John Trudell On Leonard Peltier

  • On a Portland Oregon Public Access program, Native American Spoken Word Artist John Trudell discusses the circumstances and aftermath of a 1975 fire fight on the Pine Ridge Reservation which took the lives of two FBI agents.
Subsequent trials found two Native Americans not guilty due to self defense and another, Leonard Peltier guilty, as the judge refused to allow the same defense.
"They are not going to let him out; that has never been their intention. The government had an operative, not an informant or a snitch. An operative is someone the put amongst you to direct activities. I think there was a government operative amongst that level of AIM leadership, ....(who)wasn't necessarily a part of the AIM leadership, but had access to the AIM leadership."
"This operative is behind this firefight in Oglala, where these agents were killed, and I think this operative is behind the murder of Anne Mae Aquash. And the way that it appears to me is that I think that this operative manipulated both sides against each other on the firefight thing, as part of a larger plan. But the plan went wrong and the agents got killed."
Leonard was just recently denied parole, his next parole hearing being in 2024, when he will be 79 years old. He has been in prison since 1977.

I have 2 thoughts on the operatives and informants inside of AIM.
Bob Robideau told Peter Matthiessen, in 1981, that while the shootout was taking place, the elusive "red pickup" rolled down the hill from a position behind the agents, stopped right next to them, and opened fire at point-blank range. Bob would not tell Peter who shot the agents, but whoever was riding in that pickup truck, chances are good that they were agent provocateurs. I think the Feds may have known that the agents were killed by one of their operatives, which is why they covered this up, ignored esculpatory evidence, made the red pickup turn into a "red and white and orange and white van," and went hard after Leonard. I originally thought that the shooter may have been Jimmy Eagle, but, from what I remember, he wasn't in Oglala on that day. Or was he?
I think that it is also clear, now, that the FBI indeed DID have key informants and/or operatives in leadership positions within AIM. All one has to do is take a moment and think about it, and the identity of this person will be clearly revealed. I'm talking about the so-called 'Leader' who was never around when anything of deep significance happened, who later went on to have a Hollywood movie career, went to Nicaragua (on behalf of the US State Department) to denounce the struggle of the Nicaraguan People, and was later invited to testify before Congress. 'Enemies of the State' aren't usually afforded those types of privileges. They're usually railroaded into prison, or they are murdered.

I would suggest other books but you would consider them ''biased'' because they reveal the true intentions of the FBI when dealing with non-white organizations. Wounded knee is an area on the Pine Ridge reservation in South Dakota. A massacre occurred at wounded knee in the 1800s. Then in the 1970s an uprising but turned into another government attack. In 1970s Annie Mae was used in the end to wrap up the governments case. Best I can do as there is a lot to the story. You have to do some reading written by Leonard Peltier himself. Then go from there.

@NJburbsSeeker Sure, unlike you I"m open to all points of view, even ones that I disagree with. It has valid points but I disagree with one claim. The claim that the FBI were ''investigating''Jeanette Bissonette's murder is total bullshit. The FBI never investigated any muder on PIne Ridge because they were involved in almost all of the over 61 unsolved murders.I don't think it's ok for anyone to murder a person but a person does have a right to self-defense n that's what happend with Peltier.

Had Peltier killed them then it was justified as I've said before. Would you welcome two robbers and invite them to tea if they broke into your home? No, you would blow them away immediately and that's within your right as a property owner. Why not join up n' serve?

      Yeah, "witnesses."
If that's the case, then why was Agent David Price walking around with a photo of Anna Mae's dead body, showing it to these so-called "witnesses" that you refer to, and telling them that if they didn't cooperate, they would end up like Anna Mae? Why did the original ME, who processed her body, fail to find the gunshot wound in her head? And why did they remove her hands?
If Price didn't rape and murder her, himself, then chances are good that he knows who did.
This country is ruled by ruthless cold-hearted criminals, and if you can't admit that, then YOU'RE part of the problem!

@lovedlakoda I have no reason to "fight" with you. Your level of education reveals itself in your ramblings. I've told you where to research the facts of the case. The transcripts are available online duh. Red Tomahawk murdered Sitting Bull, for whatever reason it doesn't matter. FACT remains both were American Indians of the same tribe. Not sure of the names of the Indian Police who murdered Crazy Horse but I'm sure their names are available. Fighting a war you will never win defines insanity.

@Ojibway65 Peltier is guilty as the facts of the case and his own mouth. Do your research as you have at your finger tips the greatest library ever to exist.

@lovedlakoda It still wont change a thing..Peltier fell apart because of acid and a bad trip..,,What will not be in that book is the statements she had made up here in Canada about what Peltier did and saying he killed the agents..What i have is fact not fiction..We have had our battles and we fought one enemy not each other.so we won...no one was murdered in cold blood or killed by our own, Peltier will never be set free except when he dies.bury his heart in wounded knee in a box.
