Re: the Atari 1400XLD you're looking for -- there was actually no such thing. The two computers Atari had planned to introduce in 1983 were the 1400XL and 1450XLD. But then the video game crash happened, Atari went bankrupt, and was sold to Jack Tramiel, who had no interest in putting those models in production. So only prototypes exist, and by now probably all of the remaining ones are already in the hands of collectors.
To be honest: while it may be a classic it still is dogshit compared to anything that came afterwards in the series. I wish somebody would've had the courage to try PS V at the risk of tainting the legend that is PS IV. Also Wikipedia must be lying as there is no way that PS IV came out over 2 decades ago.
Unfair standard to hold that game up to, if I may say. While I agree with you, it was pioneering a lot of stuff. The same can be said of Mega Man 1, but I'd still tell people to play it.
Wouter de Valk I was instantly disappointed that Apple II style case wasn't for some kind of Apple motherboard (PC compatible but fully licensed to run Apple's os-es for the Apple fan boys.
"Build"?! You mean: Stick together 5 off-the-shelf items and call it your build. This is so lame! Every ordinary pc can be a "Hackintosh" by installing (hacked) OSX on it. Those pc build videos make me pissed off. I did those kind of "builds" when I was 8 years old. It is just too simple.
I'm in the process of reading the book he got on retro game development, and if you're a C64 fan running Windows it's a great read! The author uses an IDE that's like Visual Studio for Commodore systems - it's a character designer, screen designer, and a bazillion other bells and whistles I haven't figured out yet. Sadly no Linux port (yet), but I don't mind booting into Windows for awhile to play with this thing. And the book walks you through a bunch of projects, with really detailed instructions. I definitely don't think David would need it, cuz obviously he created an awesome C64 game without it, but for C64 newbies like me it's a great starting point.
In general this kind of videos make admire old and retro tech. And how much effort but in it , it's a rare experience to share something never been exposed to. Just awesome
Considering it's intaking through the floor with only very small feet raising it up, I'm willing to bet the airflow will be very poor. It does look pretty cool, though.
David I just wanted to let you know that your videos always are fun to watch and make my day when you come out with a new one. thanks for being such a great You Tuber that I can watch and learn from. I don't have any old computers to work on like you do... but I know someday I'll get a Tandy, Commodore, Sinclair, or an old Apple someday and I'll be able to know how to fix it because of you. Thanks
Hey David, the keyboard in that Apple II chassis is called a Poker keyboard, it's an actual product that you can buy, and has just been mounted in there, which is why it feels like a finished product. I'm typing on one now, actually. ;)
That watchman brings back memories... my dad had one- my brother and sister and I used to crowd around it on drives to my grandmas house, continually adjusting the antennae trying to hold the signal while we watched stuff like knight rider.
What if you made a Hackintosh with that Apple II chassis? I'm kinda experienced with Hackintoshing already so I might be able to help if you actually do it.
exactly what i thought when i saw it: "slap some compatible hardware in there and build the most stylish hackintosh ever" - and get replacement keycaps for the "win" keys.
the thing is that it says "win" on the keys because this built in keyboard is just a standard mechanical PC keyboard. i think the order of the CRTL, ALT and CMD/WIN key needs to be changed for mac use as well. yes, it is purely cosmetical and does not change the useabillity but can be irritating if someone is picky about it - like, why do i have keys with a big old windows logo on my laptop keyboard when i am not even using windows on it ?
Only guy who would feel embarrassed about offering money for donations. Great content and a class act, David. Keep up the good work! hope you find your missing pieces.
Karcus Korpse your quite right, unlike a CD that plays non-stop from beginning to end, a cassette tape has a physical limit to it. Sorry, just had to say it. LOL
How exciting to see that Casio keyboard. I had that model as a child and it had a wonderful feature that most keyboards did not have. You can set it into a 'quasi' recording mode where you can press the keys to play a song as slowly as you like. Then you can swtich modes and go through the song you just played setting the duration of each note, to create your own replayable demos.
I swear David is trolling us now with these little itty bitty pieces of tape covering up addresses. I mean, the tape is so damned cheap, you would think to just slap a big ol' piece on. Instead, I picture David carefully and painstakingly using an exacto knife to cut all these fine pieces of tape. Again, I think we're being trolled now. There is absolutely no reason for this method. haha Oh well...I continue to love this channel!
Oh! 8-inch disks! I remember those. They were used in a 8080 computer known as a Commfile which I programmed for in one of my first regular jobs. I think from memory, they used CP/M. They came with either one or two 8-inch drives and no HDD, but all the ones I worked with were dual drive versions. I remember getting into the machine code assembler and making my own disk copy program. The standard disk copy program didn't copy the system tracks, and for a particular application I needed to copy those too, so I wrote my own program to do the job.
*ATTENTION:* The Apple ][ case was a scam. The cases are three months overdue and the project starter has vanished along with the $30,000 he conned out of unwitting enthusiasts
@3:22 that seems to be a style of packaging done by many overseas couriers. When my sister and her family ship stuff back and forth to the Philippines it often looks like that.
It's absurd how technology evolves doesn't it? I guess that in the future there will no physical hard drives, all of our stuff will be saved on "cloud".
Hi David, For the Casio Boombox/Keyboard, you inserted the cassette backwards, the tape direction arrow indicates a classic left to right direction but your right side spool was already full. Happy New Year and thanks for the great content.
That Apple II case is genius. I have always wanted to put a modern setup in an old metal IBM case. I can understand chronology. When doing gun history videos, I will wait until I buy something to show a predecessor, or I have bought guns just for video ideas.
One thing that wasn't mentioned: the Master System actually has 2 cartridge ports. One on the top for regular cartridges. And one on the front for the card based games (these are very similar to the TG16/PC-Engine cards). The 3D glasses use the card slot for the glasses themselves, and then the games themselves have to be cartridges. They actually work quite well considering the graphic limitations of the time.
To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand the 8-bit guy. The humour is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of DIP chips most of the jokes will go over a typical viewer’s head.

He developed a game for the Commodore 64 called Planet X2, and he's making a version of the game for MS-DOS, so he needs a bunch of floppies to put the game on so he can sell it.
I love my Master System as I was the odd kid, everyone had the NES and I went with the SMS. Phantasy Star is a Holy Grail for the system, Spy vs Spy and Miracle Warriors are good games. The 3D Glasses are an amazing piece of 80s tech!
Well, to be fair the Master System wasn't exactly popular in the US, and I think David is also more of a computer guy. That did surprise me a bit though.
Exactly (I'm the one that donated that). Phantasy Star was not well known in the US until the Mega Drive/Genesis games. The Master System was almost completely unknown in the US, because Nintendo had something like 95% of the market in those days. It did much better in Europe, and in Brazil the situation was reversed (the Master System was the dominant system there until the mid 90's). The only way you would be familiar with Phantasy Star is if you were a big Sega fan. Not everyone was.
OMG!!! *EVERYONE* had a copy of Hunchback II. At least on the C=, but it was cloned to many other machines too, so I even had it on my Sinclair. (it wasn't great, at least the Sinclair version - but came in many Greatest Hits packs, which Ocean did a lot of) Phantasy Star seemed to be on the shelves of everyone I knew with a console (they would always be Sega, I didn't know anyone with Atari or Nintendo) but I don't remember seeing it being played. I suspect it's another thing that came bundled either with the console here in the UK, or as part of a games pack, where there are enough "good" titles in there for it to be worth the price, and a bunch of throw away titles as a bonus.
2:17 That nintendo switch looks great!
More like the "Casio Switch." haha
IsmaelHG | Hardware y montaje de ordenadores! Best comment so far.
You mean Joy-Cons?
xD
This Casio should be called Casio Switch
"If I see one more bent DIP pin, you're grounded."
And thus I fell out of my chair laughing.
pun intended
Linksbro tech mafia threat right there
If he really meant it, then he should have sent an anti-static wrist band.
By grounded like the ground pin for power.
very clever lol

VWestlife HI VWestlife!!!!
ooohhhhhhh!!!!!!! Busted!!!!!!
fake
#Exposed
The made the 1400 xl though
13:30 phantasy star is one of the most famous SMS games, it's pretty awesome
Ricardo Vidal Yup... it was the Final Fantasy 7 of the Master System. Cost $70 at launch...
Back in the day, I bought a used SMS just to play Phantasy Star. Truly one of the great games of the era.
The way he said "MAN WHAT IS IN THESE THINGS?!?!?!" was funny. I would love to see that as a meme one day with his face in it!!!
Mubeen Ahmed That’s a pretty dank meme.
8:12
“These are actually pretty hard to find these days.”
He says while standing in front of a box of 3000 of them.
Very funny
Yeah, let's get that Planet X3 game going! ;)
if it runs on DOS, it should be called Planet x86
Good lord.
@Anders Enger Jensen
yes Plante X3 for Dos :D btw where in norway you from westCoast(Bergen) or? :D Norsk her og :D
Those floppies were amazing! You guys hit the motherlode!
StigDesign1 Nesten, østlandet, nord for Oslo. ;)
Phantasy Star is the best rpg of sega MS.
It’s the reason I bought an SMS back in the day and became a Sega fan.
It's probably the best RPG of the entire 8-bit era
It's certainly in the top five RPGs for the Master System.
It is the best RPG of all time!
“Never heard of this one” - wow, I was shocked when he said that.
2:00 All I wanted for Christmas was a new episode of 8-Bit Keys. Looking forward to seeing you repair and review that Casio boom box in 2018.
I'm trying very hard not to make a joke about not having anywhere that will accept my 8 inch floppy.
i'd rather have a 5.25" hard drive than an 8" floppy
Your head is always seeking good "data". Park it will ya! :-D
i feel your pain
*picks up Phantasy Star*
- I'm not familiar with this one...
Me: NOOOOOO!!!! PLAY THAT IMMEDIATELY!!! Make your life better!
To be honest: while it may be a classic it still is dogshit compared to anything that came afterwards in the series. I know right? I'm just a little surprised he's unfamiliar with that series...
Agreed.
This was my reaction too
That Apple 2 clone's keyboard sounds amazing!
David, I get the impression you're not a massive fan, but - Twitter. A quick tweet will get you sorted almost every time.
That and Twitter DMs don't require you to solve a quantum physics equation just to get to the DM page, unlike TH-cam.
Yeah I would second this, just send out a tweet like 'Hey guys I'm doing a video on x, does anyone have a y they could send me for it?'
Mr Lurch - Yes!
That is EXACTLY what I was thinking!
+
Dr ROLFCOPTER!
Sb. born in '85 qualifies as a millenial? Really? I only tag people in their early twenties as such.
4:30 they are likely a cherry switch, the keycaps are also notable because they are PBT by the looks of it.
Build a Hackintosh in that "old" Apple 2 case!
Only if it's filled with AppleII emulators and software.
Wouter de Valk I was instantly disappointed that Apple II style case wasn't for some kind of Apple motherboard (PC compatible but fully licensed to run Apple's os-es for the Apple fan boys.
I approve of this idea! I * may * end up building a case like that down the line (as the actual one is too $$ for me).
L3 P3 it’s quite hard to build a hackintosh I’ve tried before but I failed ☹️

3000 Floppy disks?! I can hear LGR moan in pleasure all the way over here!
Did not need to imagine that lol gross.
love how he takes it personally when he rec's the Retro Programming book.
OMG, reminds me of all the DHL boxes from Asia when I used to work at Amazon! Great video
In general this kind of videos make admire old and retro tech. And how much effort but in it , it's a rare experience to share something never been exposed to.
Just awesome
I would totally use that apple 2 case as my main pc. It looks so cool i wonder if it has good airflow
Depends on how high of the deck the bottom feet lift it.
I’d buy one.
+ a cheap crt monitor
Considering it's intaking through the floor with only very small feet raising it up, I'm willing to bet the airflow will be very poor. It does look pretty cool, though.
And it is compact! I like it as well. I just think it is silly that they try to clone an Apple II.
You have some very generous fans. The shipping cost on those heavy packages must have been brutal. Awesome haul.
Seriously. Those big packages from overseas must have cost a literal fortune, probably $100 each (unless they still offer Sea Mail in Scandinavia.)
@4:24 - that looks like a Poker II keyboard that's been mounted in the case. Same layout and it comes with the same keycaps as standard.
All those discs so much Sony Mavica usage!
TheMr77469 they are standard floppy disks. Not exclusive to the sony mavica. In fact that was the only camera to pull that off properly.
Plus they are 720k disks, not 1.44M disks.
Hey David, the keyboard in that Apple II chassis is called a Poker keyboard, it's an actual product that you can buy, and has just been mounted in there, which is why it feels like a finished product. I'm typing on one now, actually. ;)
I'm a simple man. I see a Sega Master System, I click on the video.
*_stayed for Phantasy Star_*
It is hard to believe that you have never heard of the original Phantasy Star. It is an awesome, groundbreaking RPG. Get playing and enjoy! :)
Yeah, stuff from Europe is always obscure stuff ;)
Awesome donations!
Thanks for sharing!
Have a great 2018!
you know it's a good channel when you realise you forgot to ever subscribe and manage to watch every video on the day its uploaded anyway
Good video! But at 4:58 that 3rd cut out is meant for a power supply fan.
That watchman brings back memories... my dad had one- my brother and sister and I used to crowd around it on drives to my grandmas house, continually adjusting the antennae trying to hold the signal while we watched stuff like knight rider.
What if you made a Hackintosh with that Apple II chassis? I'm kinda experienced with Hackintoshing already so I might be able to help if you actually do it.
baaelectronics A gaming computer from 2018-1976
exactly what i thought when i saw it: "slap some compatible hardware in there and build the most stylish hackintosh ever" - and get replacement keycaps for the "win" keys.
Windows keys could technically be Apple keys because Windows is mapped to Command keys and on old systems, Command and Apple were the same key!
the thing is that it says "win" on the keys because this built in keyboard is just a standard mechanical PC keyboard. i think the order of the CRTL, ALT and CMD/WIN key needs to be changed for mac use as well.

That original Master System is beautiful!
yay a 8 bit guy video!
The 8 bit kid nice username
Awesome, I'm going to settle in my chair now and watch this 10 times in a row. So excited.
It looks like you had the cassette in the wrong way. All the tape was on the right side and the front arrow on the door points to the right.
I also noticed it! The wheels usually spin counterclockwise, so the tape should be on the left :-)
I can't imagine him not seeing this but yup, it was definitely at the end. Leadertape showed as well :)
Love this channel born in the 70s this was my childhood..
That third fan hole is for a PSU.
That's what she said...lol
Only guy who would feel embarrassed about offering money for donations. Great content and a class act, David. Keep up the good work! hope you find your missing pieces.
Um, I think you forgot how a cassette tape works. Flip it over and play the other side, that side was at the end.
Usually you would hear "clicking" as the motor tries to work but prevented by some weird form of 80's physics.
Karcus Korpse your quite right, unlike a CD that plays non-stop from beginning to end, a cassette tape has a physical limit to it. Sorry, just had to say it. LOL
You got the best 3D master system game. The little maze guy hops up and down in an overhead view and it looks so cool, like he's coming right at you!
Someone please donate a large warehouse to David so he has space to store the donations.
I never thought I found myself watching all the 8-bit unboxing's on one sitting :D
720kb per floppy disk? That means all those in the six boxes will have no more than 2.16Gb!
Love the sound of those cherry MX blue keys
"I don't know if these games will work on my NTSC C64..."
NEXT EPISODE: "A PAL C64!"
:)
lurkerrekrul i guess you can say....
its a great PAL
Happy New Year David, Thanks for the unboxing fun!
Does that iBook Graphite actually work?
Most Probe from the shape on the outside it looks like it is working
if it doesn't, I hope he restores it for a video
First video I've watched in the new year. This will be a good year.
Did you try the putting the tape in the Casio boombox in the other way? Looks like it was put in backwards in the video.
Kevbo Kev it shows he cares.
He marked the address and taped it in.

Time to buy a bigger house, David! You clearly need it for of your 8-bit stuff.
I think that he need airplane garage for this donations.
Don't you meen a wharehouse.
InternetMask dont you mean a hangar
Don't you mean a universe? 😂
dispatchnig vomitory probably.
8 bit guy..hes genuinely genuine. Happy New Year Sir
*ATTENTION:* The Apple ][ case was a scam. The cases are three months overdue and the project starter has vanished along with the $30,000 he conned out of unwitting enthusiasts
It's sad, really. It had such potential.
The original Phantasy Star is awesome. I still have mine. Think of it like Sega’s version of Final Fantasy
I got the best Xmas present EVER!!! A C64 in it's original box!!!!
Woah! that's pretty sweet, I'd have loved that
So did I, back in 1984
@3:22 that seems to be a style of packaging done by many overseas couriers. When my sister and her family ship stuff back and forth to the Philippines it often looks like that.
David, if you like RPGs you absolutely have to play Phantasy Star.
Putting a modern PC inside a old Apple case like that seems like a neat idea, I wouldnt even mind trying that with one of my G4/G5 towers
7:00 spot the cat :)
Alex Taradov the cat looks towards David with an expression saying wtf :-)
8-Bit unboxing is awesome! Keep it up!
Also, EVEN MORE BOXCEPTION
You never heard of phantasy star? The first RPG I ever played
Oh, dude, that Apple II case looks AMAZING!!!!
The thing I want to send you most is a box cutter.
My first pc was a Tandy 1000 and when you brought it up it brought me back.
Phantasy Star is a futuristic RPG
The iBook Guy returns to his roots! "Vista... Looking out for You."
3:21 boxception.
I love this guy, he's so wholesome. And everytime tries some arkward joke it just gets better and funnier.
Ha the mini sd card in my tablet probably has more storage capacity then the 6 boxes of floppys.
It would take roughly 100,000 DSDD floppy disks to equal the microSD card I have in my phone, so.... Yeah...
Anonymous Freak 128gb?
It's absurd how technology evolves doesn't it?
I guess that in the future there will no physical hard drives, all of our stuff will be saved on "cloud".
miniSD? Wow, where do you find one of those?
anajay78 mini SD or micro SD I have a 128 micro sd
Hi David, For the Casio Boombox/Keyboard, you inserted the cassette backwards, the tape direction arrow indicates a classic left to right direction but your right side spool was already full. Happy New Year and thanks for the great content.
Put a Titan X in that Apple II clone.
Even better, a Titan Xp.
That Apple II case is genius. I have always wanted to put a modern setup in an old metal IBM case. I can understand chronology. When doing gun history videos, I will wait until I buy something to show a predecessor, or I have bought guns just for video ideas.
0:09 how do you do fellow kids?
I don’t get it?
Warren Davis are you saying that because of the Rick and Morty shirt?
yes
Warren Davis ohhhhh, right ha ha
Two of my favorite RPGs of all time. Amazing gift.
I don't pump iron, I pump UPS Boxes.
Love your videos. They are really the highlight of the day in some sometimes.

Phantasy Star is great.

You should send the Apple 2 case to Linus Tech Tips! They would have something for their "sleeper" PC series! It would be so cool!!!
They use actual vintage cases and then do the needed modifications themselves. But it would make for a good episode.
Yeah true. But I agree, it would make a good episode.
maybe he did and that is their next sleeper PC Margaret
An Altair 8800 would be the best case for a sleeper build
Watch LGR, he did that. AND IT CAN RUN CRYSIS
As a SMS collector can I just say... I nearly fell out of bed when I saw a 'free' boxed Phantasy Star. David, that game is worth > $100 by itself.
To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand the 8-bit guy. The humour is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of DIP chips most of the jokes will go over a typical viewer’s head.
Okay Morty
Did people really believe that to watch R&M you had to be really smart?
It almost feels like trolling but I don't really know at this point.
Yup, for the IQ standards in US&A.
You must be smarter than the Rick and Morty fans to understand the 8 Bit Guy
If you seriously think humans are funny, there's no hope for you.
Sorry, I had to edit this: @Zak "have a smart intelligents to understand" really? Did I read that correctly?
No, It is ok, you are watching 8-bit guy. You are ok, just keep watching.
I look forward to these every month; the coming C64 I'm sure will be mind blowing.
*sees rick and morty shirt*
Ah, so I see how you’ve become so intelligent.
I love the retro case, and pretty much all the retro tech.
do your unboxings live! voice-overs are so 2017
HAPPY NEW YEAR 8-BIT!
I wish I was a youtuber to get free stuff like that.

Not all Rick and Morty fans are obnoxious.
TO BE FAIR
i don’t understand how people still think making rick and morty jokes are funny
What joke? Which guy?
lol :)
That keybored boom box is so cool! Can't wait to see a video on that!
