  • On those busy days when I don’t have much time to paint, I delve into a speedy abstract painting session, and in this video, I'm focusing on the exploration of organic shapes as a warm-up exercise. This is a good example of how time constraints can become an opportunity for spontaneous creativity.

    Nestled within the pages of my sketchbook, I began this session by embracing the unpredictability of creation, allowing my charcoal to move across the surface, forming random yet purposeful shapes. Accompanied by a graphite stick and a cobalt blue water-soluble wax pastel, I sketched marks that intermingled and converged, lending an unexpected character to the abstract painting.
    Inspired by the fundamental elements of art, I chose to spotlight "shape" as my starting point, leveraging its inherent versatility and fluidity. While introducing the concept of the 7 elements of art - Shape, Line, Form, Color, Texture, Space, and Value - I initiated this painting with a focus on shape. I often use these elements as prompts to spark my artistic journey, leveraging their unique attributes to guide my expressions.
    Although I began with shape as my prompt, the intuitive nature of this creative process led me to organically incorporate various elements along the way. As the painting unfolds, you'll see me integrate color, value, lines, and the interplay of form and space, all converging to create harmonious artistic expression.
    While I don't have a dedicated video on the 7 elements of art, I encourage exploration and understanding of these foundational principles. For a comprehensive insight into these elements, here is a link to an engaging and informative video by @jesciahopper ( • Understanding the Elem... , offering a deeper dive into their nuances and significance in artistic creation.
    Join me in this journey of spontaneous creativity, where organic shapes serve as the catalyst for a whirlwind of artistic exploration and expression. Discover the magic of a speedy abstract painting session, where limitations fade, and artistic freedom reigns supreme.
    Keep on painting!

    This is a great idea! Setting a time of 10 - 15 minutes would help me not think so much about what i am doing and just play. I noticed you had some media picked out to prior to starting. Thank you for this video I will give this a try. What kind of paper is this sketch book?

      Thanks, Shirley! I did grab a little bin of charcoal and graphite as well as a few tubes of paint. The sketchbook paper I'm using is fluid mixed media paper that is 250 gsm - amzn.to/3EN3jod. I picked up a couple of these sketchbooks to give them a try and so far really like the paper.

    Great motivational video, Chris, thank you, and it totally speaks to me. Even though there are some days when I am just too shattered to pick up any paint materials. Not posted a whole lot lately as November is a tough month. 😊

    Loved this...wonderful construct to shake off all of the usual "terrors of the blank page". :) Exaggerating a bit there, but as a beginner, not too much! What are the paints that you use? New subscriber, look forward to catching up with your content. Thanks so much.

      Thanks, Jordan! Haha, we all experience the "terrors" of the blank page now and then no matter our skill level. In this painting I used some Liquitex light olive green and some Winsor Newton alizarin crimson, cad. yellow medium and titanium white. I will pretty much play with any brand in my sketchbooks.🎨

    Thanks Chris. Wondering, what would you suggest using instead of charcoal? I have trouble with the black being so dominant. Sometimes it serves the intent, not often. Very impressed that you "put things away".

    • @chrisloudart
      @chrisloudart  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey Ann! Haha, I use the phrase "put things away" loosely. I often use Caran d'Ache water-soluble wax pastels (amzn.to/3QRNMe4) on pieces like this instead of charcoal. They don't smudge quite as well as charcoal, but you can get a similar result. Obviously adding water allows you to play with the marks more. Hope that helps. 😊

      Thank you, Chris - seems like a no-brainer, but I really appreciate you responding. I'll be trying out other options too. @@chrisloudart
