I have generalized anxiety disorder for 9 years. My problem was I was focusing too much inwardly, thus feeding my stored trauma with more attention so it grew stronger, and I unconsciously controlled my breathing, not allowing my body to breathe naturally, thus being more tense. I needed to practice exteroceptive mindfulness during walking meditation and allow my body to breathe naturally, instead of forcing it to be deep and slow, I allowed it to be shallow and fast without judging, and naturally my body would release the tension and become relaxed. Balance between exteroceptive and interoceptive mindfulness is important. The teaching of non-self is helpful because when I became less aware of myself, the stored trauma weakened. I learned to focus more on external things. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy helps me when I practice walking meditation. I shift my eyes quickly to another bird or tree or another sight to bring back my attention outwardly. Thank you Thay and Plum Village. And thanks to Andrew Huberman for explaining intero and extero mindfulness and EMDR. I hope this helps anyone 🙏😄🌻

Thank you, this is interesting. There are many places to focus our attention. We also have the capacity to exaggerate the responses to perceptions, (real or imagined). Our minds can magnify the intensity of stimuli based upon triggers/karmic seeds.
I believe Thay is directing us to intentional seed watering, focusing the cultivation new sprouts🌱 of awareness by consciously choosing new behavioral responses rather than choosing old familiar neurological pathways. New can be scary too!
It's great you found a "middle way" that works for you!💌 Thank you for sharing Buddha-to-be 🙏🏼💕

Me neither, but it's fascinating how physiology, biology (plants & animals), bio-chemistry, psychology, etc., are influenced by loving kindness and compassion.
Some people love devotional practices, some prefer austere practices, others find & integrate their own path, ... I often feel discouraged, but I do see progress. Transforming "unwholesome" karmic seeds that have overgrown my mind~ heart garden is real work!!
Blessings to all the gardeners! 🙏🏼🌱🌷🌻🍀

A big thanks to Thay. Please allow me to interrupt. I feel every Buddhist should know what I have to say. I do research on how Buddhism disappeared in Bihar. I realized it never disappeared from Bihar. Buddhists simply failed to research Indian Buddhism. They looked at Buddhism through the sphere of their own cultures searching for only the Buddha. Buddha had a myriad of names in different villages according to his teachings there. Example. His favorite teaching was 'Lust and desire causes pain. Remove lust and desire, and pain is removed'. Translated into Bihari (where the Buddha story took place) it is DHUKH HARAN meaning to remove dukha. Three dozen villages pray to DUKH HARAN Baba. Its clear that DUKH HARAN Baba is none other than the Buddha. Problem is Buddhists are searching only for the Buddha. In the real Vaishali the Buddha begged for alms. The locals there pray to 'BHIKHAINI' Baba (Beggar Baba). Bhikhaini was mispronounced by Buddhists as Bhikshu. Who is BHIKHAINI Baba. The Buddha no doubt. But people are searching for a man called Buddha. In the real Vaishali, in Beluha the Buddha suffered a sickness and felt he had grown old. The locals pray to 'BURHA' Baba (Old Baba). Who is BURHA Baba. The Buddha no doubt. In the real Vaishali the Lichavies pressurized Buddha not to die. They trailed him to Bandagawan pressurizing him not to die. To put pressure in Hindi is DABESHWAR. Three dozen villages around the stupa where Buddha gave the Lichavies his patra, the villagers pray to Baba 'DABESHWAR NATH' meaning the man who won the pressurizing game. It was the the Buddha no doubt as he gave the Lichavies his patra and succeded in sending them back. But Buddhists are searching for the Buddha. In Pidhauli (Vaishali) the local deity is Bardiha Baba. Bardiha means the Baba who didn't allow us to stay where he was staying. Bardiha Baba is the Buddha no doubt because he didn't allow the crowd of Lichavies to stay with him in Bandagama. Forgive me for commenting out of the topic. I just wanted to impart this information to you. I have just videographed Maha Prajapati Gautamies Parinirvana temple. She is regarded the great grandmother of that are just as Buddha is regarded as grandfather (Baba).

The level of fear in the world right now is so high. There is so much fear and hate between countries and people, too much of US and THEM - but we all belong together and are depending of each other for our survival. It would be a fantastic thing if we could manage to explain this teaching about fear to all people around us. It could spread like rings on the water. We are an increasing amount of people who are conscious, right. Let's give it a try and let's hope that it is possible to have an impact on the fear in the world!!! ❤❤❤
Much love to Thay for being our wise leader and for giving us hope in these very dark times!🙏❤🙏

When I used to get bad anxiety attacks I learned to:
    1. Remember that you are safe and in a safe place.
    2. This attack will be like all the others so you know that you'll be okay.
    3. Splash cold water on your face and concentrate on that tactiile feeling or the feeling on your palms
    4. Remember that you aren't dying or having a heart attack even though it feels like it.
    5. Focus on your breathing.
    6. Picture a red "Stop Sign" in your head and Remember that YOU are in control.
    7. Don't catastrophize or worry, think good thoughts and SLOW down your thinking.
    8. Try to lay down and relax and go to sleep if you can.
These steps worked for me! Eventually you get used to the attacks and it gets easier to think "oh here comes one of those pesky attacks, I guess I'll just have ride it out again." Soon you'll be laughing at them.
I'm no expert and I truly hope this helps!
I love you all! God bless! ❤😀👃

I have been watching many videos of Thich Nhat Hahn for some years. I also have been reading his books for some time. He made me become a buddhist. I still remember the day I took the decision and my I cry of joy. The teacher touched my heart deeply with his compassion. His dharma talks watered the seed of mindfulness in me. When I listen to Thay, I feel how genuine he is and how pure.
I wish one day I can visit Plum Village and participate in a retreat with the sangha.

Its truly beautiful. My experience was different, the fear arized due to a traumatic choking event. Thus it came upon physically first, then became associated with adrenalin. So when adrenalin dumps due to high stress or an argument. It sometimes arizes from this, then the mind worries about the potential of it to rollercoaster. Thats the hardest part to stop. Deep breaths help, but its quite challenging. Rarely it happens now, but Its always a possibility.

he has worked in the Vietnam War under gun fire, trying to rescue people. But he's also human, he also speaks of his despair, he had depression in his life, he tells of moments where he did walking meditation all night out of despair and in order to not lose his mind in difficult situations. It was not all rosy for him. I think he speaks from true experience. You can read about his life and his diary. Also, I don't think his tipps here are all that can be done. Working on nervous system of the body (e.g. Irene Lyon etc) is also very important. But Thich Nhat Hanh is a very honest spiritual person. And that is special. In my darkest moments for example walking meditation has also helped me and my family members.

What you have written here is about his private life in the temporal world, but he was not the only person in human history who has gone through similar experiences, and there have been certainly many people who have experienced more tragic experiences than this monk had experienced. but what does what happened to his life and all his teachings have anything to do with the ultimate goal of Buddhism? What was the end product of his practice? Was he a Buddhist monk, what was the purpose of his practice? For just to be called a holy monk or a thinker? Please forgive me of being honest to say that your explanations prove nothing about his spiritual achievements, but just to glorify him and, you were not he. Thanks for your response, anyway.
