    I just happen to have all the stuff needed at home but never thought of making a notebook this way. Thanks for the inspiration.
    Oh, and the space sausage is so cute :D

    That's a great corner cutting trick. I'll be using that, thanks!

    Love this. You can also go to the thrift store and buy leather jackets, leather pants or leather skirts. That's what I do. Saves me a lot of money and gives the leather new life.

    Upvote for Sandvik Bahco pliers - my favourite manufacturer of hand tools.

      Sorry, but there are no Sandvik Bahco pliers in this video. Those pliers are made by Lindström, and were made before they merged with Bahco. They're both nowadays brands within the Snap-On brand though.

    Nice vid. Love most anything dealing with bookbinding and this one shows a nice, simple method that produces a great result. Never thought about looking for leather scraps from the sample books. Thanks for the info!

    Cool design! Interesting timing as I am watching videos while I am folding paper making signatures for several journals I will be stitching together later.

    Trimming books without a "proper paper cutter" is done with a couple of boards (hopefully around an inch thick for one of them at least- both bigger than the book), some clamps and a chisel. You align the boards so the one in front is on the line you want to cut and the one on the back is higher up to provide something to cut against. Clamp the boards and book together and then taking only a few pages at a time slice with the flat edge of the chisel supported by the edge of the top board.

      @SwitchAndLever  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Trimming books, yes, but trimming a notebook can just as well be done with a straightedge and a box cutter, as you're not making your way through a lot of papers. The thicker the more prone to error that method is though.

      @phookadude 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's nearly impossible to cut a square edge through more than 8 sheets because a knife will wander due to the cutting edge being in the center of the blade. This results in each successive page being slightly wider than those above it. Cutting through two sheets of leather and the paper will definitely distort things. You can use a chisel and straight edge (they do make chisel edged hobby knife blades that work well for that) but to get anywhere near professional results you need a cutter like the one you have or a couple of boards and a chisel.

      It depends entirely on your "handmanship". You have to use a steel straightedge, adequate downward pressure to ensure it doesn't shifts, and slice several times with even pressure through the layers. You can easily trim 20-30 layers without it looking poorly if you have good technique, after that it starts getting difficult to control the drift.
      I'm not saying your method is wrong, I'm just saying it's a bit overkill for thinner stuff.

    • @SwitchAndLever
      @SwitchAndLever  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh yes, there are lots of different ways to stitch. Even the Japanese technique I'm showing here have variants from extremely basic (like mine) to wonderfully ornate, with stacked stitches and all sorts of craziness.

    I love the clear way that you explain things, and the captions are super useful. Keep up the great content! I've been subbed to you for over a year (I think). Also, super clever way to make rounded corners with the magnets!

    • @SwitchAndLever
      @SwitchAndLever  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not magnets, I wouldn't use magnets either as they would attract the knife blade making cutting quite troublesome. They're just pieces of steel.

    The way you dismissed using a $150 punch cutter after just using a several thousand dollar book cutting machine had me lol'ing. Great vid though:)

    • @SwitchAndLever
      @SwitchAndLever  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't own that paper cutter, but I will use whatever tools I have available, why shouldn't I? If I didn't have it I would have, like I mention in the video, used a straightedge and a box cutter to achieve similar results.

  • @Bloodray19
    @Bloodray19 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    At work we have exactly the same corner cutter that you showed, and it works awful. it doesn't cut the corners consistently throughout it's way from the top sheet to the bottom one.
