      I used my 602s for years in my main home theater until I found a deal I couldn't pass up on a pair of used CDM1NTs. The 705 was the successor so I'd say it's a good upgrade. The Nautilus 8 series get up into silly money.

    Overall build quality is acceptable for the price. IMO good quality drivers, cheap crossover, acceptable enclosure. This crossover looks like a custom one, esepecially the large condensers in it.
    Most people accuse the metal tweeter, but I think the kevlar midwoofer unit and the 6dB/oct crossover circuit together are responsible for the relativeli harsch, siblilant sound. IMO the 6dB crossover does not filter higher midrange resonancies of the kevlar membrane.

    • @chipset65
      @chipset65 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! Is true, I did some separated woofer/tweeter measurements in REW and woofer speaks 7Khz very well. I wonder if the separation could be better with a 12 or 18 dB filter Question: it possible (and desirable) changes the crossover to this values? Sorry if is a (very) noob question. Thanks

    Nice video, I have a pair and are one of my favorites. How or where can I purchase the whole piece you´re/he´s holding in 1:02? I see that piece has several components attached and one or two of those burnt out so I would like replacing the whole thing (the external connectors and plate are ok, it´s the transistors which are damaged). Kindest regards

  • @a0r0a7

    Always amazes me the wire used for the crossover and driver connections. This proves there is no need for expensive speaker cable that is often pushed after sales. I know this is a entry level speaker but this issue remains in much more so called expensive hi end speakers.

    • @Techscrews

    • @a0r0a7

      @@Techscrews apologies, for B & W its one of the less costly speakers in the range. The cable used sadly looks very basic. The guage is on the small side and I wonder if it is even OFC copper. These speakers would not require anything more than 16 guage from the amplifier let alone some expensive dare I say snake oil speaker cable.

    Yes this cuts through all the marketing hype - we see the guts of the speaker. Fairly ordinary - but a unique tweeter. Nothing special in the cabinet construction.

    • @biggityboggityboo8775
      @biggityboggityboo8775 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      The drivers are quite the stand out here. The woofer offers a fully cast basket with a raised and fully vented spider. From what I've seen B&W also tend to include shorting rings in their motors, even in their more budget ranges. The tweeter looks fairly standard except for the 'nautilus' tube.
      No electrolytics in the crossover = a big plus for speaker longevity.
      Really there's nothing to fault these for except the obvious cost cutting necessary in the cabinets.

    • @chrisvinicombe9947
      @chrisvinicombe9947 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Bespoke drivers are always gonna be more expensive at a given level than off the shelf units from driver manufacturers. Crossover was alot more simple than I expected. Cabinet is fairly well braced and damped. Overall a good build for the money.

      @tomkocur 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The cheapest crap used to build a box is a paper (used for tube car subwoofers), particle board comes right after that, still a cheap crap that doesn't even hold together. MDF is much stronger, it might even be better that plywood, just doesn't look as good. But it's pretty much the best to work with.

    • @parasitelights3158

      @@jasonjackson3114 A very interesting hypothesis. I'm just wondering if I like the speakers and they fit my budget, on top of that they go great with my amps but they cost $4.5K what should I do? Should I run like from a rabid dog or rethink my entire worldview because there must be something wrong with me to fall for this heresy, to like speakers for less than $5K? Or no, wait, I thought of a more paradoxical scenario. So for two years I've been after these great speakers at an incredible price: three-way electrostatics with 15" bass and since they're quite an old model they're only asking $6.5K. So that's where I got my New Year's bonus check and finally collected the money and I go overexcited to the music center and than bam! What a horror! It turns out that the manufacturer is withdrawing them from the market and have reduced them by almost half and on top of that from all of the excitement I didn't look at the calendar and it turns out that it's Black Friday - their price is lowered down to $2.5K. What the hell, two thousand five hundred dollars!?! I can't be that unlucky. Now what am I supposed to do? Apparently I'm going to have to buy the new model for $8.5K, and for the wife and the kids there will be no presents this new year too.

      You have to understand that great budget speakers weren’t as “available” as now if that makes sense. There was no Andrew jones making the elac debut series and the pioneers, at the moment Polk t15 bookshelves are on sale for 70$ on amazon. That kind of quality for money wasn’t as available when these speakers were made. That’s why you see the cheaper materials, although they still might have a really characteristic sound and I saw them in good condition for 75$ sometime I would definitely pick them up.

      I don't think too many people who have B&W speakers would agree with that. They sell a lot of speakers, but you'll notice that more people had B&W, then have. They're aluminum tweeters are like ice pics in the ears, and the diamond tweeters sound like sandpaper. The midrange is very good, and that's why people buy them. After a while, though, the highs will start to bother you, and the bass is very lean. And that's when the fun starts. Instead of just getting rid of the speakers and buy something better, most try to fix them with tubes, cables, tweaks... An after spending all that money, then the speakers go. Much better speakers can be had for a lot less.

      I own the 602 S2 and what can I say is they are superb speakers, that needs a great room to work properly. Untreated bare walls are enemy from these tweeters - This, plus treating the room with the right amount of traps down to 40Khz (and it means lots of absorption) and you´re done. One will read all the BS about these (and others) great speakers: from "boomy lows" to harsh highs", "scooped mids", etc, etc. Truth: biggest part of these problems are room/speakers interaction related. Proof? Listen to the vast majority of YT videos showing Hi Fi speakers, even the expensive ones - in a poor treated room, they usually sounds bad. Mine is in a control room treated for mastering. I will post a video asap showing the speakers here.
