Hopefully we'll get Sign O the Times on 4k one day.
That would be amazing, but I wouldn’t hold my breath on that one. It’s a ownership/licensing issue. Which is why they Didn’t include a Blu-ray of it, in the “SOTT Super Deluxe” boxed set (cd or lp version). They instead gave us an alternate, less production, concert. Which is actually an amazing performance, of course. But a good 4k of any of his other movies or concerts, would be a MASSIVE wish come true!! 🙏🏽
@@MarkChocolate I'm glad they put the NYE Paisley Park show on the SOTT SDE. Any real Prince fan already has the SOTT Live movie on bluray anyway.
, Apalonia jumping in that cold water worth the price of admission alone 😂😂 real trooper
@@corysmith4293 You ain’t lying. 😂
I cannot WAIT to sit down and watch one of the most iconic movies of my childhood in 4K!!!! HELL YEAH LETS GOOOOOOO💪🏻💪🏻🔥🔥🔥🔥
Les geauxxx
I actually saw this at ten years old during a double feature that had both it and Gremlins. Not really a pairing that makes much sense, but those were both were playing, and I saw both that day for the first time. Went out and purchased the Purple Rain cassette after.
@@Neonmirrorblack Haha that’s a hell of a combo for sure😂😂 But how iconic? I was 10 too man! ‘84 was a helluva year for movies!🤙🏻
*I watched this in a cinema theater back in the 80's.* I still have my VHS version. I was to every Prince concerts in my region from 1986 to the early 90's. Some concert tours I even went to multiple locations in my region to visit. I still have *the black and white Paisley patterned tambourine* I caught, which he threw out to the audience on the Parade Tour. He threw out 3, I was happy enough to catch the third. Then I think it was Wendy, maybe Lisa, who threw out 3 more on that concert. It's still in perfect condition. The black and white ribbons are still there and no rust. I kept it in my home, not in some storage or garage. I still have all my Prince vinyl records from that time, my Sign Of The Times VHS. Also on my wall to this day is the Movie poster for Sign Of The Times, as well as a peach background poster with the whole Sign Of The Times lyrics on it. The last concert I visited was in early 90's when he used his sign, since he was in that dispute with WB to get free from his contract. Prince was the Mozart of our time. I've been to two concert afterparties where he did appear in person (not to perform, but just to hang out and party). Oh, I also watched Under The Cherry Moon in a movie theater back in the 80's. Also Sign Of The Times Concert Movie, plus I went to the real concert as well of course. I was so sad when I got to to know he passed away in April 2016. It really hit me. Indeed *"Sometimes It Snows In April".*
I was watching an interview with Wendy and she said that Prince, Lisa and her wrote Sometimes It Snows In April on April 21st in a previous year .
@@stevevlahos5469 That makes it even more sad and also chilling in a way. Thank you for that information. Btw, was that an old interview or after he passed away? I would like to try and find it. It's not one that I have watched yet. I like to watch as much as possible surrounding Prince.
Some guy said the movie is in it's aspect ratio for the first time ever on home video. I had the 20th anniversary 2 disc special edition d.v.d that came out years ago and the movie IS in it's original ratio ''1.85.1''. Those 3 additional missing special features are on that release.
Hey Ken. Just to let you know, the UK release has the blu ray included, with all the special features.
Good to know, thanks for the info!
Can you verify if the blu ray (special features) disc is region free, so it'd play on a US PS5 ? Thanks!
@@brianc6196 Not sure. Haven't got my copy yet. Can anybody else weigh in with an answer?
Finally! Why wasn’t this masterpiece given the 4k Ultra HD conversation sooner??? Great Movie!
At least we got it when they were ready 😮
Purple Rain is really not a great movie. But get this: I’ve bought it on VHS, old snapcase DVD, 20th Anniversary 2-disc Collector’s Edition DVD, and I just bought it on blu-ray last November. I don’t even have a 4K player yet, but I absolutely plan on getting Purple Rain on 4K!
Just watched this last night and it looks amazing. I’m guessing this “big” problem is the lack of special features for the 40th anniversary.
Since this has always looked bad on physical I’m happy to have the upgrade on 4K. The special features on this movie are on my old Blu-ray. Exciting review!
It's the second movie to be scanned at 8K, the first is 'The Fugitive' and the upgrade audio is also a nice addition. Cool for the fans!
Just seen it on iTunes - my old HD got the 4K Dolby Vision upgrade. On my LG C2 OLED with Apple TV 4K the picture of this film looks outstanding and the sound is incredibly punchy and powerful. They've done a great job of this remaster!!!
One of the best soundtracks/albums of all time and the movie is great as well! Definitely picking this up.
Agree with you Ken, really want the studios to include all the extras so that each 4K I buy is the definitive collection for the movies I love.
The definitive version until the studio "discovers" something "thought lost" or "all new" and releases the next definitive version.
@@eteocles4452 Tell me about it, I'm the victim of countless triple, quadruple dips... What's after that, quintuple dips?
For me, when I buy a 4k, I'm not buying it for special features. And if there _are_ any, barring a commentary, I would want them on a second disc, so that every possible ounce of bit rate on the disc is going to the movie. So if the release is 4K only, I'm 100% okay with as few extras as possible. For me, in this case, there being only a few features isn't a huge problem, it's a bonus.
That's just me.
I was really hoping the Prince Estate and WB would do something extra special with the movie.
Maybe some really cool packaging, poster, replica tickets, deleted scenes (if any are salvageable), the 1983 concert at First Ave etc etc.
I think there was a great opportunity to do some cool stuff with the 40 anniversary, but it’s too late now.
I have had it pre-ordered since you announced it!
80% of my 4K purchases are based on bonus features content. It's nuts that companies continue to do this stuff.
Thanks for sharing. I remembering seeing it on film in high school at my hometown movie theater (or most it -- "Darling Nikki" got cut because of a play rehearsal, and maybe "Computer Blue," too). Would love to see the restored version. Shawn R., Mo-Mutt Music/Sacred & Secular
WB giving detail on the scan like that is a great thing going forward if - IF they make it policy.
I normally get rid of my standard blu release when I get a 4k, but I'm holding onto it anyways because I have the "Prince Movie Collection" set that came out right after his death as I doubt we're going to get 4k releases of Under The Cherry Moon or Graffiti Bridge anyways, so I'm keeping the blu anyways to keep the other two movies.
As you're a Prince fan from Louisville, did you ever get a chance to see him live? I saw him twice (once in 2007 in his hometown as I was dating someone who lived in Minneapolis at the time, and the second at the Louisville Palace roughly a year before his death) and he was truly a once in a lifetime performer, wish I'd see him more
I saw Prince at Louisville Gardens in 1997! Sadly, I didn’t get to see any of the Palace Theater dates, but I had one friend who got to go to two of those shows.
He played “The Kid”. They never said the name Prince in the movie.
I own the LG C3 65inch OLED tv and its by far THE BEST tv ive ever owned and because of the amazing picture quality...4k discs and even regular blu rays look gorgeous...if i look back when i owned just a regular samsung 4k tv 5-6 years ago, 4k discs looked overly dark and thats why i didnt buy i invested in a premium tv. So my advice to 4k non-believers is put some money aside and purchase a high end tv and you will see what the big deal about 4k is.
Yeah. The OLED experience changed my entire perspective on 4K.
It is perfect for what it is. It’s a one of a kind experience
Great review, Ken! Looking forward to getting this classic on 4K. Takes me back to my childhood. Prince was one of the all time greats!
Purple Rain came today Monday in the mail so I'm watching it right now 🎸🎸🎸🎶🎶🎶
When I can, I usually just make my own combo packs with a 2-disc case. Pair the old BD with the new UHD, and keep the old BD case as a spare for the future. I usually put the old artwork behind the new artwork.
The UK version contain the Blu-Ray also.
9:17”filmed in the 40s” so Warner sat on this for ages
😂
To each his own, I guess. I have never watched the special features of a movie. I don't want the curtain pulled back. I don't want to see how the sausage is made. It would make suspending disbelief more difficult when I see the movie again. I just want to enjoy eating the highest quality sausage possible and move on.
you have a point but some of the special features were quite cool on the blu, the music videos that were all over MTV in 84-85 but the real gem is the MTV premiere party of the show from summer 1984 that is a time capsule, interviews with people like Eddie Murphy and Weird Al going to the premiere of the film, etc..... it's definitely fun nostalgia and is a nice extra
I used to be just like that until I started the channel and felt it necessary to dive into them for reviews. Now it’s an important part of my viewing experience
I have the movie on DVD. And sound track
Watching it now! Movies from 1984 have an interesting feel for me this year with it being my birth year. I'm turning 40 with all of these movies. 😭Love it and the soundtrack.😭The slip is pretty nice as well. I was trying to not get my finger prints all over it 😂😂
Glad I pre-ordered the limited edition steelbook, it comes with the Blu-ray and special features. Correction so does the standard slip version 4K 😅. WB must not like giving the US Blu-rays. Maybe it's because they get digital codes instead. I’ll be adding my old standard Blu-ray to the sell pile. Same with Enter the Dragon, I got the normal slip version, which included a Blu-ray and special features. Although not with Vacation, I had to buy the limited edition. So it's hit-and-miss.
honestly the blu is worth keeping if you own the Prince Movie Collection set, I really doubt Cherry Moon or Graffiti Bridge will ever see the light of day on 4k, it's almost a miracle they even got blu-ray considering some of the titles that never went past DVD, but as long as that set exists, I'm not selling the blu even though I'm getting PR in 4k
@nah....6151 @nah....6151 I’ve got the standard Blu-ray of Purple Rain, not a collection. It’ll be the same disc that’s in the limited steelbook. I don’t have have Cherry Moon or Graffiti Bridge.
Steelbook in uk is completely purple we have the bluray with the extras...my issue is no atmos..that's a missed opportunity especially as the audio is coming out in atmos later this year!
I have preordered the steelbook version from Amazon UK. I could care less about the extra features. I’m glad to hear they restored it to the best it can be.
Got this ASAP and loved every second of it- made me feel like a kid again! Would have enjoyed those extras though... gotta go scour TH-cam now.
No shade to Appolonia there is a part of me that wishes Vanity had been his co -star .
Dude!!! I believe you should sing every video!!!
Your awesome video and *AloneinTheDark68's* comment (further down) made me search a bit and I found the steelbox version on both A-m-a/z-o-n UK, which has a different domain name at the end (after the dot) and the German, again a different domain name at the end (after the dot), to be released late July/early August. It says it's region free, so should work for you in US too. I simply had to get it from UK. It looks like they send globally. At least it said they send to my country which is not in UK, but mainland Europe. It's not due to being in EU, since UK is no longer part of EU, still they send it to my country (which is in eu). The steelbox does indeed seem to include both the 4K UHD plus the blu-ray with all the extra materials (according to the details). 😎
Mine already arrived on Friday. Gonna this weekend. BTW, Prince made four films.
I too and a special feature lover. They really add value to the release, especially for those that love the film.
Thank you.Really.Thank you.
One of my favorite films right here. I was hoping for the deleted scenes but still happy for this release.
Been waiting for this and the details. Regarding the special features, the US version is lacking, some releases have all the special features on the digital copy, but not this one. ONLY way to get alll the special features is to get a UK import that has the 4K and Blu-Ray disc. I purchased standard slipcover version from Zavvi US, ships to America for $5.99. Cost me about $33 total.
Normally special features might not be worth it, but all you need to know is that there is an album release party. Little Richard shows up to and claims he invented everything, and he has a Bible that he's tried to convert people after recently announcing he was not gay anymore. Watching that '80s celebrity weirdness at the party is worth it. Shocking there wasn't a Charlie Murphy true Hollywood stories about Little Richard showing up trying to convert people at Prince's party.
thank you ken… for not singing… and the great review of course…
Awesome pick
There are actually 2 different 4k steelbooks, 1 is an HMV exclusive, I ordered both 😅
I am awaiting my steelbook and can’t wait to get it - Shame through hearing about them dropping all those special features.
You’d think they could’ve used a 100GB 4k disc and just kept then all. Poor choice on their behalf.
Can’t wait to pick up this classic musical film 😊❤
i still have the hd-dvd… guess it‘s time to upgrade…
Damnit Ken. I just spent more money and preordered it. 💸💸💸
Talk about a classic that takes us back to an ERA and best one ever, when movies music tv and fashion were 💯❤️🎥🎬🎶📺👏🏻
They should've waited a month. Then it would've been a true 40th anniversary of the movie. July 27th, 2024
FYI: the Blu-ray you're holding is the 2007 one, which is based on an older HD scan that was first used for the movie's 20th anniversary DVD.
The 2016 Blu-ray release was based on a 2K scan of the interpositive. There is also a 2018 Blu-ray in the USA, which AFAIK is just the 2016 one but in a regular Blu-ray case (the 2016 one is housed in a purple case).
AWEsome.. Still wish Atmos was included or DTS:X. But a totally re-make of the sound is good enough. I think the way Warner brought this out this way cause there might be a Big Boxset coming with All 3 movies in 4k and all the Bells & Whistles.. We can only hope. But not having a restored Blu kinda suck.. But Oh, well....
And I'm happy with the 2.0 track.
How many people remember back in the day when this movie was still in the theaters, they also released it on VHS for home rental? You could go see it in the theater or rent it at the video store.
yep, they also did this with Flashdance as well which came out on video while the movie was still in the theater, VHS was still somewhat niche at the time so it didn't really hurt the box office
@@nah....6151 Interesting. I don't remember that with Flashdance...
I remember Auntie had the VHS, in the early 80s she played to death
I saw it in a theater and also still have my VHS version of it. I also still have my Sign Of The Times VHS. Unfortunetly it seems like my Under The Cherry Moon on VHS has been lost over time.
FYI! There is NO Dolby Vision on this disk. Nor Dolby Atmos. Picture quality is still great and HDR 10 works well!
Full of lies here, it DOES have Dolby Vision!
@@blackphilipalvarez1305doesn’t show on the back cover for Amazon preorder.
God
@@blackphilipalvarez1305 No Dolby Vision on my disk. Why are you calling me a lier??
@@blackphilipalvarez1305 There is NO Dolby Vision on the disc. Just HDR 10. No need to call me a lier. Just see the official disc details. And when I played the disc no Dolby Vision was on it. Just HDR 10.
Like the movie and will likely pick up the 4K eventually. Looks like I’m keeping the blu ray as well.
Have to wait a month for mine pre-order to ship as I wanted the steelbook which is only available in the UK release and not shipping till end of July. But looking forward to it for sure. Strangely it looks as if the UK release has the BD with it didn't worry me cos I have BD with all the special features already but yes your right it is nice to have it all in one set.
The sorta sequel Graffiti Bridge is such a letdown but Morris Day and the Time steal that one too.
I'm ok with them ditching the bluray disc, but I don't wanna lose legacy special features. I guess this is what it sounds like, when doves cry. 😢
I saw this film for the first time during the pandemic. It's pretty silly to be honest. I'm glad I saw it, but not something I'll ever want to own. I'd rather listen to Prince than watch him.
Was there really a pandemic??!
@@micheldutch3393 I have two friends dead from covid who would say yes.
I got to see this again in theater after he passed. I own the 2 disc dvd which i am happy with and i will not be upgrading, the soundtrack is amazing. The film, well its ridiculous and silly and stereotypical. It was a marketing vehicle for Prince at the time. And of all his other films, under the cherry moon and the god awful Graffiti Bridge which he directed, purple rain is the best of those three, now his concert film Sign of the times THATS HIS BEST FILM.
Ken! Steve. I'm your biggest fan. 😂
Great, now I got to keep the Blu ray 🤦🏾♂️ Cheap Bastards.
Got it from Gruv a week ago!
So only 4K no regular blu ray release ?
they probably cut them because they don't want to pay for licensing and its WB y'know there will be 3 more releases of this.
Wear your Prince Batman Soundtrack proudly purple friends!
The heck with xtrSs
Ik vond the fred durst scène echt, leuk in purple Rain... Lol
Di you know there is an updated Blu-ray of Purple Rain in a 3 movie collection? It contains all 3 of Princes movies. They redid the movie for this release. Why would I want a Blu-ran. Only with a 4K copy. I never watch the blu-ray copy of any 4K release. It is just a vast of material. Can’t wait to want this again for the 100th time.
I doubt we'll ever receive Under The Cherry Moon or Graffiti Bridge in 4k so I'd hold onto the blu set if you want those other two movies
You have a Halloween 6 poster on your wall? That movie is awful!
A gift from my friends on my 30th birthday. Not my favorite of the franchise, but I love the poster.
The film upsets me. Stopped having anything to with Prince; his death saddens me.
Hey Ken, do you think Argylle will get a physical media release, or we should abandon all hope because it was a big flop. ? Let's remember Prince won an Oscar for Purple Rain, unfortunately, I haven't seen that film yet. Thank you for the review Ken !!
I hope it does... I actually found a bootleg blu-ray at a flea market awhile back to hold me over (just like I did with Barbarian), I will upgrade both of those if an official release comes out, but they're not giving us an option
@@nah....6151 Thank you Ken, you are a 100 per cent right !
Warner!!!! ADD THE BLURAY!!!
Or just keep the old one also smh

Does this have Dolby Vision or no??
It does not. I misspoke
@@midlevelmedia yes it does I watched it last night.
In the UK this film was released last week. The price point was £ 19.00, so a bit less than US version. Not the best film ever but it is Prince in HD and enhanced sound.❤❤
Maybe they couldn't get permission to use those other special features again? Did you ever think about that?

Purple rain is not biographical in any way Prince’s father was not abusive at all.
The big con is that Prince is in it!😄
The music is great. The film is awful. The acting is laughable and the story is pedestrian. It seems like it was written and directed by an eighth grade girl.

It's pretty much one of the dumbest movies ever made. I'm NOT a Prince fan if you can't tell. LOL! I never understood the name change to a symbol???? ♤ ♧ ◇
From what I've heard the name change (or use of a symbol rather than any name) was due to him having a legal battle with WB over wanting to be relased from his orignal contract. He allegedly felt artistically and creatively suffocated. Since WB knew he used aliases to write music under, the contract included that he could not release any music under any other alias names either. However allegedly using a symbol was not included in the contract, so that was his way of using that as a loophole in the contract. Finally, again only from what I've heard, he was released from his original contract and went on to be more or less totally independant. It's also why his later materials might not have had the huge worldwide marketing machine behind it that WB used to put into his releases, still I guess he felt that was worth it to feel more free. After all he had his own studio complex, Paisley Park, to do whatever he wanted with.
