Just came back to D2 after more than a decade. Currently playing on HC SP with plugy mode. Only after watching this video did I realise you could reassign attributes using alt haha.

Dear @MrLlamaSC, could you please make a 2021 updated version of your 2017 mf blizz sorc guide? This way, we could benefit from the wisdom you gained in the last 4 years and be ready to aim for the most efficient blizz sorc in D2R! I am currently making my character designs ahead of the D2R release.

the vast majority of info is really the same, as it has been for the past 15 odd years. Llama's blizz sorc these days does include a 20 point investment into the fire tree (10 fbolt, 10fball), that build could do with an item guide

I use to play all the time on Bnet, but the same strats dont necessarily apply in Single Player. Thanks mate and keep up the good work!
I always started with the necromancer but mostly because I didn't know about all the FHR and FCR breakpoints and such. Running a zookeeper was super easy for a beginner and without gear. It is very annoying in some certain areas like Maggot Lair and Arcane Sanctuary but other than that it was a breeze to run through all acts including hell.
But I agree that sorc is objectively the best starter.

Sorcs are a blast to play if you can get past the mana consumption issues early on. You'll be constantly going back to town and loading your inventory with mana pots. Because you'll be emptying your belt none stop, chugging mana pots over and over and over. This slowly gets better but it won't be until countess in nightmare that this problem really starts to go away/get better. The very first thing I do in NM is farm countess until I get all the runes for the Insight Runeword for the act 2 merc. The meditation aura/mana regen aura is so powerful and it essentially makes mana potions obsolete. Usually I'll just find a 4 socket voulge in normal cows to throw the runeword in. It doesn't take too long. You can actually luck out and find a sol rune before nightmare, usually they can drop in act 5 I think. All the other runes are common drops in normal countess. Ral-Tir-Tal. Sol being the final rune to make the rune word.
Once you get that mana regen from your merc's insight, playing a sorc becomes infinitely more enjoyable. Just keep plenty of health pots on hand because even going pure vitality, sorcs still take a lot of damage at times and you gotta stay on the move generally. And yeah, there's really no need to go any other build other than getting just enough strength to hit 156 total with end-game gear, and the rest in vitality. 156 strength is what you need for spirit runeword in a monarch shield. You probably know all this though.
As far as runewords goes, you'll want a few. Like 5 or so.
Stealth chest
Lore helm
Insight for the act 2 merc.
Spirit weapon in a crystal sword.
Rhyme in your shield.
Obviously, based on when the runes become available is when you craft those runewords. I generally have all of these before I get out of act 1 in nightmare. Stealth is the exception since it's very low level, and you'll definitely have it by act 2 normal if you farm countess at all for levels and runes. There's other runewords you'll want at VERY high level, like Infinity for the Act 2 merc or spirit shield in a monarch. Finding the runes for infinity is almost impossible in single player...but spirit shield you will get, it just won't be until later in hell when you can finally get a monarch shield to drop.
It goes without saying you'll need plugy if you want to use ladder runewords in single player.

Why don't you use infinity on the merc to break immunities and handle cold immunes with the sorc herself ?
I know technically Frozen Orb isn't as good as Blizzard...but I don't care. Frozen Orb builds are just so much more satisfying for me to play. I love that swirling ball of shreddy ice death. Or so I call it. I've messed around with pure cold builds and blizzard, I generally don't like pigeonholing myself into one element like that so 99% of the time when I play a sorc, I go orbballer. Frozen Orb primary spell, and fireball on my left click. Two elements to play with, less cases of running into a situation where I'm locked out because a boss is immune to all of my damage. Very rarely will I encounter an enemy that's immune to both fire and frost, and when I run into one, I can just static field and let the merc wack on em to finish them off. To me, this is the best build for hell especially just starting out. Work on maxing out your frozen orb and it's synergy in nightmare, and get a decent amount into cold mastery and then worry about your fireball after that. By the time you get ready for hell, your fireball spell should do enough damage to carry you if you run into a cold immune mob. It may take a little longer at first because you focused your skill points in frost first, but you should still be able to get through hell without any trouble. If you run into too many cold immune mobs, just teleport past them and keep going.
Blizzard is better than Frozen Orb because it has more synergies, orb only has one synergy I'm pretty sure. But it's so much more fun to play. In my opinion. I also can't play this game without plugy anymore. Being able to actually save items I come across for other characters I want to make? That's so crucial to getting max enjoyment out of this game all these years later. The ability to respec and move stat points around whenever I want? I don't know how I could play this game again that way. Not all this time later. I'll do it every once in a while if I want to play on a ladder reset or something but that's pretty rare. 99.9% of my D2 playing these days is single player.
Plugy is the best, hopefully someone can get it working for 1.14
Good info. Still, it's stupid to stack a bunch of resistances on the mercenary, because he reaches the 75% cap easily. It's better to go for life leech, dmg or atk speed.
i don't get how can you go through hell solo with a blizzard sorc? how do you manage all the enemies immune to cold?
I am also not sure if Blizz sorc is good as a first char, because your merc is not strong enough in the beginning to handle groups of cold imuns...

Thanks for the solid info! I don't get why you put all those points into Frozen orb though if your not using the spell. Are there situations where you use Orb instead of Blizz? Didn't hear an explanation for that.

why not use Shiver armor? Frost armor freezes when the monsters hit connects with you. Shiver armor freezes when the monsters attack animation starts. seems like a better layer of defense for 1 skill point. esp if your hardcore.

The only trouble I have with blizz is that it sits on the same mouse button as teleport. Game often ignores me striking the blizz key when teleporting, and I jump into mobs instead of killing them. For me, orb is way safer because of this.

using this build and I'm trying to farm nightmare baal for levels, but sometimes there are hell witches, which are immune to cold in nightmare. Makes clearing the throne a real chore since my merc is no where near as decked out as yours and dies often

I started placing tomes in cube, still got a nice 2x4 for a polearm or chest and more room for charms. Got my first ever SOJ today, traded it for Vex Lo, made Hoto, sold the Lo for 8 Ists, bought another SOJ for 7 Ists. Only 30 res on hoto tho but oh well, it beats spirit. Edit oh, never mind. Can't use tomes while they're in chest, that's a darn shame.
Why does Infinity only makes sense for a Fireball / Frozen Orb sorc and not for a Blizzard sorc?

@MrlLamaSC - So I noticed your build goes over the 135% cold mastery max that is recommended by others. This video I linked at the end of my comment, for example, portrays that 135% cold mastery will take monsters to -100% CR, which is supposed to be the max. Why go over the 135% if that is the case? The part about getting hit more if mobs are non-frozen was news to me. Is this due to the enemies state being updated more frequently when moving, so damage procs more frequently?
I watched this video and saw you produce that bug where clicking an item swaps with another item in the upper left corner. I haven't played in 10+ years so this was new to me. I completely forgot about this and while playing the next day I saw it myself (and couldn't reproduce it a second time, doing exactly what I had just done). I have to wonder, how common is this if I see you do it and then go do it myself the next day. Anyone else know about this bug? Do you see it often?

Biggest contradiction in gameplay - he talks about using Icy Blast to stop monsters, but then wants the others moving around in the Blizz. Agreed. Thats why the build uses Glacial Spike. Slows and damages with aoe. Icy Blast is slow cr, single target high damage, with freeze effect. Use it on superuniques, and spam GS at the mobs.
glacial spike freezes larger groups. Icy blast on freezes individual and then the monsters walk around him
in order to have extra ammo ... I went with range sorceres . with Crossbow/Bow or trowing knive ,
fire potion sucks , it isas good as positioned grenade , poison gass is better as frag grenade .
and also , IT MUST BE KEPT ONE SCROLL OF TOWN PORTAL AS IMPERATIVE . I forgot this , finding this friken marker for portal was so damn friken hard ! And I forgot

I’ve just rejoined D2 after a long time. Patch 1.14 character flagged as ladder even though ladder system appears to be off. Can I still craft ladder only Runewords? Such as fortitude and spirit
What are all the small charms?
So if you start fresh and can‘t equip your merc well a Blizz sorc isn‘t recommendet because you can‘t really handle cold imuns?
I have a better question. Do you have a guide to a 1.07 sorceress build. How can u have so much into cold when you come across an enemy IMMUNE TO COLD IMMUNE TO LIGHTNING???
isn't cold mastery for melee sorcs ? because it says "cold attacks" not spells.

Full tal, magefist 2nagel and spirit is overall best mf gear, can be even cheaper or much more expensiv, but can do things nice with great attributes like res fcr..
im starting to build a frozen orb sorc, im wondering what you do if you encounter a coldimmune monster?
teleport past it, have merc kill it, or use fire if I'm dual spec

Still trying to find a video that goes over when to respec into cold as in practice I've done it a few times now from various lightning openers and it feels... bad. Really bad. Blizz isn't even unlocked until level 28, so sometime very late in Normal mode. Any time I've respec'd before then the abilities just feel horrible. I guess I'll play Nova.
How are you getting enough strength by the time you get to level 54 to wear that spirit shield?

why is crown of thieves so underrated for merc ? it has +12%ll
Magefist also gives regenerate mana 25% so not only you get more warmth but also more regen. I like to wear Magefist and Soj so you don't need to have mana charms at all. More 7% mf with def and 20 life 5 all res small charms.
i finally found a pair of war travs last night. they rolled 31% mf :D

I usually found (almost) perfect ones, with defense % as well, of course, while I was sleeping. :-) Otherwise, the game had no meaning without those runz.
How do u deal with immune to cold?
Is it possible to farm runes/gears in nightmare before entering hell?
1. Merc
2. Fire/lightning attacks if I dual spec
3. Avoid them if 1 or 2 don't exist!
and yes you can farm stuff from nightmare mephy/chaos/baal
Just farm pindle or ancient tunnels to get any item in the game

I got Skulders but it has half of defense as this one it has 600 def.
I'm assuming you didn't upgrade yours yet, if you throw it in the cube with a Lem, Ko and a perfect diamond you can upgrade it to a Balrog skin, which would double it's defense

which level should be static fied to have range of Frost ring in strong enemy is good on weak like fallen than other attacks are better . If Iknow how to broaden the range of Static field than I would improve it .

Hei buddy , just make obedience in ă tresher and drop a ias jewel in to kiras then youll hit 6 fps . Not much different then 5.5 that you hit with you actual setup of merc

For a first character to play SP and have good MF, would you do a blizz sorc, a light sorc or an hammerdin ? I feel that the sorc learning curve for new players (haven't played in 15+ years) is way higher.
I think hammerdin or blizz sorc. Sorc is definitely more fragile but you can just farm mephisto (across the river) to get good gear first
Anyone have any advice concerning the rune word insight? The warmth aura on it is OP when given to merc...problem is it's only for ladder, any ideas on something else for helping with mana regen

Another question for you. I have full inventory of charms and it ruins the game for me. Should I sell all my charms since none are amazing? Do dex or ToHit charms help a LF zon? Thanks for your responces.
I'd get rid of most of those. You want either +skillers or +life charms mostly. Some Dex or mana could be okay depending how your char is doing.
