for those wondering why Alex turned evil between 1 and 2, there is a comic explaining it, divided into 3 tales: Mercer's tale, Survivors Tale, and Heller's Tale. in Mercer's Tale, he tried to find a reason to stay human, traveling around the world, taking out bad men but also seeing how bad people can be. he almost found a reason with a nice grandfather and his granddaughter in Alaska, even trying to protect them from a kingpin... but when he found out they were working with the kingpin and tortured a lot of people, he gave up and turned into the villain.
I thought Mercer died and the virus was just mimicking what Mercer was like, later the virus realized what was happening and Mercer became evil because the virus wanted a host that is better. Which heller became that new host.
Its tragic, mercer virus want to give a world without disease or suffering, but mercer virus essentially doing what normal virus would, "infecting" everyone and you basically undo everything in the first game, the good mercer virus believe it have humanity but it ultimately only doomed more people. To be honest i didn't know Colonel Rooks was a father what i heard him while he was talking on the phone and said something like "how's my little girl" i was like"Colonel Rooks has a daughter?" You know what? I don't know about y'all but I'm glad James let Rooks live because if he killed Rooks, his wife and daughter would be devastated
The tone of this game was amazing. Regardless of where you stand on the story, something about the military/zombie/superhero fusion just made you feel like such a badass. I’ve been waiting on prototype 3 since I was a kid... here’s to hoping 2021 🙏
The writing in the second game is so bad. There's quite a few ways they could have made the story work without Mercer doing a 180 and becoming a flat generic villain

I get why they changed the protagonist from Alex Mercer to heller because the more you think about it Alex Mercer did technically become a villain by the end of the first game but that’s just me
I wasn't mad at P2 for making Alex the villain or killing him off or changing his voice actor (which was cast perfectly for P1) or for any other reason. My only beef was, lack of character development. The whole Elizabeth Greene & Pariah angle (well built up) was completely dropped and we got a random angsty soldier as the protagonist who just randomly ended up with the Mercer virus and ended up killing him. Could be just me but it felt that P2 was rushed and the writers simply made up the story as they went along. P1 was original, new, refreshing but P2 was just a mash-up of every Hollywood stereotype for a typical action movie.

Not many characters can be both a good hero and a good villain, but Alex Mercer fits both roles. Very underrated character if you ask me. I'd love to see these games remastered.

These 2 games were amazing, stealing helicopter flying low in the city watching people turn and street by street the virus spread, panic in the street, people running chased by infected. Running up skyscrapers, flying, throwing tanks. these games were amazing and I miss them

He even absorbs people the same way as Alex. Alex changed Heller to be like him. The Mercer virus is an insatiable, unstoppable Force of nature. It's fucking awesome 😄
And the excuse the comics gave was complete shit. I don't care that Mercer was a villain(let's be honest, a guy who treats innocent civilians as health potions isn't exactly hero material), but the Real issue is that they made him a 1-dimensional, mustache-twirling cartoon. His plan/motives are garbage and he monologues like he just captured batman.
I know this is an unpopular opinion, but I personally prefer 2's story to 1's. I think the writing is fine, and the final boss, in my opinion, was definitely worth it due to the impact it leaves. (Also, I just think Mercer as a villain is cool) Also, I'd argue that calling Mercer a hero or anti-hero in the first game is pushing the envelop of that definition.
Alex Mercer was moved for the twisted goal of helping humanity to evolve James Heller was moved for his only goal. To protect his daughter. Emotions will always have a way to beat cold logic because thats what humanity is about. If we change that, we are no longer human.
I always was disappointed by Mercer’s motivations in this game. Something that would have been better could have been this: Instead of Mercer suddenly subscribing to a belief of “survival of the fittest” and randomly infecting Heller for no real reason, it could be revealed at Prototype 2’s end that the virus within Mercer became too powerful to control. See, with enough biomass stored within the infected host, the primary strain within Mercer reached the stage of its existence where it wanted to spread and reproduce within a new host. He MIGHT have believed that he could just discharge biomass in what he thought was an empty train station to better contain it within himself, but the resulting explosion was far more devastating than he’d predicted, and he unwittingly causes a second outbreak. Completely horrified from what he’d done, he suddenly breaks contact from everyone he loves and drives himself to the brink of insanity from his overwhelming guilt. That’s when he realizes that the only one who can stop him is someone LIKE him; and so he reluctantly takes charge of the Blacklight virus hordes, allowing them to spread but, in reality, also guiding them with the Evolved in such a way as to keep the virus from becoming too devastating. All the while, he is looking for a man worthy of getting infected with his primary strain, and comes across Heller, who already has an undying hatred of him. He infects Heller and continues tormenting him all throughout the game, becoming the absolute worst version of himself in order to show Heller exactly the kinds of horrors a being like himself can do with the primary strain when left unchecked. He makes Heller despise him because he wants to make ABSOLUTELY SURE that Heller never BECOMES him. To make sure that with his death, Weller doesn’t just wait and bottle up the virus in fear until it forces its way back out. After this revelation, Mercer finally tells Heller that if he consumes him, then the two primary strains will internally clash, one trying to consume the other resulting in both eventually nullifying themselves and becoming inert, bringing the Blacklight virus to an end once and for all. This would be the good ending. On the other hand, Heller could be changed for the worse by Mercer’s tormenting and can simply consume Mercer’s biomass for himself, bestowing unimaginable power into Heller and ensuring the Blacklight life cycle continues without end. In the end, you are the one who decides the future of the virus. You are the one who chooses to “kill your maker;” be it either to save the world, or to one day, eventually rule it.
2:17:55 This cutscene proved something for me, Heller is better than Mercer. Now before you go ahead and start hating on the replies because i disagreed with you, hear me out, i too used to love Mercer. I still do, just not more than Heller anymore. Mercer is cool, yes, but he is boring. He had no character especially in Prototype 1. Of course he had cool moments, but as in character, he was poor. He had no valid reason to kill thousands and infect a city but he still did. Sure you could argue that the reason why he released the virus was because Blackwatch were trying to remove every person that worked and knew about the virus, but he still did release it. Alex Mercer was selfish. He relased the virus at Penn Station because he was cornered and was about to die so he decided he will take others with him. The virus is also selfish. He killed thousands just to learn his past. And he infected the city once and planned on doing it twice with whitelight. Heller lost his daughter (or atleast he thought he did at the beginning) and his wife. Someone in the comment section said that he was stupid to go after mercer with a knife but thats the thing, he had nothing to lose. He went after him for a slight chance of murdering him. Now back to the cutscene i was talking about. Heller showed humanity in that cutscene. He decided not to kill Rooks because he heard that he had a daughter and he showed empathy, something that Mercer never made in both games. This was my personal opinion, and it was not an attack towards anyone.
Alex had the virus as insurance, so they just wouldn't kill him outright. But, Blackwatch didn't care, and was going to kill him anyway, so as already dying man he figured he'd throw down the vial. Turned out that saved him. At the end of Prototype, Alex regrets him initially releasing the virus both times, as well as all the people he killed. And, he goes out of his way to ensure NYC doesn't get nuked, even at the chance of him dying.
@@T4nkcommander mercer only destroyed the nuke to save himself, the virus as godlike as it is would not of been able to save him otherwise, it needs some sort of life form to recuperate itself, and a nuked city would of killed all lifeforms, thus killing mercer.

Why risk sacrificing himself to save the city when he could just go underground and survive the nuke? Clearly he wanted to help as he worked with Cross...you are ignoring all of the late game cutscenes.
Prototype and Prototype 2 aren't better or worse than the other. Just different. Can't a story be different with the complexity of this one? Remember, the virus isn't these two men. They're dead. Only the virus lives and does whatever it pleases.
Okay now that I am rewatching this I noticed something very interesting that no one has before. After heller escapes from Koenigs experiment in the beginning and when he meets mercer for second time then Mercer say 'I did not kill your wife and daughter'. Now how did Mercer know that ? Again when he leaves he says 'put some clothes on' and clothes magically appear on heller. Mercer might be controlling heller from the very moment he first did that thing to him. This is something no one noticed. This whole Mercer-Blacklight story is bigger then we thought.
I almost wish that Heller joined Mercer. Imagine what they'd do together. I'm not saying it would be good, but... It came to mind. What if he wasn't shown the footage that Mercer started the outbreak and had told him from the beginning that there were others like him. Heller doesn't strike me as a hero and even he said that he's no hero.
Played Prototype 1 a year ago and I still like Alex Mercer. Since I find out there's a Prototype 2, I went excited but after watching the trailer, I find out there's a new protagonist. Still, that doesn't change the fact that Alex is better whether it be a protagonist or the antagonist. I always thought he's still alive 'til now since the Mercer virus came from him, that means he still have the means to control it. Thanks for uploading this high quality game scenes. Alex Mercer will return.
Alex Mercer is a codename/nickname, if anything Mercer is a it and is nothing but a walking virus with many identities only thing is Alex Mercer as an identity was literally lazer printed onto its brain. But Mercer or Heller, both are good in their own terms, Mercer is doing what it can to survive and turn the entire virus around, whether its to start a new world, or kill it all at once. Heller understands the power but his humanity keeps him walking, if the Mercer virus had 2 sides, Mercer and Heller are the sides.
It's likely part of his plan for what'll happen in Prototype 3. I mean, come on: pieces of Mercer all over the place leaving room for him to return, and him being cool as a cucumber upon his "demise". He's known for his "lateral thinking", after all, and while he's not exactly evil, he's known for being the type to go to extremes to get his job done.

Nothing more than a shitty excuse to make Alex a villain because the new writer thought he was "too much of an asshole" and that a dark plot such as Prototype needed a fucking hero to save the day. Even then, Heller still failed to fulfill that role. No, Prototype 2 makes no fucking sense. The game and the comics are nothing more than a massive asspull, probably made to attract the younger audience. Mercer’s such a charismatic, badass protagonist of the entire Prototype series. Heller, on the other hand, he’s a sarcastic one, but I can’t say that he’s much powerful than Mercer.
Is there anyone here besides me that thinks that if they made a Live Action Prototype movie, it would be a MAJOR hit? I mean, we got CGI tech like crazy, we got some great actors still. I say they should put some real effort into it

Except that Alex Mercer has also consumed who knows how many Blackwatch troops, all of whom are supposedly top-tier trained specialists. I imagine the latent memories and experience of those kills has increased his melee skills to some degree.
Mercer might've consumed the black watch troops, But Heller surpass all of them in. He just needed a little push. plus Africans always had better genetics when it comes with survivability.

The whole Elizabeth Greene & Pariah angle (well built up) was completely dropped and we got a random angsty soldier as the protagonist who just randomly ended up with the Mercer virus and ended up killing him. Could be just me but it felt that P2 was rushed and the writers simply made up the story as they went along. P1 was original, new, refreshing but P2 was just a mash-up of every Hollywood stereotype for a typical action movie.

I know this is an unpopular opinion, but I personally prefer 2's story to 1's. I think the writing is fine, and the final boss, in my opinion, was definitely worth it due to the impact it leaves. (Also, I just think Mercer as a villain is cool) Also, I'd argue that calling Mercer a hero or anti-hero in the first game is pushing the envelop of that definition.

I always was disappointed by Mercer’s motivations in this game. Something that would have been better could have been this:
Instead of Mercer suddenly subscribing to a belief of “survival of the fittest” and randomly infecting Heller for no real reason, it could be revealed at Prototype 2’s end that the virus within Mercer became too powerful to control. See, with enough biomass stored within the infected host, the primary strain within Mercer reached the stage of its existence where it wanted to spread and reproduce within a new host. He MIGHT have believed that he could just discharge biomass in what he thought was an empty train station to better contain it within himself, but the resulting explosion was far more devastating than he’d predicted, and he unwittingly causes a second outbreak. Completely horrified from what he’d done, he suddenly breaks contact from everyone he loves and drives himself to the brink of insanity from his overwhelming guilt. That’s when he realizes that the only one who can stop him is someone LIKE him; and so he reluctantly takes charge of the Blacklight virus hordes, allowing them to spread but, in reality, also guiding them with the Evolved in such a way as to keep the virus from becoming too devastating. All the while, he is looking for a man worthy of getting infected with his primary strain, and comes across Heller, who already has an undying hatred of him. He infects Heller and continues tormenting him all throughout the game, becoming the absolute worst version of himself in order to show Heller exactly the kinds of horrors a being like himself can do with the primary strain when left unchecked. He makes Heller despise him because he wants to make ABSOLUTELY SURE that Heller never BECOMES him. To make sure that with his death, Weller doesn’t just wait and bottle up the virus in fear until it forces its way back out. After this revelation, Mercer finally tells Heller that if he consumes him, then the two primary strains will internally clash, one trying to consume the other resulting in both eventually nullifying themselves and becoming inert, bringing the Blacklight virus to an end once and for all. This would be the good ending. On the other hand, Heller could be changed for the worse by Mercer’s tormenting and can simply consume Mercer’s biomass for himself, bestowing unimaginable power into Heller and ensuring the Blacklight life cycle continues without end. In the end, you are the one who decides the future of the virus. You are the one who chooses to “kill your maker;” be it either to save the world, or to one day, eventually rule it.
Its been 9 years who's gonna wait for prototype 3 inplus who would wanna wait that long for a game that doesn't exist there is no 3rd one

This cutscene proved something for me, Heller is better than Mercer.
Now before you go ahead and start hating on the replies because i disagreed with you, hear me out, i too used to love Mercer. I still do, just not more than Heller anymore. Mercer is cool, yes, but he is boring. He had no character especially in Prototype 1. Of course he had cool moments, but as in character, he was poor. He had no valid reason to kill thousands and infect a city but he still did. Sure you could argue that the reason why he released the virus was because Blackwatch were trying to remove every person that worked and knew about the virus, but he still did release it. Alex Mercer was selfish. He relased the virus at Penn Station because he was cornered and was about to die so he decided he will take others with him. The virus is also selfish. He killed thousands just to learn his past. And he infected the city once and planned on doing it twice with whitelight.
Heller lost his daughter (or atleast he thought he did at the beginning) and his wife. Someone in the comment section said that he was stupid to go after mercer with a knife but thats the thing, he had nothing to lose. He went after him for a slight chance of murdering him. Now back to the cutscene i was talking about. Heller showed humanity in that cutscene. He decided not to kill Rooks because he heard that he had a daughter and he showed empathy, something that Mercer never made in both games.
This was my personal opinion, and it was not an attack towards anyone.
Alex had the virus as insurance, so they just wouldn't kill him outright. But, Blackwatch didn't care, and was going to kill him anyway, so as already dying man he figured he'd throw down the vial. Turned out that saved him.
At the end of Prototype, Alex regrets him initially releasing the virus both times, as well as all the people he killed. And, he goes out of his way to ensure NYC doesn't get nuked, even at the chance of him dying.
@@T4nkcommander mercer only destroyed the nuke to save himself, the virus as godlike as it is would not of been able to save him otherwise, it needs some sort of life form to recuperate itself, and a nuked city would of killed all lifeforms, thus killing mercer.
@@dveronica8591 except the ending makes no sense in that case, because he could have easily survived the city nuking given he survived it in the helo disposing of it.
Why risk sacrificing himself to save the city when he could just go underground and survive the nuke? Clearly he wanted to help as he worked with Cross...you are ignoring all of the late game cutscenes.
Prototype and Prototype 2 aren't better or worse than the other. Just different. Can't a story be different with the complexity of this one? Remember, the virus isn't these two men. They're dead. Only the virus lives and does whatever it pleases.

Okay now that I am rewatching this I noticed something very interesting that no one has before. After heller escapes from Koenigs experiment in the beginning and when he meets mercer for second time then Mercer say 'I did not kill your wife and daughter'. Now how did Mercer know that ? Again when he leaves he says 'put some clothes on' and clothes magically appear on heller. Mercer might be controlling heller from the very moment he first did that thing to him. This is something no one noticed. This whole Mercer-Blacklight story is bigger then we thought.

I almost wish that Heller joined Mercer. Imagine what they'd do together. I'm not saying it would be good, but... It came to mind. What if he wasn't shown the footage that Mercer started the outbreak and had told him from the beginning that there were others like him. Heller doesn't strike me as a hero and even he said that he's no hero.

Played Prototype 1 a year ago and I still like Alex Mercer. Since I find out there's a Prototype 2, I went excited but after watching the trailer, I find out there's a new protagonist.
Still, that doesn't change the fact that Alex is better whether it be a protagonist or the antagonist.
I always thought he's still alive 'til now since the Mercer virus came from him, that means he still have the means to control it.

Alex Mercer is a codename/nickname, if anything Mercer is a it and is nothing but a walking virus with many identities only thing is Alex Mercer as an identity was literally lazer printed onto its brain. But Mercer or Heller, both are good in their own terms, Mercer is doing what it can to survive and turn the entire virus around, whether its to start a new world, or kill it all at once. Heller understands the power but his humanity keeps him walking, if the Mercer virus had 2 sides, Mercer and Heller are the sides.
