      Who knows? Maybe Russell would have been able to win the race, had it been started if just a little less rain and more visibility was there.
      That would have been an enormous challenge against Verstappen and Hamilton, who are not ony the 2 drivers fighting for the title, but also probably the 2 best drivers in the rain. Just imagine the madness of a win like this ! Can only imagine sadly, we'll never know if he would have finished somewhere in the points but far from victory or if he would have been able to do a series of such phenomenal laps and win the thing.
      Because sadly I think his podium is worth nothing. There was no race, it's just a quali turned into the whole thing. A 1 lap contest as a GP. Even Tiago Monteiro's Indianapolis 2005 podium has more value... :/

    The difference in speeds on the straights lets us all know the Williams had more downforce and focused solely on qualifying and would struggle if ever the track dried up.... • @raremediumdonewell
    @raremediumdonewell 3 ปีที่แล้ว +30

    What caught my eye, is the difference in handling the corners. Hamilton is, as you'd expect, much calmer in steering movements, taking no huge risks. Russell, on the other hand, is much more 'fighting' the car in every corner, taking the more aggressive approach. It's the same with every Hamilton/Verstappen comparison we see regularly.
    That's where you see the difference in experience between the two (three) drivers. The youngsters are attacking every corner, taking a lot of risk, but also gaining lots of time if it works out. Meanwhile, the experienced drivers take a more sensible approach, and rely on their car and their setup.
    It's very interesting to see.

    • @Pedrito610
      @Pedrito610 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Also has a lot to do with stability… whenever the car is on rails, both will drive clean, but since the merc has been on rails for years, there was less need for attacking a corner, cause the best line is always an option to be taken cleanly, bc of the car’s stability

    • @nikolaybonapartov7379

    Probably the most impressive part is how Russell uses throttle to control the rear of the car and oversteer. That kind of rear control by throttle is something you would see from Schumacher and Senna. Not many can do it with such accuracy. You could really see him not reacting to the oversteer, but actively anticipating it with his throttle control.

    Let’s not pretend the merc is faster in a straight JUST because it was carrying less downforce.
    Anyone in the know will tell you the merc is not only far more aerodynamically efficient and less draggy for any given level of downforce relative to a Williams, but also the Merc factory PU uses the Petronas fuels and lubricants it was designed with, and everyone knows it therefore develops marginally more power than its customer teams.

    This analysis also needs to account for the fact that Russel has nothing to lose and can afford to be more aggressive, for him being 10th in the Williams is already a win. Lewis on the other hand has a lot to lose and being 10th is a big loss when compared to taking less risks and being 2nd or 3rd. Mercedes gamble with a low down force in what was Sunday wet conditions didn't pay off with a more dry set up. • @hiran4935

      Why would Merc opt for a low downforce setup when rain was like predicted for whole 3 days. I think it was just that Williams ran an ultra high downforce setup. Besides George was purple in sector 1 where the Merc with a low downforce should dominate. That shows that it was drivers skill mostly.

    • @Stormie4cefed
      @Stormie4cefed 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@hiran4935 They Gambled in the wrong direction based on the philosophy I believe that you cant do the same equally and expect to beat your opponent. Mercedes were banking on the afternoon to be mostly dry based on whatever they saw as precipitation %. They are the only ones that really know why.. But based on what has happened, I am willing to wager that RB's overall pace in the dry is not a quick as the Mercs as they have more aero grip but are down on straight line pace. Lewis set up his car to take advantage of that which is to pass anyone in front of him which Spa present many opportunities. The Merc there for was set up for dry/mixed conditions rather than a monsoon.

    Michael was still in his prime, but was nearer the end of his career, like hamilton.
    Ferrari needed a young fast guy to take over when michael left, the same as mercedes need a young guy to take over from lewis, when he leaves.
    I would imagine both michael and lewis didn’t want these hotshots coming into “their” team, but michael left and we never got to see how he would have got on racing against kimi, but the beauty of lewis staying and george joining ( if he does!) is we will get to see how well they go against each other.

    So does this gap come from car performance or driver skill? If the answer is car performance, I understand why we're all, including me, so hyped about George's lap. If not, why not review Max' lap, because it's quicker? 🤔
