  • 'The Wild Horses of Newbury' was shot by me, Mark Carroll, very early on a single morning in February 1996 at the building site of the Newbury Bypass. (UK) This controversial road was to cut through some beautiful, ancient English countryside and had met with massive and radical direct action protests, hence the number of security guards. The whole episode only lasted a few minutes.. nothing was staged. The security guards and police had circled two very old Oak trees and were preparing to chop them down , when two scruffy, seemingly wild horses appeared and began to interfere with the felling. One of the horses even confronted one of the police horses.....
    This film was made by Mark Carroll and first distributed by 'Undercurrents'
    It has also been broadcast on Channel 4.

    Between the cutting down of those magnificent trees and the appearance of the horses, the scene couldn't have been more sad or ethereal.

      @@woadboy hi, on the outside walls of the archives they've got blown up photos with some text panels about road protests. Your video is showing with another one in a loop on a small TV screen with two headphones for the commentary.

    This is so real and all the environment demonstration should have been here to stop it instead of stopping traffic in London. They should show this in all the schools. Tress should be protected around the world ! So sad when an ancient tree gets cut down. Well done for filming it. You deserve to get an Oscar mate.

    I don’t think it’s an accident that the two wild horses appeared there. To me this is very spiritual. This is the true magic of our world. This is a sign, and people need to take this seriously. Feels like the last remaining truth in this world is under attack, and we are letting it happen. Where have all the heroes gone? I’m absolutely disgusted with the smirk on the faces of the workers. They are spitting on native European heritage. Although the official academic sources do not acknowledge this truth, these trees are sacred to the native European people who’ve inhabited this land for thousands of years,

      I've never seen horses behave in such a way. They moved in sync towards the scene of destruction, totally in sync with the alarm and primordial need to protect.
      I can't recall million dollar trained show horses behaving like this - whether during olympic equestrian events, or anywhere else. What a profoundly moving awe-inspiring video. I feel so insignifcant in comparison, bless!

    It's not by chance those horses turned up...nor that you were there to film them. It was a bringing together of extraordinary souls for a very strong purpose...and whoever brought you and those magical horses together that morning, knew exactly what they were doing....For no other person could have captured or interpreted their message any better than you have here. A Spiritual Message that was formed that day to rise above The Destruction, creating an Army of Saviours.

    One of the most powerful omens captured on film. There was a deep communication between the wild horse and the police horse-two parts of our split nature, talking, recognizing each other. The horses no doubt felt the shaking of the earth under their hooves from afar and came running over, concerned. What have we done, oh what have we done.

    Stunning and very profound. Excellent use of Terry Oldfield's music and the narration is restrained and meaningful, never mawkish. The clearly unstaged, agitated body language of the 'wild' horse towards the police horse is quite remarkable. An incredibly moving documentation of a shameful episode in England's recent history. Thank you.

    What did the Black Horse say to the Horse with a Cop on its back, when they touched heads, by the Black Horse rearing up reaction it feels to me that the pain of total control was felt by the Black Horse in that moment, feeling the subjugation of the Horse with an abuser on its back! Mark, this is the most extraordinary and moving piece of film I have ever seen. Do you know how to send it to James Cameron, or Stephen Spielberg, for this should be the basis of the strongest film ever created about what we are doing to the planet, how we have lost touch with ourselves and how the animals themselves are trying to tell The Destroyers to stop! It is the saddest yet most beautiful film I have ever, EVER seen. Thank you for caring.. x

    They are the private security guards!
    There were many demonstrations against the building of this road. Protesters had made camps in the trees and were throwing themselves in front of chainsaws. The government hired thousands of private security guards to stop the protesters interupting the chopping of the trees. On this morning, the security guards you can see surrounded the whole area of trees that the roadbuilders were wanting to chop down. They were there to stop the protesters getting in

    I like the idea that these two horses are a manifestation of Odin's eight legged horse Sleipnir, sent as an omen, and I hate to diminish the majesty of the experience, but I have to ask... did you ever find out whose horses they were? Did the neighbor accidentally leave a gate open? Maybe some fence needed repair and the horses got out?

    • @woadboy
      @woadboy  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The whole area was in chaos, with many diggers and machinery are security moving around. Hedges had been bulldozed and gates removed. The horses though obviously not truly wild seemed to have broken free for a while at least. We never found out whose horses they were, they disappeared as quickly as they appeared.

    Both of those horse were distressed. They revealed more humanity than the security guards and certainly more than the planning authority who ordered it, who, no doubt, will be informed at some level, of what has happened to the rainforest, yet fail to acknowledge they are doing the same thing. One despairs at the intellectual capacity of our leaders. There is only way one way: to engage in politics ourselves lest, as Plato pointed out, we shall be ruled by those of lower intelligence than we.
