Wow.. From a Canadian, I thank you for the video. I was considering going electric with a similar model, and clearly, not up for the job in any way. Cheers!
IF anyone is here to see it take on the "end of driveway" snow : its about 4:15 on the clip!!. (I am gobsmacked that you could do that driveway with this snowblower!! very impressed). lol, I would think with your driveway you are definitely in the caregory of needing a 2 stage snowblower. Thanks so much for posting this clip. I am on the fence as to whether I should get a one stage or two stage (its about 8-10 car driveway (double width i.e. 2x5) ). ourbiggest issue is that our aluminim roof will deposit HUGE piles of snow onto our driveway after about half a day of melting a bit after a big snowfall -it is really dense and packed (and more annoying : when it falls off it completely blocks our exit for cars from the garage!!). Thanks again for this clip - great video
Hi Burton, I'm now in the Minneapolis area -- plenty of snow but much smaller driveway better suited to the 1-stage. A few neighbors have the 2-stage EGO but for twice the price, I'd rather get out and make a pass every 8 inches to keep it within the capabilities of the 1 pass. Your aluminum roof situation though could be a good reason to get the two stage. My two 5AH batteries have proven to have plenty of juice for most jobs, recharge in 30 minutes, and are still holding charge well after 4 years of heavy use summer (EGO lawnmower) and winter.
Thanks for the reviews on so many of the EGO Gen1 snow blower. I hope you will be reviewing the Gen2 with a steel auger or the 2-stage snow blower this coming winter.

Thanks for the video, it was very interesting. I live in New Hampshire and we get some pretty deep snow here and I don't imagine that an electric machine would be a good fit for me. I'll stick with my 10 horsepower gas burner.
I do NOT miss using the snow vacuum cleaner (as I called it) for times like this -heavy wet snow. Switched to a 2 stage and haven't looked back. What used to take me 3+ hours of that bump and grind nonsense at 1:22 esp with the plow ridge, my 2 stage ariens can get it all done in 30 min. If you're in a high snow state, imo the electric is good for raised up walkways and decks that a 2 stage can't access.
I take a shovel and make straight up and down cuts every 12 to 16 inches apart in front of the machine and it works great. Only takes a few extra minutes and by making the small breaks the snow blower doesn't have to strain as hard and you'll get better run times out of the batteries also.
Great tip! Will try that next time. You might be interested in this new video that shows how many pounds the little bugger will toss in one charge of the batteries. Its 7800 pounds! How much snow can the EGO+ 1-stage snow blower remove on one charge?
Last year we had a snow Joe electric, the largest model they made and it ended up busted up by the end of the year. This year we have a two stage snowblower and I'm glad we did because our first storm we got well over 30" of snow.
These little battery powered snow blowers have about the same power as 120 volt 15 amp corded electric units. Under 2 hp (1200-1500 watts). There's only so much mass of snow they can launch into the air per unit time before they've exhausted their power budget. Gas power machines are 6-12 hp. So 3 to 6 times more powerful. A corded electric corded machine on a 240 volt 30 amp AC circuit could match an internal combustion engine machine. Reproducing that with a battery machine is possible, but it would require a very substantial battery. The power produced by an 8 hp from an engine for 20 minutes is the equivalent of a 40 Ah (ish) EGO battery. Calculation: 7 hp * 750 watts/hp * 20 min * 1 hour / 60 min = 1750 Wh, at 56 volts, that's 31 Ah, divide that by battery discharge and electric motor efficiency (not great at low voltage) of, say, 0.75, and you get about 40 Ah of necessary battery capacity. Good job measuring the snow density and estimating the total mass. If you compute the initial velocity of the trajectory necessary to move the snow the desired height and distance it should then be possible to combine that with the snow density to come up with a power estimate necessary to move snow at a given rate (mass/second).
@@foam27 It just volts, amps combining to yield power. Power is power is power. There's not much to know, but the snowblower sales season is beginning so no surprise you commented *8* months after my comment! The ego-2 two stage has a 56 volt / 7.5 ah battery. So it can work through the same max load as a 7hp ICE machine for about 5 minutes on one battery. The machine ships with two batteries, so double that runtime worst case, max load, as delivered. In non worst case conditions you'd see longer. Just like an ICE machine will consume less gas when running in lighter snow (throttle position governed based on engine load). We have no clue what power is necessary for the video you posted other than that fluffy snow will use less power. It looks like light fluffy snow. We'd need an amp measurement or reporting of the battery runtime to estimate that.

I do have a Craftsman LT1000 with snowblower on the front end, and used it for 5 seasons. It worked well, but have found the little EGO does the job, and with no maintenance and a tiny footprint in the garage, I'm now using the Craftsman for mowing only.
@@pearsonjc well now you’re right about the maintenance on gasoline powered anything ,,, I have an older John Deere 212 with a heavy snow plow works great chains on the rear tires the harbor freight winch to raise and lower the blade electrically right in the middle of plowing it stopped moving about a week ago looks like probably both belts are going to have to be replaced and the variator is old and worn it’s going to need rebuilt shammed up some bushings probably etc. the two belts for the drive and the variator I’m going to end up spending about $ 300 or $400 on that and they can’t even get to it for a little while because they’re behind and backed up so now I’m gonna be using this little ego for at least another two weeks,,, if the snowblower dry lubricant spray stuff for the shoot and the auger actually works the way they say it does I may end up keeping it I don’t know yet. It’ll be worth it in someways just to have it as a back up if for the places the tractor can’t go also,,,however it will be dependent upon it’s 🎭 performance🎭 after the lubricant.
I coated mine with silicone spray when I first purchased it. Warm it up and dry it out. Coat it with the silicone spray and it'll help. This year I bought the 2-stage and I still use the single stage more.
Hey If you don’t get the upgraded ECO 2 Stage then you really should look into a older Simplicity, Ariens or Toro models By the time you get one row thru the heavy snow it will be nightfall.
"I'm thinking about get one of these" Why? I don't understand the appeal. Less power for more money and runs for less time. And not really up to the job. These things are toys compared to a good gas blower.

Hello Tell me you have a backup two stage snowblower because your property is very large and you get way too much snow for this inadequate single stage snowblower. Now if you replace it with the ECO 2 stage ok but you really should get a backup gas 2 stage snowblower Ariens, Toro or Simplicity. It’s ok to experiment but that much continuous physical work brings problems to the human body.
Good points. I do have a 2-stage gas (Craftsman lawn tractor with attachment) that is of course better for heavy snows like in this video. This year we didn't have any such deep snow and the little EGO was fine. But I do treat the snow-blowing as a kind of exercise!

As much as that looks easier than shoveling for sure. It makes me happy to have a 27in wide gas blower with a 23in tall opening.those 2 batteries can probably do the whole driveway if it's light powdery snow and less than 6 inches tho.hope you have an already charged set of spare batteries if you get more than that
You are right, with light snow 6inches or less the 2 batteries can do the entire thing (as shown in a video from last year). I do have a 42 inch 2-stage gas riding blower (add-on to a Craftsman garden tractor) but I hadn't converted it (from being a lawn mower) when this storm hit. They had predicted 8 inches but we got 20. Had I known this ahead of time I would have gotten the gas blower ready to go.
The trick with a battery system is buy the same brand for everything; leaf blower, trimmer, lawn mower, chainsaw, snowblower, etc. You accumulate compatible batteries and chargers. I have enough batteries and chargers (2 standard and 1 rapid) now to keep anything going continuous. Ego specifically designs their battery bays to accept 2.0 ah all the way up to 7.5 ah batteries. Stihl does not do this. Ryobi seems to change battery formats constantly. Like John I also have a 42inch Craftsman blower attachment for my 24hp Sears rider, and a 20" 2-stage gas blower, but I would use this Ego for most snows. Faster than a 2-stage for light stuff, light, maneuverable, no gas, no starter fluid, no sucking exhaust for an hour, no 6 hours per season setting up and taking down a rider mower snow thrower attachment.

Get a two stage gas blower and you’ll save a ton of money and save a ton of time. The two stage EGO is a great blower but you’ll need to buy at least six batteries with higher amp rating at $350 each for your long driveway. Until the price comes down dramatically on these units then, for houses like yours, gas is the way to go. My opinions are just that. Thanks!
I wish I could justify the Ego 2 stage. My 10 year old gas 2 stage works just fine, but it's stinky, and sometimes hard to start. It's my only gas tool left, the rest are Ego.
Yeah if I had that size driveway I’d definitely would have a gas blower. I have a battery operated snowblower. I have the snow Joe hybrid and I can definitely say for deep snow the battery doesn’t work that great. But when I plug it in for the deep snow it works great, but at the same time my driveway is only a fraction of the size of yours. But good video thanks for the review

it measures 10 percent slope -- 1 foot elevation increase for every 10 steps forward. This is the same as 5.7 degrees. Not steep by skiing or hiking standards, but for running or biking (or pushing a snowblower) its pretty steep. You'd likely want to be in the lowest gear in your bike, for example.

Unfortunately electric snow blowers on batteries aren't there yet! We need better battery technology unless you want to spend hundreds and hundreds of dollars on batteries to swap out it just not worth it
I routinely clear my 100 yard long by 4-5 yards wide driveway on one charge of two 5.0AH batteries. The weight of snow removed is between 5,000 and 10,000 lbs of snow (see "pinned video"). These same batteries are used in the warm months to trim bushes, cut wood, blow leaves and mow grass. The batteries are expensive, but given their energy capacity, year round use, and the "maintenance free" utility, I think its a good deal.

Sorry but, that looks like more work than shoveling it. I'll take my 2 stage Toro 1028 any day over that. It would chew thru that 20 inches of snow effortlessly and throw it 50 feet away.
At 1:30 I stopped video. It was all I needed to see. What a complete waste of time. Buy a gas two stage, and be done in under an hour. My neighbor struggles with that same toy. I routinely start after him, and finish before him. Our driveways are the same size. It takes him two charge cycles to complete his as well. Neat idea that fails in a real world application.
I get your point, but this was pretty extreme snow for us. For our more typical snow (4-8 inches) it goes about as fast as I can walk, and so the whole driveway can be done in 30 minutes on a single charge. Check out this video: th-cam.com/video/Gy2odBS45lQ/w-d-xo.html
My neighbour has one of these. What a joke... Especially when the snow is wet and your driveway has a steep slope. My other neighbour has 2 or 3 stage gas snowblower, but it rarely snows enough to warrant taking it out... And it doesn't work much better when snow is wet either.

I couldn't work like that. I would use a shovel or get the right tool.
If you compute the initial velocity of the trajectory necessary to move the snow the desired height and distance it should then be possible to combine that with the snow density to come up with a power estimate necessary to move snow at a given rate (mass/second).
haha, you know nothing ;D

I think the power efficiency is so high on these units because of some amazing control system software that makes thousands of instantaneous adjustments per minute.
@@pearsonjc I watched! Impressive dedication. The EGO engineering team could take the mass of the snow combined with an estimate of how far it was thrown and estimate a power and efficiency number working from first principals. You need a small garden tractor with either a snow plow or a snowblower on the front of it
I do have a Craftsman LT1000 with snowblower on the front end, and used it for 5 seasons. It worked well, but have found the little EGO does the job, and with no maintenance and a tiny footprint in the garage, I'm now using the Craftsman for mowing only.

IMO the only way to go about dealing with snow with battery powered snowblowers is to go at it while the snow is less than 4-6 inches on the ground. Any higher and it'll struggle. Same with corded blowers. The only way to truly make it "a breeze" is to go with gas powered units when the snow is at it's highest.

Would a 108 lb woman be able to operate a snowblower? I have 4 neighbors, 2 of them young, snowblowers humming all around me after a 28 inch blizzard, but nobody helped until the very end of the day when the snow began to freeze up. I got the sidewalk done, about 1/3rd or so of the driveway done, and the turnabout done in 6 hours. I still had the rest of the driveway to finish, a VERY steep lonnng driveway, and the mailbox to dig out.
I can't straighten my back today. My right hand is shaking from shoveling. I also have osteoporosis and emphysema. I can't afford to hire anyone. I'm 56.
My God, I want to be able to NOT have to rely on anyone else ever again. Because they waited so long to help, and the snow froze up, my hill is now an icy mess . No sun today. Another storm coming. The second largest recorded storm in Allentown history with the storm we just had. I fell getting the mail and literally squatted and slid the rest of the way down the hill so I wouldn't fall again.

Ego SNT2405 2 stage is what you need FTW.
Things weak. It take me 2 minutes to kill this with my Honda 1332. Batteries will degrade too. Can’t go wrong with gas

I routinely clear my 100 yard long by 4-5 yards wide driveway on one charge of two 5.0AH batteries. The weight of snow removed is between 5,000 and 10,000 lbs of snow (see "pinned video").
