    Well , people might argue with Kubica's accusations but it was George who said that Robert was always right in terms of setup adjustment and general problems with car. In the other hand, Robert never blamed George for difficulties he had in the team. They were good teammates with respect for each other despite the fact Robert wasn't actually happy with teams policy which as you mention he might be right about.
    Sad part about this story is the fact that all three sides of the story - George , Robert and Williams itself , deserved for much much better back then.

    The opening bit about how little is written about his rookie year reminds me of an interview he did about virtual gp, basically saying him winning virtual gp got him more press than his entire year as a rookie a year before. It's amazing not only how he persevered mentally, but was able to joke and banter about always starting from the back and not scoring any points. All in all, looking forward to the day he wins WDC.

    What gets continuously ignored is that George's domination over Robert is also hardly reflective of their relative skills. Their cars _were_ most definitely different, which shouldn't be surprising considering the team wasn't able to deliver a car for the first two days of testing, and later on retired Kubica's perfectly working car to save parts (which they surprisingly admitted themselves). The team had severe problems with parts reliability and manufacturing process. They supposedly used chassis from pre-season testing for around half of the season, while most teams phase out pre-season tests chassis either before the first race or shortly after.
    A top team produces two high quality parts that are nearly identical (there are no two identical parts), and they produce them quickly, providing them for both drivers. 2019 Williams produced one part that was bad, then some time later the other part that was either much better or much worse (but still bad). In order to maximize their chance for points, they understandably put all the better parts in one car. Guess which car it was? Let me give you a hint: during that season, 1 mirror fell off from car #63, 9 mirrors fell of from car #88.
    It was clear during the 2019 season that George Russell was the priority driver and had the less terrible of two terrible Williams cars. There are several pieces of data to support that, if you're willing to look. For example, during the Pirelli tyre tests in Bahrain, on day 1 both Russell and Kubica drove car #88, with Robert coming out on top by 0,4s.
    You can also take a look on Russell' and Kubica's telemetry from Monaco quali, the most driver-dependant track in the calendar: imgur(dot)com/a/yMDTvnd
    You can see that Robert takes several corners better than George, but loses a lot on two straights, especially the uphill straight after turn 1, where he suffers from some weird acceleration issues. Then he lifts significantly on the first Piscine chicane that can be taken flat-out or almost flat-out, something a driver who went through an entire lap basically flawlessly, and used to be on podium in Monaco twice, won't do, unless he knows the car won't give there.
    And even if it was an honest mistake, Robert was better for the best part of the hardest lap on the calendar, so I doubt his skill was behind George as much as the results indicate (if at all), given all the circumstances. I think because of Williams' internal problems, F1 lost a brilliant driver with an inspiring story behind him. It's a small consolation that at least one of those two great drivers left the whole mess unscathed, and had a chance to prove his admittable worth in future seasons.

    I hope the 3 years in the Williams car hasn’t affected Russell too much. He lost out on gaining experience in 1v1 racing and that’s shown at points this season. I genuinely believe Russell will be the 2nd best driver on the grid after Max when Hamilton retires because of his talent and his mentality. If Mercedes had George in 2021 Hamilton would’ve won the WDC imo, people don’t put enough respect on his F2 season.

    I think it's very much accepted that 3 years at Williams were too much for him, even Toto is aknowledging this right now. And it seems to be an open secret almost that he would've liked Russell in their car for 2021... I think what we saw from George this year was fascinating, because at times he was driving like a seasoned veteran, and other times you could feel the frustration the Williams years have left in his driving.
    If anything, I think the tough years with that team will help him tremendously in the future mentally, and I think it already helped him this year too. Just as a 21 year old he was expected to be a team leader at a struggling team that was at its lowest. I'm sure this he's learned lessons there that his young competitors have never had to face.

    Tbh George beating Kubica isn’t remotely credible imo. For anyone that has been part of F1 for a few decades will remember how Kubica schooled Lewis and co in the junior ranks but was unlucky in the car he landed into in F1. He drove the wheels off of it and worked incredibly hard dragging a team up with him. He was a future champion and on the verge of signing with Ferrari. However before preseason was hurt badly in an accident. I think it may have been rallying, and he was cut down in his prime. He lost his clearance to drive in F1 and lost his ride. His comeback now with Williams is sadly an imitation of the greatness of this man. Kubica, F1 and the fans were robbed of a legendary competitor who could easily have won multiple titles.

    • @TheFatSandwhich
      @TheFatSandwhich ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @mikez2779 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@TheFatSandwhich well, the point is the current rhetoric is that Kub has lost it after that accident
      no he didnt
      what they dont mention is that if Russel car was a shitbox
      Kubicas car was just so much even worse
      Because Russel was a young upcomming british talent in a british team, a team that the only good thing they were able to say to the british F1 reporters was "at least we allow this young british rookie to shine"
      Kubicas car wasn't even going straight under braking - thats exactly why he crashed in Baku.
      The car was literally falling apart on the kerbs - as Russel himself recently admitted - as it was build out of a significant number of "recycled" parts.
      The reason why Kubica was usually faster at the race start, and then losing his position several laps later was his car was killing the tyres in these several laps. Which the brits have explained with "maybe he didn't understand the tyres" - yeah, i call it complete BS. To this day, Pirelli specifically requests Kubica to drive in tyre tests - as he did just a few months ago. His car aerodynamic balance was a joke, that's the truth.
      Also begs a question why exactly Russel was faster on the straight line, even if Kubica was faster going out of the corner? Telemetry has shown this multiple times. Because he was a Mercededs driver in a car with mercedes engine, that's why.

    If you think back to these days, it goes to show the new regulations at least somehow worked.
    Reflecting how much had to go their way for Williams to even think about a single point back then is crazy. In contrast, although the Alphatauri is the worst car on the grid rn, it is still capable of making it to the points pretty much on merit on a good weekend. As goes for the rest of the backmarkers in Williams, Haas and Alfa.

    I like comparison with Fernando. George was was the only driver who had make a presentation to Williams as to why he was the correct driver for them for their 2019 driver line up. Alex kind of lucked himself into F1 as was going to drive for Nissan in Formula E before beling released to drive for Toro Rosso in 2019. I think it good low profile team to start his f1 carreer with and helped his development. Robert came in an interview as disspointed with Williams but the made point podcast about Williams being back markers and being compared to Tyrell by journalists at Autosport is they are too indendpendnat and made eveything in house at time when for example Renault had a pedal supplier . Having seen your video I can see why feels the way he does about his season at Williams. It's fair to say 2019 wasn't good a year for Williams or Robert but a good education for George.

    That comparison with 21' Haas totally makes no ever slightest of sense to me. Nikita was hopelessly mediocre on F1 level, Mick - very late bloomer, both were pretty hotheaded and team management hasn't got a clue about ways of resolving that situation. Compared to Kubica's experience and George methodical determination (which cracked only on 21 season) - their situation has nothing in common. Almost only current direct analogy that I can think of is Bottas-Zhou pairing this year, but it lacks good team principal in equation. But it is still sad that we don't see Claire in some role in current paddock - she gives an impression of pretty mediocre team principal (or, more likely, hasn't got enough time to grow to that role), but pretty good on managing support side of the things.

    GR was a no points loser at Williams when it was even faster than the Haas and if you look at the 2016 Manor Racing car of Wehrlein or the even worse 2017 Sauber he scored points paying positions

    Polish people are losing their minds when you mention to them how Russell was better than Kubica but they always defend him because of that insanely lucky 1 point that doesnt show the whole picture

    • @steelin666
      @steelin666 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Saying people don't see "the whole picture" while seeing nothing wrong with claim that Russell was straight up better despite very muddy circumstances in which they competed is pretty hypocritical.

    • @garbage2882
      @garbage2882 ปีที่แล้ว

      Generalizing that all Polish people do that is wrong. Russel was better, but considering one driver had a car and other still a gokart, I'm pretty sure the gap between them would've been smaller if they were driving for Alfa Romeo for example.

    Russell's gap to Kubica isn't impressive when your consider Giovinazzi was over a second quicker than Kubica in 2021. But let's ignore that part because it doesn't fit the narrative.

      @@chamindujanith6337 you did not just compare a 27 year old third year driver beating a reserve driver to a 21 year old rookie beating a full time driver 💀
      Two race weekends, enough for a 36 year old with one half of an arm to instantly get up to pace with full time drivers after being given a short notice and hadn't driven a F1 car in 1.5 years. Context is clearly not your strong suit and it shows.

    F1 is the worse Motorsport out of them all. Money is how you win championships. There should be a smaller amount of money allowed to spend. The cap now only affects about half of the field. Then when Red Bull went over budget and won a championship isn’t fair. They fined them and let them continue as a true champ instead of a cheater. And that’s cheating. The other thing is they need to set guidelines. Mercedes had the moving steering wheel that they allowed until the end of the season. The FIA makes decisions hours after the race and it changes who won. F1 could be a great sport. But because of all the nonsense it’s not a sport that focuses on driver talent. Instead it’s how much money you have. When is the last time you seen a back field team climb to the top?
