There're two misunderstandings: first, 'getting licked' means being flattered in Chinese, so this post by the creator from the studio has nothing to do with sex. What it really means is basically He want to hire more people but too many people want to be hired so they flatter him too much and he can't get used to it. Second, the translation of the snake spirit is correct by IGN as '冲' does mean jerk off nowadays (though originally it does not, this is why GPT translate it the other way). But this pic has nothing to do with the studio as It's a post on a forum called Zhihu by some random guys.
That sentence does express the meaning of being flattered, but it does use a more vulgar metaphor (licking, erection), but for Feng Ji, "erection inability" in addition to being flattered, it also means that he feels the market's great expectation puts him under great pressure.

Dont overcomplicate things. Chinese has a nick of habit to shuffle on words. Go look at their local shops. Also it serves a purpose so that they can avoid duplicate trademarks (or sue the actual brand, like they did with Air Jordan)

As early as July 2021, someone asked the chief game graphic designer Yang Qi on Weibo what the LOGO meant. Yang Qi had already answered at that time that it meant lightning hitting an atom.
well, the official story I've heard is that lightning strikes atoms, and swimming tadpoles is more of a player-to-player rumor (although it does sound plausible)

Although the studio is new, the core members are not unknown. They were from Tencent's Quantum studio and were responsible for developing a discontinued MMORPG named Asura Online based on Journey to the West, the same as Wukong. You can still find Asura online's opening cinematic on TH-cam, which is made by the same company that makes the recent Wukong CG teaser, named Original Force, based in Nanjing, China.
The art director, Yang Qi, had also described the inspiration behind the company logo in a Weibo post or a comment reply years ago, as a bolt of energy striking an elementary particle, elevating it to a higher quantum state. The concept reflects the company name, Game Science.
So basicaly they made a game that was never released. Im much more hyped now

It's their passion and vision, and after years of collecting cash from mobile game market they finally pulled enough resource to try again. It's one of the reasons why they're receiving so much support.

Nevertheless, single-player games were not profitable in China at that time, so in order to gain Tencent's approval, they had to transform it into an online game. The public test version included plenty of elaborate music, voice-overs, and NPC backgrounds. However, when making an MMO, it is essential to pump out content as fast and regularly as possible for players to consume. After 1.0, they were unable to meet the deadlines while maintaining the initial quality standards, leading to a lack of financial success. Eventually, future updates were scrapped by Tencent. The core members departed and establish Game Science in 2014. By developing successful mobile games, they were able to generate funds to bring Black Myth to life, with the 2020 trailer dedicated to talent recruitment. The Wukong game is truly their passion project.

I remember watching the reveal about half a decade ago and I was certain it was fake. Then more and more footage just kept coming out now I can't believe we are almost at release
@@huricanethreeonesix I remember when a teaser was released for this game and the only reason why I believed it was legit was because Maximilian Dood noticed that when Wukong was fighting all those soldiers the FPS dropped. Games don't usually show FPS drops, especially fake ones, so when that happened people started believing that the game is real.

I felt the same until I realized that they showed very specific gameplay, short clips, not too long for us to grasp how the game actually is. Hope it’s good but so far it seems like it’s only road’s leading to bosses and repeat.

I picked up a copy of Monkey Folk Tale of China which is a very streamlined version of Journey to the West with only certain chapters but it’s still awesome

I appreciate you doing your own research on that ign article and not just taking it at face value. Especially when it comes to translating. American's think every word they translate is literal just like the english language when in reality foreign languages are waaaaaay more complex with their words and can be translated many different ways.
It's especially perilous to translate between a glyph based language to a character based language. These Chinese glyphs each represents whole words and even phrases, unlike character based languages such as English where words are made up by individual distinct letters.
Allow me to give you an example.
In Chinese, "Zhe shi she me?" when translated literally into English, would be "This is what?"
Yes, when literally translated, the phrase is in broken sounding English, whereas the grammatically correct translation would be "What is this?"
This makes it incredibly easy to either unintentionally or maliciously mistranslate and misinterpret the Chinese language, for a wide variety of reasons.
All languages have these issues when translating. Even English.
As a Chinese player, I want to clarify some parts of the video.
Firstly, regarding the company name and logo: The company is called Game Science. While the logo might appear misleading and resemble a sperm, the company explained in a 2021 interview with Chinese media that the logo represents an atom being struck by lightning. It's that simple. The comment suggesting that the Chinese abbreviation for "Game Science" ("游科" yóu kē) sounds like "游蝌" (yóu kē), meaning "swimming tadpole," is just a playful term used by players. It's not an official name given by the company.
Secondly, about the signboard advertising: There's no denying that the Chinese player Luke quotes in the video is correct. Their recruitment advertisements are indeed vulgar, but that doesn't mean they are sexist.
Next, they accused the game art director, Yang Qi, of calling for no female players. This is completely taken out of context.
When quoting his statement, you must consider the development context of the Chinese game industry. At that time, and even now, many character designs in Chinese games aesthetically pursued "白幼瘦" mindlessly（"白幼瘦" means having white skin, a youthful appearance, and a slender body.）. This applies not only to female characters but also to male characters in many game companies. It's absurd, right? Imagine if Kratos were a slender, fair-skinned man. Imagine if Arthur Morgan looked like an idol. It doesn't fit their story backgrounds at all, does it?
This is precisely what the game art director was trying to convey. We shouldn't pursue this kind of aesthetic because it makes men not look like men. We need to create something that truly embodies masculinity. Do you think that's sexist? At least, I don't think so.

This game has probably the most beautiful postprocessing in any game to date. The particle effects, motion blur, DoF... not to mention the animation fluidity, lumen, nanite, VSMs,.. it's a feast for the eyes. Truly amazing use of UE5's features. 😲 It's so dense with detail that anyone on TH-cam who doesn't know how to properly record and process videos to minimize compression artifacts is doing this game a disservice.

The negative article is probably from that guy who tweeted about Baldurs Gate 3, saying it shouldn’t be the standard for games or whatever.
Worst case scenario the game studio was having a bit of cheecky fun and decided to make the logo look like sperm. Best case scenario when designing the logo the deves accidentally miss drew a lighting bolt or a projectile . Either way WHO THE HELL CARES. This game speaks for it self and Game Science should be very proud of the work they have produced. Also, if you are really getting butt hurt over a logo then I feel bad for you because I cant imagine how you are reacting to other things in the world that are FAR WORSE then this.

Well, just look at Hogwarts Legacy and Stellar Blade. Both game studios had only made mobile games previously, and when they attempted to make AAA console games, they absolutely blew it out of the park, and there wasn't a single microtransaction in sight for either game. So let's hope that it's the same case for this studio with this promising looking game that I for one am absolutely looking forward to playing and can't wait to get my hands on!

Shift Up, the developers of Stellar Blade, are also a mobile games company who made their console debut and that was a success, which makes me hopeful that this will be a similar situation if not better
The Korean Round8 and Neowiz were also mobile game devs but Lies of P was just an incredible first effort. Serviceable lore, polished gameplay, good level design and even the voice acting and the OST were pretty amazing IMO. Oh and it runs amazing. My FPS usually hovered around 150-170 FPS at 1440p with an RX 6900 XT. Which is crazy when Steel Rising could barely hit 80 on my system.
Dude, Stellar Blade was an amazing game! Best game I've played this year by far. I hope we see more solid games from this part of the industry.
Stellar blade is alright, but I don't like shift up as an organisation due to their extreme unethical working enviroments, my gf worked there as administrator and she told me women over there are absolutely exploited and patronised.
So when that stellar blade controversy came along I knew it had many slivers of truth.

What a lot will not know, is how draped in chinese fantasy this game is. The monkey king i first came across in the 70's with the tv series monkey magic, and capcoms 'sonson' in the arcade from 1984. This is deep into chinese fantasy lore as you will ever get.

Dragon Ball was my first introduction to journey to the west... Hearing what it was based off got me interested, Now there is a video game adaptation of that same folk lore that Akira Toriyama (R.I.P) used for inspiration. Im invested and it looks good.

The IGN article apparently came after the studio rejected Sweet Baby Inc, Hit Detection, Baby Ghost and affiliates attempts at trying to get them to hire them as DEI consultants. But I'm not 100% sure if that is a fact, or if someone misreported it.

1. According to the information currently available, overall, this is a linear game (a linear story). Of course, between boss battles, there will be many RPG elements, such as items, equipment, upgrades, skill tree, side quests, mini bosses, hidden rewards, etc. It is likely that the game is level-based, each level will have branching paths and secrets to explore. There are regular enemies, and they will respawn like in Soulslike games, but compared to bosses, they are less difficult. Challenging Boss fights are the focus of the game. The graphics are super realistic, but there is no in game map, you can easily get lost, just like in a real jungle. Some players may consider this a bad design. Because if you ignore or miss those cultivation and exploration mechanisms, you may miss some important skills/weapons or some necessary growth, and the boss battle will become even more difficult. Or maybe others like it, we can't draw a conclusion yet.
2. On the surface, IGN's translation is not without basis, if you insist on interpreting it that way. However, many people have explained -> What the developer said is actually some common Chinese Internet slang that everyone uses. Some of the words may have some sexual connotations in real life slang at the beginning, but gradually they have become regular expressions on the Internet, and do not contain any special discriminatory meanings. Chinese language is very context-dependent. In real life, you can't just take the words literally. Well, I guess this is true for any language, especially in informal situations, such as on social media. The developer said a lot of things in his post ten years ago, and he was indeed criticizing some things, such as the gaming environment in China at that time. But in the IGN article, they only picked one sentence, distorted its meaning without considering the context, and drew a conclusion they wanted. I don't know why they are so shameless. Maybe because they're just plain stupid, maybe because they didn't get any $$$ from Game Science, or maybe they just hate China/Chinese. Sadly, we are living in a weird world.
I'm currently playing Wo Long because I'm new to Souls games. I'm enjoying it a lot, mainly because I love the Romance of the 3 kingdoms stories. Almost as much as I love Journey to the West and Wukong. I'm looking forward to playing this game!

Gamescience’s logo looks like a swimming tadpole. Gamescience’s Chinese name is 游戏科学 and the Chinese usually shortened it as 游科。游科 sounds similar to 游蝌(swimming tadpole). That’s where their logo comes from, I think (read it from somewhere).

If IGN tells you not to buy a game, then it's more than likely good. If they tell you to buy a game, then research is needed to see why as they always have ulterior motives. They are not good games journalists.

This one won't have super complicated level design. The devs literally said they don't want to make the levels a maze, with a lot of doors that won't open from this side, because they don't want to ruin the JOURNEY to the West. I think they are aiming for a story-driven linear level design like God of War.
So lower your expectation on that one

IGN article is an example of modern (gaming) journalism. No facts, clickbait title, full of emotions and opinions to cause certain behaviour of readers instead of presenting the information as it is and let the people to build the opinion based on the data they gained.
Personally, I'm excited about Wu Kong and curious what the final game will be like. Hope it will have similar levels to Sekiro or Dark Souls series.
Last time a game came from "a relatively unknown Studio" known more for "mobile gaming", we got Stellar Blade which is BY FAR 2024's Game of the Year. A game that came out complete, with barely to no bugs, beautiful graphics and even better character designs, and no micro-transaction whatsoever.
So I'm WAY more inclined to give the devs of Black Myth Wukong a chance, than I am to give any more chances to anything out of garbage "AAA" Studios like Ubisloth or Woketivision Blizzard.
I for one am NOT down for it to be just loading into boss fights, because I don’t really like the souls-like allure where the draw is just how crazy and difficult the boss fights are, I’m hoping there’s more meat around the bone in terms of narrative and exploration.
I agree. Personally I think there is, but they're not showing it so despite all they've revealed, there's still surprises and things no one has seen. Hopefully.

I read articles from Chinese gaming journalism that this game seems to go all-out on the bosses, this game has more than 100 uniquely designed and fun boss encounters. But very little side activities to do between the boss fights.
Disappointing but understandable as there's a decent market for that style. Probably pass on it personally, souls likes are not my thing. Hope it turns out great for those that are though.

I think Xbox series s was a mistake because it is holding back developers and the Xbox series x. If this game is good, we need the Xbox boiys to support it too at launch to show devs these are the type games we like.

So about the content between boss fights, there is more info in Chinese community. Those who got invited to play said that the maps are separate by storyline, and each chapter may have slightly different map designs, some is more linear and some is more open world.
For the latest 2-hour demo, they say the map is like 3 big areas, each has several branches, and on each branch route there maybe some elite monsters, or quests, collecting job, these kind of stuff, and you can get things like armors, new transformation, new magic acctaks, making the map final boss relatively easier. Or you can just ignore the branches and rush to the final boss

There are some outlets that have done 4k captures that look good, VGC comes to mind. But IGN’s captures are almost always really poor quality. Idk why…

Between boss fights you do base building, collect resources and try tame many dinosaurus which help you fighting with bosses.
I think the biggest concern would really be performance, because nowhere in their required specs did they say what framerate they were targeting and they did state that those tests were done with dlss and upscaling
So we don't really know what exactly they're targeting, and obviously gameplay demos are not going to show a full picture of that aspect especially since they all have really high-end machines for those
But I am very excited
China's internal demo uses PS5, and it is confirmed that it can run smoothly at 60FPS

It's like when that train with toxic chemicals derailed in Ohio a few years back, people suddenly started to see more articles about train derailings. A lot of people were convinced it was connected, but train derailings were just more common and now articles about them were getting more clicks.

I have seen many gamers review Black Myth: Wukong, and they all talk about the boss fight in the game. However, I need to explain that the script of Black Myth: Wukong is also very profound, because it is based on the script of "Journey to the West", one of Four Great Classical Novels, and it is full of various Chinese elements. Also, you need to understand that the script of Black Myth: Wukong has set off a big wave in China, and many people are guessing what the ending of this script will be. So, I think the biggest difference between Black Myth: Wukong and previous soul games is that it has a very good script, and it is not just for the pleasure of fighting the boss.
I'm definitely worried about the connective tissue as well. It's strange they haven't shown any of it. I'm worried they've spent all these years designing and tinkering with the boss fights and the feel of the game while not putting effort into the world and what we do in it. There's no way the game is all boss fights.

Whoever wrote that article at IGN was either incredibly desperate or had a serious grudge. Either way, their post was not professional, and they deserve to be punished for it.
We don't know if the game Black Myth: Wukong itself has any political correctness issues, nor are we sure if the creators are sexist. However, they believe the producers discriminate, so they are convinced that all their works must be bad. Why can Chinese people accept this "sexism"? Because they believe Chinese women have a low status. Especially in the final paragraphs, I feel they write such articles just to smear China, not just to criticize Game Science. This is a form of political persecution based on shooting first and then drawing the target.

The main reason is likely that China (as far as I know) hasn’t been a successful AAA game exporter in the West, as it stand it’s mostly dominated by the US-Europe-Japan. There’s a general anxiety around China’s increasing ability to manufacture luxury goods and world-leading entertainment, and having them be exported to the West, which would result in a shrunken and more competitive market, along with possible ideological contamination. I think the hate mainly emanates from underlying geopolitical/geoeconomic factors; mainstream game media is protecting its domestic market from competitors who operate in a different economic block.

The biggest things that will make or break the game IMO is performance, how you progress the world/how its laid out and the exploration depth(because games like this need those little surprises and areas to find that have nothing to do with the main progression)

Chinese is quite complex if the words are written by someone who has 'literature' or 'higher' Chinese words. Some words are shorten or some are like replacement metaphoric words. Some words are slangs and some are historical terms in ancient times.
It is super hard to translate directly... there isn't enough english words to capture this.. Greek, Hebrew would have more words than the english words to explain what a feeling/situation is as well.
But yeah, his words are very vulgar... because he does seem to imply if he does cover the bottom...
Either:
a) It is workable
