  • Some places around the world have become must-sees for millions of tourists, but we rarely know what secrets they are hiding. The Roman Colosseum used to be nearly twice as large as it is today! Its architectural glory started to dim down in 217 when a fire struck the upper parapets and much of the building's interiors. The downfall continued with an earthquake, and a big part of the Colosseum's outer ring was damaged. What else happened to the Colosseum and other famous monuments of architecture worldwide?     I thought the entire outer shell was gone from years of outsiders coming in and taking the marble after the empire collapsed.

      Not just that. The area the colosseum is standing on is earthquake prone. So a lot of the walls were breaking due to it, and then the outsiders came in took pieces of it. Even the Vatican was built by pieces of the colosseum

    Maybe the newest layer, but they are pretty cool ruins built over even cooler ruins, which you will find built over walls of such complexity that we couldn't build them, today...

    If you are headed to Lebanon to visit the temples there you will be disappointed if you use this video's directions. The blinking red orb is situated very close to Mecca, KSA. Mecca to Beirut is approx 1500 miles.

    Other obvious ruins in this vein include Prambanan and Borobudur in Indonesia (in Java). The biggest ruins being around Angkor Wat in Cambodia. Far too much to cover in one video.

    The claim that the "fractured" look of the Colosseum dates to damage sustained in 217 (repaired by 317, but not to its former state) contradicts the model of Rome circa 325 AD at the Museum of Roman Civilization. That model is considered a masterpiece of scholarship regarding the high point of the city's development. Does anyone out there know what the stadium actually looked like in 325 AD?
