Prince Never Opened for Another Band Again

- In 1981 Prince was a rising star but still relatively unknown. When Mick Jagger invited him to open for the Rolling Stones, Prince thought it was his chance to break through to white rock audiences. No one had any idea how horribly things would go.

Who the fuck brings a grapefruit to a Stones concert?
The JD I can understand...
😂😂😂😂
Who brings a two day old bag of chicken parts. That’s the most outrageous thing I’ve ever heard of. Let’s get some chicken out the fridge leaking for two days and take it to a Rolling Stones concert
i was just thinking the same thing!
The grapefruit was likely part of someone's lunch that day. It was an all day event, and most people brought their own food to the show
I was at that first show. It was Prince, George Thorogood, The J. Geils Band and The Stones. I was already a Prince fan so I knew what to expect from him. He and the band were great, but yeah, they took a lot of crap from the crowd.
I was at the fist show too, one of my first concerts.
Me too. People were throwing stuff from the upper-level!! The promoter(W&R),had to come out two or three times after Prince left the stage, to ask the crowd to calm down.Didn't work.Nobody was havin it. We run him off. Only wanted the Stones. Epic, sunny day. Never saw so many people.
LA coliseum, Tattoo you your . Still on of my favorite albums!
I was there too. Good times.
A friend of mine was at that show and told me that Prince was singing something about "jerking it" when things really started flying.
I was at the Sunday show, Oct 11, 1981. The crowd immediately began throwing stuff as soon as Prince began. After they ran off stage an announcer threatened to cancel the rest of the concert and he was met with a barrage of trash too. Took a while to sweep the stage clean but J Geils Band and George Thorogood were excellent and the Stones were superb.
LOL Thorogood sucks. All sounds the same.
@@guitarista67 Yep, it all sounds b b b b b b b b b b bad
The Stones were a mixed bag. They gave artists of all sytles and background a chance, but they also thought it was a good idea to have drug and alcohol fueled bikers act as security in Altamont.
Oh, to be fair... the Grateful Dead and Garcia in particular had a relationship with the Angels. The Angels were supposed to look after stage security only - equipment and such - at Altamont. The story goes that the Angels were paid a few hundred dollars and all the beer they could drink. But... we know the rest of the story. Terrible. I saw an interview with Garcia where he sort of accepted Altamont as the Yang to Woodstock's Ying. Inevitable even.
I seen something years ago talking about how the hells angels had strong armed them into it. But that could very well be BS I assume as well.
Altamont was the Stones delegating security to the Grateful Dead
@@nathanielbemis2109the angels kept working with the hippies up into the 2000’s, I went to a festival where angels were security.
And like this, that bit of violence was clearly racially motivated.
Was at the first LA show and I remember a couple of members from the J Giles band came out on stage to reprimand the fans, and to explain to them what idiots they were, and how they’re missing out on something very special. A year later Prince became the biggest thing in music and the rest was history.
Prince was popular with one segment of listeners, not all segments.
I was at that concert.
Jagger's interests in other styles of music usually were ahead of those of a lot of rock fans - the fans sometimes took longer to catch up.

In grneral, you've just described how cultures, (in particular--American Culture) operates.
What eventually becomes widely known as new, edgy, cool, and cutting-edge never begins at the "center" (mainstream) of a given culture.
It begins at the margins; the borders; the peripheries of that culture. This includes music, fashion, language (slang)--and countless other things that are eventually embraced (co-opted?) by the surrounding culture.
I was there too. Think the announcer was Bill Graham.
More bizarre combos: The B52’s opened up for The Who, The Ramones opened for Toto, Sammy Hagar opened for Supertramp. 😮😄
I was at the first show. It was the saddest thing I'd ever seen.

@@user540000 Why is it so hard to believe that a 19 year old living in LA couldn’t be at that show? Why would I lie?

Probably closer to 20.
No he was an idiot. and I like prince way too much ego here man in the end that is what killed him.
THis wasn't the first time this happened at a Prince show during that era.
Prince went on to do great things. The people in the audience who were too ignorant and closed minded to enjoy his music went through live that way. What a waste of an existence.
I was there the first day right on the wall. It was a barrage of crap thats for sure. It was definitely not a crowd for the trench coat, G-string look. It was a legendary show, however. Thorogood kicked ass..
The first time I saw prince was on channel 29 in the late seventies. It was short blurb but his moves were there and the voice l knew he would be great.😮🖖🤓🦜😽✌️

Some music fans prefer their rock & roll as pure as the

And, incidentally?

The funniest part of this story is Prince saying he “just wanted to fight.” Come on. Seriously?
Hilarious..Prince got the last laugh
Who would have guessed that fans of a band that appropriated black music shamelessly would also hurl racist abuse at a black man...
Years ago I heard that,"...he flipped them off.,." and said "...f--- you..."
Have a massive amount of respect and love for Prince.
Nevertheless, you should know your audience. This isn’t any different than what we see today with dei being crammed into peoples faces. People will be repulsed and, revolt.
Makes me wonder to though if jAgger didn’t expect this, and was trying to create a contrast so people would be more elated when the Stones finally arrived on stage.
No. Jagger regularly invited unknowns or new acts of all kinds to open. The Stones liked to hear new stuff and sometimes " barrow" some .
Someone brought a bag of fried chicken to a rolling stones concert just in case the opening act was a black person he didnt like? Now THATS a well prepared racist.
Underwear and a trench coat? Well ….
Jagger skinny pants and lipstick?
I know a girl she’s my friend on Roblox She is actually princes daughter so I guess you could say she is a “Princess”
Never liked his music, don't own a single album & have never seen him live. Judging from videos I've seen of him playing the guitar, I wish I had. Arguably one of the greatest ever. This coming from a guy that doesn't like his music. He sure could play that guitar though.
actually he could play the piano the level Yanni plays the guitar as Santana/Hendrix , lyrics the type of Bob Dylan plus the funk base as JB's band could do. His organ was not the guitar but his piano as he was a real Musician with M capital
I was there. He had a jock strap and an overcoat as it seemed to me.He moved around a lot but the sound wasn't the best. I was far from the stage and he disappeared after a few songs. We came to see the Stones. The early bands got sort of the same treatment.

It a very bad idea to have Prince in a banana hammock opening for the Stones. You just know that is a terrible match for a Stones crowd. Maybe Queen or Elton John but not a band like the Stones.
The crowd should have smoked more pot and drank much less alcohol.
What did you expect... I like prince but bro
Never liked him, too much camp.
Girls liked him.
😵
Outshine the Stones....yeah 😂
I was there. It was not good.
Did prince have female dogs?
Wtf did Prince expect? When he's doing a weird act dressed in a thong, high heels and a falsetto, things are gonna get awkward fast, esp in front of a biker crowd. He was lucky he didn't get lunged.
I was there and I was ashamed of my fellow concert goers. He was great.
I was there, Prince was, to say the least, not appreciated. I didn't like his set either. It was a hot, miserable day and you were surrounded by 90,000 drunk, stoned assholes. You were there to hear Thorogood, Giles and The Stones. Avant garde, banana hammock funk was not going to be received well. BTW, Throrgood was excellent, The Stones were ok, J Geils was fantastic.
Prince got the last laugh. In 1985 Prince released a song called Pop Life. The song opens and closes with a recording of the crowd booing him from the Stones show that day! He became an WW icon & those people were on his song & didn’t get paid. 😆
A pretty sweet middle finger I’d say!

Mick was right about playing to shit audiences - especially in England.
Closed minded Rolling Stones fans?! Who would have thought.
Really? What bands fans were accepting of a guy wearing just women's underwear and a trenchcoat? Keep in mind mick jagger was their lead singer and he and David Bowie had their own let's just say relationship together. Majority of the stone fan were aware so not that closed minded. Just saying.
@jasonnelson6624 majority of the older stones fans to this day, in my experience don't believe the fact that Jagger and Bowie fucked.
@@gregh5061 guess it might be based on region? Cause on the west coast or bay area, at worst it was well we don't acknowledge that part. Or they still make great music. As for the stones fans that dont believe just show them she's so cold music video and ask them is he straight? 🤣 or an interview when they played not fade away, Brian Jones makes a comment about Mick being popular with the boys and not girls. Either way, I don't give a flying eff whichever of the two it is. @@skabuoy I never said it meant it was mutual. Also its always hear say even when the people there have talked about it correct? You have back up singers say they were present during basically orgies. You had Bowie's wife talk about walking in on them I could be wrong but I believe even Jerry Hall has discussed it. I remember someone saying they never questioned if Mick was gay or bi because it was common knowledge he would fuck anything. Personally I could careless who or what he did. I'm not even accusing him of doing anything. I can at least see there is more things that would say its way more likely that he didn't care male or female was ok with him. If you don't see it as a possibility or more than likely I guess the op was correct about their fans being closed minded.
Everybody... even Prince has to pay their dues. He didn't deserve the bullshit those fans did to him and the band, but I can imagine those 2 shows crystallized his drive and determination to be who he became to be. Great video and story!

Comment beyond hilarious
It was the tail end of the ‘70’s so the old ways still applied, I guess. It was the wrong audience for Prince. He would have been loved down on the strip in Hollywood. The Roxy was doing new wave back then.
This reminds me of seeing Toots and the Maytals open for the Who in Philadelphia in 1976. They went over like a fart in church. Many years later, Harrisburg, PA had a reggae show at a bandshell in a park and Toots was the headliner. He was absolutely amazing. I've never understood how people can compartmentalize their musical enjoyment such that they hate anything they've never heard. I never did see Prince, unfortunately.
Growing up Gen X, people would refuse to talk to you if you did not openly stick to their genre of music. Not everyone, but a lot of teens/young adults were very sheep like or tribal in this regard. Silly.
Nice to see Toots played the Stones back then too. I saw the Stones live thirty years later, and Toots opened there as well. Much to the dismay of the people around me. Not for me, I danced their entire set.
You've single-handedly just described the rock industry.
I kind of blame Bill Graham for this scenario, The Stones, J. Geils Band, George Thourogoid and the Destroyer’s then PRINCE? Sometimes having multiple genres works but this was a train wreck. Its would be like putting Metallica with Ariana Grande.
Or Hendrix & The Monkees?

I do however remember GNR being boo'd heavily because Axel starts ranting and raving some bs for like 15 minutes ruining their show and the crowd was booing him. Stones rocked.
I will admit I was never a big fan of Prince. I loved his guitar playing but the majority of his songs I thought sucked. My wife loves him. I would never throw anything at any band or anyone for that matter. I sat through my share of opening acts that I did not like but I was alway respectful. They all have more talent than I would ever hope to have. RIP
Name your favorite artist and I know prince songs are better! Don’t be afraid! 😮😊 I’ll wait!
In 1984 my wife and I saw Prince at the Cow Palace (S.F.) sitting in the "Purple Circle." We sat 5 rows from the front in a 20k seat arena! Sheila E. opened the show, dancing and singing and playing the drums in a silky see-thru bodysuit. At one point she was using drumsticks that changed colors whenever she hit them, coolest thing ever. Prince changed his Costume many times, I even remember him sliding down a pole at one point... My wife got me into Prince, even got me to go see "Purple Rain." She had written out the words to "Little Nicky" and when I found this piece of paper I thought SHE had written this poem, maybe she was nuts! I miss those Times...
This story reminds me of the time The Mars Volta opened for the Red hot chili peppers. Amazing band. The problem was that pepper fans were not into the weird psychadelic vibes. They played a 20 minute 3 song set. Objects thrown at them and booed relentlessly. It was like having Frank Zappa open for ACDC.
I once saw Atari Teenage Riot open for The Roots and Rage Against the Machine. Fan of the latter two bands were NOT happy with the lack of real instruments, and nearly booed ATR off the stage. I was pissed because I was a fan of all three bands, and hated seeing my home town be so rude.
I still listen to At the Drive In (formerly mars Volta) hell of a album. Can listen to the whole thing , nothing quite like it. If your fav band and their manager picks a band you don’t like, blame them, not the new band. Jackasses

The Stones have a couple of good songs, but mostly they make music for D-bags by D-bags. Their audiences today are pure yuppie elderly. They are notoriously ruthless with copyrights, and they are just kinda scummy. That he wanted to outdo the Stones at the beginning of his career was not that smart and a hopeless task, but apart from that, fans who were really familiar with the music and history of the Stones should have been open to someone like him. The haters probably had the macho bad boy, roots-oriented Richards in mind when they pictured the band. He also didn't appreciate Prince's music and attitude that much, but that has changed recently under the influence of his daughter, I read. I know that Jagger and Watts were interested in the latest dance and pop trends anyway. The androgyny that Prince was known for was also not foreign to the Stones, but in their case it was perhaps seen more as a game. Prince later proved more than enough what he was worth as an influential artist, on his own merits.
Same thing happened to Peter Tosh opening for the Stones on the Some Girls tour in 78. It wasn’t quite so violent, but I heard quite a few disparaging outbursts and saw at least a hundred people leave the Hampton Coliseum without even seeing the Stones

I remember this, my God the stuff they threw at him, he had to leave, the objects were getting bigger and more and more were being flung on stage.
Further proof that Prince was full of himself?
Actually, he sorta did. He was on tour with Rick James. I think Rick James was a bit more established at the time so Prince had to be the opening act. He ended up taking Rick James’ mojo right out from under him and took it to places I don’t think Rick could have as Rick’s music was kinda RnB “punk funk”. Prince had that same sorta feel but Prince had a bigger crossover appeal. That and the mixed race band made Prince stand out more I think. Then as we witnessed in the mid 80s, Prince bender genres-mixing hard rock, funk, RnB even some Rockabilly. Rock kept it closer to RnB.

It’s not always racial or political. Most of the time it’s just ill mannered , ignorant people exacerbated by the fact they’re in a crowd just like them. I’m not excusing it, but that’s how some people are and unfortunately the home and family unit have been destroyed so it’s going to get worse. Mick said he had the same experience also. Stevie Ray Vaughn was booed at Montreux early in his career.
