During a bass player's growth, it usually goes "OMG, Flea is a god!", then "Flea's good, but kinda overrated", then back to "OMG, Flea is a god!" For me, it has stayed at that final stage once I realized what an incredible overall musician Flea is and how I enjoy listening to his playing as much, if not more, than the virtuoso shredders. Tremendous video, Ian!

I would say:"OMG, Flea is the best"...then:"Flea is great, but...there are other good players"..and then:"Wau, Jaco is best, but Marcus is so cool, Wooten is amazing, Mohini Dey is great, Pino Paladino is so groovy, Anthony Jackson is so inovative...etc etc...and at the end, who is flea? :D" Sorry, at least in my case it is like that

You are not alone ;) I started to play guitar along with the cd. So great guitar ideas from Frusciante. Then after a while, I though that guy on bass played so nice stuff I had to try. Except I did not have a bass. Found out a friend had a crappy one so I bought it. I thought bass players played with fingers only and assumed the ´big sounds’ were when they played with their thumbs and pulled the strings, as I heard about it. That is how I started, not knowing anything else haha.

Before John Frusciante, RHCP sucked. Hillel Slovak was crap. Anthony's mouth was super filthy. Probably because he thought he had to curse a lot to try and make up for how crappy their stuff was.
But when John joined, everything got 1000% better. I think this is proved by all the songs they've done with John.
Flea is super incredible, and John is too.

The demonstration that groove, funkiness, rythm feeling... is on the simpliest things is "Give It Away". The bass lines on the album are all spectacular, but the easiest one: the coolest one.
(And it reminds me a bit of "Come Together" in the simplicity and the glissandos that go up and down the fretboard).

  • @Al69BfR

I actually have to listen back to all those RHCP albums, but from the top of my head, this was the first where Flea played a majority of the songs with finger style and is not slapping most of the time (or was it Mother’s Milk already). That was really a game changer. And I liked RHCP and Flea from the moment when they were support act for George Clinton and Funkadelic back in 1985 and I watched their gig on TV. So I like when Flea hammers the bass but also when he „softly“ pulls the strings.

First foray into stringed instruments was me teaching myself to play bass. Bought the bass notes for BSSM and stayed up until dawn for weeks with my $20 bass.
The night I kept up with Flea during My Lovely Man on the bass break I almost cried. Also, when I learned to play Mellowship all the way through, I felt closer to the band.

Nevermind definitely brought forth a genera of music but the previous generation of music was already dying/dead at that point. I would consider that a 'right place right time' album for package and sale as the scene already existed.

I picked up the bass a few years after By The Way which I revistited. Flea is the reason I picked up the bass.

One of the best albums I’ve ever heard, one of my favorites of all time and the best of RHCP indeed.
The ending of Funky Monks sounds like a trumpet line and guess what: Flea plays trumpet.
It would be amazing have the solo of The Greeting Song covered in this video.
    Thank you!

Good work, not just a great bass album but awesome musical album overall.
The Under The Bridge chorus starts with a power chord 9th A string and 11th on the D string I'm pretty sure.
    Cheers

I bought the bass book for this album back in 95 or 96, I have never known Naked in the Rain as drop D and it scaled the notes differently on others. Definitely it made for more dramatic fretwork.

Thanks for the great video. I remember when this album came out. It was refreshing and caught our attention, even that we’re listening much heavier music. Big fan of those lines and songs.

@@paulharper6464 yeah, even as a guitar player digging the soulful simplicity of John's lines throughout the song (and it's super-fun to play as well), I always loved the playful, funky bass going on underneath just as much.
I wish that the people I jam with would learn some tunes like this. ☺
