This is really cool! However, I think the idea that this sprawling layout was ever considered to be the final design of Kokiri Forest is a bit misunderstood. More than likely, things were spread out for the sake of the developers, i.e. each individual chunk of the forest could be modified freely - expanded, shrunk, add more elements, etc. - without having to worry about expanding into a neighboring piece of the forest, then having to take the time to move it out of the way, reposition, realign, etc. Then when all chunks were fully developed, they were brought together in one simultaneous move for the release. Just an educated guess

The area looks very different than the final version. Sure has changed quite a little during its development.

I can see why this was scrapped. Having a starting area this massive in early 3D; let alone a starting area that rivals the overworld in size, would have been very intimidating for the time. Not to mention this version of Kokiri Forest seems like it wouldn't have encouraged experimentation with the game's mechanics as much.

I remember seeing this version of kokiri forest on a demonstration N64 at a toy store near my house around OoT launch date (I guess).
The only thing I remember is this massive field with grass and those flying "sprites" that form when you idle in kokiri forest.
Made me think if this area wasn't like, made as a demo version to showcase the graphics and 3d without sending the retailers the full game and risking piracy.
I actually remember the fog to be much much denser though. Anyone has any memories of something like this ?

when I was a kid and saw people playing mario, pokemon, smash bros, link/zelda games, almost none of them were zelda/link type games and I had been to friends houses where they had anything else, like pokemon stadium, hey you pikachu, mario 64, mario kart, but I didn't see banjo tooi or kazooi, zelda 64 almost at all as a kid in any of my friends or families possessions, when Toys R Us received gameboys as one of Nintendo's things they were releasing in the US like where I was being New York state if not the city, I was someone who a few times in a week was driven over to Toys R Us to see the games, toys and when the Gameboys were released on day 1 or at least in 2 days, at least every single gameboy was bought before I could even get one myself lmfaooo, I was also almost unlucky where I was hoping to buy a pokemon game for my nintendo ds or perhaps my 3ds which ever it was, and I noticed that a guy at Target which was one of the workers saw me like sheesh, this is the last copy of some pokemon game and I can't buy it because its supposed to be there at least until its the very last one the store has atm because they need one of each game all the time to show which retail game is being presented in the cases, and though he felt bad for me and still gave me the last one which although would've been the one to show off for retail, I was like oh thank you god lmfao, and I used action replay codes with almost all of my Nintendo games, not simply because I wanted to cheat, I wanted to experiment game features, beta levels and such and my friends hated that, I was like why hate what you wont be technically allowed to see unless your at a Nintendo unveiling/showcasing/releasing game product type trailer/show place their presenting something at? these times are very rare to be in and as well as Nintendo has may more then 100 million kids that own a lot of their games as well as a lot of adults as well, so to say I shouldn't cheat in the games was under estimated for what I was truly trying to do and that only was to see what you'd never be allowed to see thanks to Nintendo's game support type measures which blocks the ability to see certain game elements, features, logos, icons, items lmfao.

Even to this day I'm wondering how do they make those pretty colorfully FOGGY environments. Seem so characteristic for various N64 beta projects and released games. Any Ideas? Do you find them beautiful or creppy?
