  • This song is from Act 2 of the Stonewall 50 Concert by the Columbus Gay Men's Chorus which chronicled the queer rights movement before and after the stonewall riots.
Scarecrow is a ballad from Melissa Etheridge that tells the story of the kidnapping, torture, and homicide of 21-year-old University of Wyoming student Matthew Shepard, motivated by ant-gay sentiment. The image of a scarecrow was chosen because the bicyclist who found Matthew Shepard, tied to a fence, first thought he was a scarecrow.
    Soloist: Sarah Winters
Artistic Director: 2010-2019 Dr Timothy Sarsany
    Choreography: Shane Coe
    Lighting & Slides: Jarod Wilson
Video Editing: Jason Bockis/ JB Media Design

Love how they showed a picture of Mitch McConnell at the beginning, so apt.
It’s people like him that keep us from being truly free and equal

Beautiful. Such gut-wrenching lyrics and a message that strikes right to the heart of our humanity. I've cried every time I've heard it since its release way back in 1999. It hasn't lost one speck of its power and it was certainly done justice here.

great song. would have appreciated this performance much more if the opening solo had been performed by a male.

holarc just because they currently have a female name or may have been biologically female, does not necessarily mean they do not belong in a gay men's chorus.
      Gender and sexuality are fluid.

What does it matter? If they stand by us and support us, does it not make us brothers and sisters? Considering the topic and what the song is all about, does it matter what reproductive organs the soloist has? I mean the song was written and originally performed by a female.
It’s only when we stand together in love that we can conquer the hate of those that seek to divide and subjugate us.
