eloga, Waltham etc. Wearing one is a transport back in time to when a insurance agent, police man, baker, factory worker was wearing it.
