    Good review as always. I hope your brother enjoys OSLeap and incline more towards Linux as primary operating system.

    I've been on 15.6 since Alpha and loving it. Especially with the current issues in Tumbleweed and KDE 6. I'll be switching another laptop to Leap 16 when that comes out.

      Understandable. I really hope KDE 6.1 cleans up some of the mess.

    The correct way to change the default zone is by actually clicking on "Zones" and then it lists all the zones and which one is the actual default. It shows a check mark . You select the zone you want to make the default one and click on the "Set As Default" button. This also results in it adding your network interface to the screen where you had just the docker one.
    I do hope that at some point, Yast will be a thing of the past as it's really gotten long in the tooth and some of the things in there were not very intuitive. At least to me.
    On more gotcha for those of you who have scanners with non-opensource drivers. Opensuse by default deactivates all the drivers /etc/sane.d/dll.conf . They use a script to then detect if the newly inserted USB device has a driver available and activates it. In theory, well their theory this helps mitigate security issues. In practice, it deviates from the sane project's default settings and wastes one's time :/

      Excellent information and I thank you much for sharing. I'll give all that a look and adjust my recommends accordingly.
      I agree completely that yast needs a complete rework or removed.

    I was running Tumbleweed for around two years and it was great but I didn't need so many updates after all.. And now I'm under Debian 12 (via SpiralLinux KDE) which is also great but not that polished as opposed to OpenSUSE..
    So this is tempting.. I may switch back to Leap in the end =)

    • @LowTechLinux

      Keep us updated if you do.
      There's also slowroll based on tumbleweed which attempts to slow the updates down a little bit

      I've used Debian before but never Leap so I'm tempted to try Leap full-time. I'm currently on Void for the last two and a half years.

    Alongside Debian, OpenSuse is one of the oldest and mature distributions. If you look for a stable distribution and you want to focus on what you need to do, not on the operating system, then Leap is a good choice. Is also a good choice because is flexible, if you don't want a bloated system you can do a server install, choose the base pattern you want for your DE and finally you install only what you'll use.

    • @folksurvival
      @folksurvival 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      How do you think they compare? (Debian and Leap)

    • @LowTechLinux
      @LowTechLinux  5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @folksurvival they're both designed for the utmost stability and both have older packages of everything. There's a slight difference on the two about which packages are older but not by much. To me it comes down to the feel and completeness of the distro, and to me leap has the edge over Debian. Ymmv, especially with the next leap afaik being based on ALP.

    What is Leap?

    • @LowTechLinux
      @LowTechLinux  12 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      It is a point release openSUSE distro somewhat based on SUsE Enterprise Linux. They also have Tumbleweed rolling release and Micro for immutable release. Last but not least they also have slowroll, which is based of tumbleweed. It's also a rolling but slower, less daily packages and roughly every three months a bigger update to catch back up.

      @@LowTechLinux Thank you. I had an issue with the install yesterday and wanted to get back you. Second time around it ran through it (cough cough, walked?) without issue. I want to thank you for your videons on OpenSuse. I looked at some others, who spoke way too fast and who just assumed we were at a certain point. You don't do that. I REALLY appreciate you and the way you present. I'm not a novice concerning linux, as I said yesterday, been using it since RedHat 1998/9? Also an x-cissp (got tired of paying the dues), but we can always learn new things. Bottom line. I THINK THIS IS THE BEST DISTRO I'VE USED IN MANY YEARS. Now I've only been in it for a couple days, but I really like the way it does things. I did have a monitor issue with the task bar and sign in being on my outboard monitor, which I "kind of" fixed, but other than that, it's fantastic. Finding printers after taking down firewall was no issue. ONCE AGAIN, you are the man. Thank you sir.
