3D Barrier Shattering Effect created with Houdini 20's RBD SOP Solver. I utilized glue and soft bullet constraints to simulate the shattering, along with an iron rod inside the barrier. Additionally, I incorporated grains and dust for a more realistic appearance.
I have also uploaded a simple Houdini file example, including static wall and rod breaking, to provide a better understanding of the workflow. This allows you to test on static geometry for a quick check of the values.
For rendering, I utilized Karma XPU and rendered all layers separately to facilitate compositing and enhance the look in post-production.
Note: To achieve a more realistic behavior, I implemented some manual workflows post-simulation for better art direction of the simulation.

Brilliance at one shot.. amazing 👏🏽👏🏽
Thank you 🙂
The sim look clean! can I ask how you dealt with the convex shape of the small pieces to look that precise? (not the particle)
Thanks, those are emitted RBD debris. I always use them to settle nicely on the ground.
@@VFXMagics I haven't gotten into debris emission yet so maybe the collision accuracy for small geometries are different, compared to simulating small pieces from a fractured geometry
@@n3tbug330 Yes, small pieces can be troublesome, but they add a lot of realism to the simulation. What I do is use box collision for smaller pieces to ensure they behave nicely on the floor. Convex hull makes small pieces vibrate a lot on the ground and they keep rotating. Check out my tutorial th-cam.com/video/UOCMAUNQLbA/w-d-xo.htmlsi=ZlWdujuFL7GNcXXO , and you will understand. This tip is very useful.
@@VFXMagics what would be the best way to emit random rbd pieces? I have blasted/separated 10 different pieces from the fractured geometry and I have emission rbd solver system ready, im just not sure how could I emit them like particles randomly?
do u use the latest rbdmaterialfracture1 nodes or still rbd bullet solver ?
I am using the rbdmaterialfracture1 node, and for simulation, I am utilizing the very handy rbdbulletsolver1 (SOP).
is this a class tutorial?
It's actually a complete Houdini project file, not a tutorial.
@@VFXMagics ok u better make a tutorial for this tha way u can sell it because whos is goin to buy a project file
Cool
Thanks! :)
👍🏻
Thanks :)
Is These Next Tutorial??
Hey, I haven't decided yet; I'm still working on the concept for my next RBD III Tutorial.
