Don't sand the caliper pins. Clean them with a solvent and grease them.
Don't get grease on the braking material of the brake pad. Stopping your car requires FRICTION.
Clean the brake dust off the areas of the caliper where the brake shoe slides.
Try not to chisel the red paint off the caliper with your screwdriver.
And yes, there is a way for diyers to deactivate the e-brake without idling the engine.

Indeed way to much grease, but maybe even more important: grease on the brake surface of the pads! (6:27). At the first brake, this grease will spread on the discs and the rest of the pads, instantly killing them. Sorry guys, but the surface of the discs and pads need to be absolutely grease free. Handle them like they were your grandma’s cristal glasses ;)

Dosent the handbrake need to be reset using diagnostics? I was given to understand i would not be able to replace rear pads myself.

Chock the front wheels and if you are quick and have a good battery leave the ignition on or leave the car ticking over at idle and you can leave the handbrake off.
When you are done replacing the pads the motors will self adjust on the first actuation.

Isn't the handbrake electronic ? Did you have to plug into the car to release the piston or did it just wind back ?

You can leave them in gear with the ignition on and the handbrake off, you don’t need the fancy computer to keep it off.
